The Point Men / Bargaining 교섭 [Movie Jan 18, 2023]

It may not be a bad thing that the movie is not ready to be released now. With the current covid-19 situation, it would be difficult to launch the movie in theatres and have the customary stage greetings. The press conferences would be downscaled and actors masked.

Yes, a release on Netflix may be convenient for us viewers. But it's not ideal. I would like to see the usual fanfare that comes with a release in the cinemas. They deserve it too after the hard work.

What kind of breakthrough do you want to have this year?

"The Point Men" is in post production. Although it's something I can't decide on my own, it would be nice to give greetings at the movie theatre through corona. I really want to do that. [tanslated by @doolyfeels]

South Korea’s Megabox Plus M has sold The Point Men, director Yim Soon-rye’s anticipated Korean hostage crisis drama, to 14 territories including Japan (Gaga) and Taiwan (MovieCloud).

The latest feature from Yim, who directed 2014 local hit Whistle Blower, stars Hwang Jung-min (The Spy Gone North) and Hyun Bin (Late Autumn) in the true story of a Korean diplomat who is dispatched to Afghanistan when a group of South Korean tourists is taken hostage by the Taliban. When all other measures fail and one hostage is killed, he is forced to team up with a special agent (Hyun) to try and rescue the survivors.

The film, which is in post-production, has also sold to Hong Kong and Macau (Edko Films), Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Vietnam (Encore Films), Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar (Sahamongkol Film), Philippines (Viva Networks), and Mongolia (The Filmbridge).

Investor-distributor Megabox Plus M, which launched its international sales arm in October, is lining up The Point Men as a 2021 tentpole release in Korea.

The company says it has also been fielding inquiries from Chinese buyers following encouraging recent signals that a thaw in China’s unofficial freeze on Korean cultural products could be coming soon.

Note: This writeup applies mainly to hollywood movies.

What is a TENTPOLE movie?

The tentpole movie is as close to a sure fire hit that can reasonably be predicted by various parameters such as similar films, talent, release date, theme and audience.

Tentpole is a studio term that relates to risk allocation. Studios try to spread their financial risk across their entire slate since roughly one in ten films actually returns a profit. The designated tentpole movie is designed to carry less financial risk than the rest of the film slate to return an overall profit to the studio.

Given that successful tentpole films must generate around $1 billion in global box office receipts off production and P&A budgets of $200 to $300 million, they must be exhibited in theaters all year long (wide theatrical window), they must appeal to a four quadrant audience (men, women, boys and girls) and contain universal and culturally relevant themes.

North America only represents around 20% of the global marketplace. Studios therefore rely on foreign box office to generate up to 80% of their revenues.  The international box office doesn’t refer to the established Western European and English speaking markets, but emerging markets as well.

The key emerging markets include China, Russia, India, Far East, Brazil and the Middle East.

WHAT MOVIES MAKE THE BEST TENTPOLES?

High concept films are typically the biggest box office earners. They are also the easiest to distribute.

Action is the best genre that is the best predictor of box office success. Comedy can be topical and may may not travel well. despite its broadness. Most countries produce their own home grown dramas so aren’t looking to purchase too many from the USA.

Action is the only genre that drives the billion dollar box office. These movies are big in every respect. Big concepts, big visuals. big sets and big sound. They are also the most expensive pictures to produce.

Studios rely on pre-awareness to market these big action movies internationally. Pre-awareness is also a key factor in predicting box office performance. This drives the studios’ desire to produce sequels.

The stakes in action films have to be a matter of life or death for the main characters, or humanity itself. They represent escape and entertainment in their purest form. They must be familiar, confident and socially relevant.

Tentpole movies tend to be released in the summer in many key markets. This is generally from May through August/September. The better tentpoles are released earlier in the summer season to kick off the box office. Other than season, distributors aim to release films during major holidays in international markets, such as Christmas and New Years Day.

Tentpole films are increasingly relying on simultaneous worldwide release to combat piracy and bad word of mouth.

Casting is becoming an increasingly important consideration in tentpole movies. The stars must be able to open a film internationally.

Even with all the variables accounted for to minimize risk,, some tentpoles have failed to ignite the box office. Perhaps this is a function of the release schedule becoming too crowded, the content too familiar and the storytelling too bland to appeal to the widest audience.

Ooooh, will there be movie-related merchanise like t-shirts etc? I want! 😍😍😍 Does it also mean the movie will likely be released this summer?

*****

In the film industry, tent-poles are sometimes widely released initial offerings in a string of releases and are expected by studios to turn a profit in a short period of time. Such programming is often accompanied by larger budgets and heavy promotion. A tentpole movie, for example, is a film that is expected to support a wide range of ancillary tie-in products such as toys and games.

In other words, if you hope to stir interest in the aforementioned things, market it in a way that is relevant to something that is generating a lot of buzz, such as selling face masks and t-shirts around election time, releasing a family-oriented movie on a festival, or conducting a CSR activity around Independence day. These are all instances where marketers took benefit of the “trend” to efficiently market their cause.

The digital world is largely led by trending topics, pictures, and videos on different platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, which are primarily popularised by hashtags. Many brands then join the bandwagon if they find it relevant to trending hashtags to promote their products and services. In the past, we have observed how popular acts such as the Kiki challenge and Ice Bucket challenge created on social media platforms gained instant traction due to its creative, engaging and interesting nature.

Source

Business practices ebb and flow in Hollywood, but with rare exception each of the major movie studios consistently subscribes to the importance of “tentpole” movies. What are they? Big, brash, expensive movies around which a studio can build their release schedule. Typically slotted in the two big box office season — November through December (holidays) and May through July (summer) — tentpole movies are often based upon pre-existing literary material (e.g., Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Iron Man, Spiderman) or pre-existing original movies (e.g., Star Wars, Indiana Jones). The reason they’re called “tentpole” movies is that their primary function is to hold up (do well) at the box office, typically raking a lot of money in a short time, and by doing so balance out the rest of a studio’s slate of movie releases.

In 2020, the footsteps to the theater were cut off due to the corona. In order to appease the regret, a large number of stars who have wanted to see the screen come to the screen.

You can also see Hyun Bin. Hyunbin meets the audience through the movie 'Bargaining' about 3 years after the movie 'Rampant', which was released in 2018. 'Bargaining', in which director Lim Soon-rye grabs a megaphone, is a work about the rescue of the abductees based on the abduction case of Koreans in the Middle East, starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun-bin. 'Bargaining' was originally scheduled to be filmed in Jordan in March last year, but the filming was postponed due to the corona, and after shooting in Korea, he left for Jordan in July to complete the filming. After filming, the 'Bargaining' team arrived in Korea in September last year, and is scheduled to be released this year after post-production of the film. On January 1, 2021, Hyun Bin acknowledged the fact of dating Son Ye-jin and began this year with more public attention than ever before. We are looking forward to seeing what Hyunbin, who makes a comeback on the screen in 3 years, will show.

Pre-sale of the movie "Bargaining" in Japan...Binsama Power!

Expectations to ignite the new screen Korean Wave

Top star Hyun Bin is targeting the Japanese market again.

Hyun Bin, who reignited the Korean Wave in Japan last year with his lead drama "Crash Landing On You," will meet local audiences with a new film this time. He clearly proves his name and plays a role as a new force in Korean films targeting overseas stages amid the global pandemic of infectious diseases.

The movie "Bargaining," starring Hyun Bin and Hwang Jung-min, was recently pre-sold in Japan. It is part of pre-sale of distribution rights to 14 Asian countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. However, Japan gives special meaning to Hyun Bin. This is because the lead drama "Crash Landing On You," which was released in Japan through Netflix in February last year, has gained huge popularity, ranking first in the content that has been viewed the most every year. In other regions such as Hong Kong and Singapore, 'Crash Landing On You' has consistently remained at the top of the list, including the number one content that has been seen a lot.

The pre-sale of the "negotiation" in Japan seems to have relied on such strength. Shin Beom-soo, CEO of Watermelon, a film company that produces "Bargaining," said on the 3rd, "The drama "Crash Landing On You" has caused such a hot sensation in Japan and other Asian countries," adding, "The pre-sale of distribution rights is also not much different even if it is in the extension." "We can't reveal the exact amount of sales, but we received an amount that matches the actor's reputation and the size of the movie," Shin said.

It is also noteworthy that Korean films have come to power again at a time when the number of moviegoers in Japan has decreased significantly amid the global craze for new coronavirus infections (Corona 19). Except for "Parasite" last year, Korean films have not been noticeable in recent years, so the film industry seems to expect a new screen Hallyu to ignite, starting with "Bargaining" with Hallyu star Hyun Bin at the forefront.

The weight of Hyun Bin is known to have drawn attention from the Chinese side amid regulations on the law. CEO Shin Beom-soo said, "I understand that there are favorable views from Chinese buyers about the movie and Hyun Bin." Analysts say that although "Crash Landing On You" has not been officially aired there, interest in the drama, including in Asia, may have led to the local area.

"Bargaining" is directed by Im Soon-rye, who joined hands with Hyun Bin and Hwang Jung-min. It tells the story of a diplomat and an NIS agent who went out to rescue a South Korean hostage kidnapped in the Middle East. It is currently in the second half of the work and is scheduled to be released this year.

The story is based on a true story of a South Korean hostage incident in Afghanistan.

A group of South Korean tourists are held hostage by extremist Taliban groups in Afghanistan, and the South Korean government will send Jae-ho (Hwang Jung-min), known as Korea's top diplomat, to deal with the situation. Jae-ho arrives in Afghanistan, asking for cooperation from the Afghan government and using every possible means to free the hostages. However, Jae-ho's efforts go down the drain. Due to his failure, he works with special agent Daesik (Hyun Bin), a Middle East expert, and as they begin to move to approach the Taliban, the first hostage incident occurs. In a desperate situation where there is nowhere to turn, the two men, who were hostile to each other, agreed to cooperate to save the rest of the hostages.

The 74th Cannes International Film Festival will announce this year's guest film of the year on May 27. Which Korean movie is expected to go to Cannes?

The U.S. Screen Daily on Tuesday pointed to films from each country that are likely to be invited to this year's Cannes Film Festival. Korean films also introduced expected guest films.

Screen Daily first picked director Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Break Up" as its guest candidate. As it is a new film directed by world-renowned director Park Chan-wook, Cannes is already showing interest. However, he added that since "Decision to Break Up" finished filming last month, time could be triggered to finish the movie until the entry.

It also introduced that "emergency declaration," in which "Parasite" Song Kang-ho and Lee Byung-hun and Jeon Do-yeon worked together, "The hostage" starring Hwang Jung-min, "The Negotiation" by Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin, and "Modishu" directed by Ryu Seung-wan are most likely to be invited. Among them were "Remember," starring Lee Sung-min, "The Blood of the Landscape" by Cho Jin-woong and Choi Woo-sik, and the movie "The Scene."

Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Festival did not hold an offline film festival last year due to the Corona 19. This year, it is scheduled to open on July 6 after announcing the invitational film on May 27.

South Korean films "Emergency Declaration," directed by Han Jae-rim, and "In Front of Your Face" by Hong Sang-soo were invited to this year's Cannes Film Festival.

In the official selection for the 74th Cannes Film Festival announced on Thursday, "Emergency Declaration" was listed in the Out of Competition category along with five other films, including "The Velvet Underground" by Todd Haynes, "Stillwater" by Tom McCarthy and "De Son Vivant" by Emmanuelle Bercot.

Celebrated South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo's "In Front of Your Face" was named in the Cannes Premieres section.

The announcement marked the first time in five years in which a Korean film failed to make an entry to Cannes' main competition, excluding last year when the festival was canceled.

Since Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" in 2016, Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" (2017), Hong's "The Day After" (2017), Lee Chang-dong's "Burning" and Bong's "Parasite" (2019) were selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. "Parasite" won the top prize at that year.

The Cannes festival, one of the most prestigious film fests in the world, will take place on July 6-17, with American filmmaker Spike Lee named jury president.

This year, 24 films including the opener "Annette" by Leos Carax, "Red Rocket" by Sean Baker, "The French Dispatch" by Wes Anderson and "Drive My Car" by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, will contend for Palme d'Or.

While its 2020 edition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cannes' organizers announced the list of its selections of 56 movies without prize winners. Two Korean movies -- Yeon Sang-ho's "Peninsula" and Im Sang-soo's "Heaven: To The Land of Happiness" -- were included. (Yonhap)

HWANG JUNGMIN

Extremely Exquisite & Incredibly Vigorous!

Korean Actors 200 by KoBiz.

The Korean Actors 200 KOFIC campaign ‘The Actor is Present’ sees the selection of 100 men and 100 women who represent the present and the future of Korean film.

The whole masculinity that is hot, intense, humorous, and reliable! The actor has never lost in the box office hit.

His name says it all. Hwang Jungmin is the key actor of Chungmuro, the symbolic center of Korean cinema. He, who has proven his amazing acting chops. When the camera turns on, the actor empties himself to become a character he plays. Hwang debuted with the musical Line 1 (1994) and started to make his presence felt after starring in the film Waikiki Brothers (2001). At the time, director Yim Soonrye said, ‘Hwang Jungmin is like a rough gemstone before being cut into a gem,’ which turned out to be like a prophecy of Hwang’s acting life. It is said that actors wear different clothes depending on their characters, but Hwang is full of raw energy that is hard to see through. He showed innocent-faced drummer Kangsoo in Waikiki Brothers, then he turned into a hypocritical and shameless lawyer in A Good Lawyer’s Wife (2003). In A Bittersweet Life (2005), he became vicious, gruesome Boss Baek, sending shivers down people’s spines.

Hwang Jungmin, who can best play villain characters in South Korea, is also more than capable of playing a romantic character. It is rather rare among Chungmuro’s top character actors to show their talents in melodramas as well. The first work that confirmed his talent in melodrama was You’re My Sunshine (2005), in which he starred opposite Jeon Doyeon. What otherwise can be considered predictable moments or cringeworthy lines become genuine and real thanks to Hwang’s brilliant acting. It was no wonder that the Blue Dragon Award and the Korean Film Awards of the year gave him the Best Actor Award.

Hwang Jungmin is a reliable actor for sponsor companies as he has a combination of personal charms, acting chops, and ticket power. The audience often assumes that even a dark-themed film is worth watching if Hwang appears in it. Despite the devastation of the movie industry due to COVID-19, DELIVER US FROM EVIL, in which Hwang starred, ranked second at the box office in 2020. In short, Hwang Jung-min is ‘trust.’ With Ode to My Father (2014) and Veteran (2015), the actor attracted 10 million viewers respectively. Among the leading actors of these films, Hwang reached a cumulative audience of 100 million following Song Kangho. His presence is well felt even in the movies where he played minor roles, such as The Wailing (2016) and Asura: The City of Madness (2016), which proves the saying “An actor proves his value not with the importance of a role, but with the impression of a character. The actor’s next films include Director Yim Soonrye’s new film The Point Men and the crime thriller Hostage: Missing Celebrity. Hwang Jungmin still has a lot to show. Jung Siwoo

HYUN BIN

Extremely Exquisite and Incredibly Vigorous, The Actor is Present.

Korean Actors 200 by KoBiz.

From a romanticist in TV series to an action hero is the film industry. Hyun Bin's reputation, which always makes the public excited, shows no sign of slowing down.

A star is a coordinate of the desire and daydream of the time, reflecting the trend and era with constantly changing power. The cycle is getting faster. In other words, it is not easy to stay as a steady seller for a long time under the current star system, where a star is quickly replaced. Hyun Bin is a rare actor in this regard. The actor has already experienced three heydays in his career, unlike many other actors who would be lucky to have it just once. What’s more, he did that even in the changing times.

The actor’s first heyday came early. After debuting with the weekend series Bodyguard (2003), Hyun was recognized for his potential as an actor in Ireland (2004) and rose to stardom with My Lovely Sam-Soon (2005) when he was only 24. Five years later, he drew huge attention again by playing Kim Joowon in Secret Garden (2010), who hides his traumas and warmth in his bluffness. Also, in Crash Landing on You (2020), Hyun showed a model of a reliable man and hit his third home run. After the series was released on Netflix, Hyun has risen again as the main character of the K-wave. But the reason the actor is highly valued as a star is not simply because he became a sensation three times. It is because he is steadily showing his unique identity as an actor while showcasing his star quality.

The low-budget film I Am Happy (2009) that the actor played a megalomaniac, and the art film Come Rain, Come Shine (2011) that he played free of charge reflected Hyun Bin’s faith, that he doesn’t want to be consumed as a good-looking nine-day wonder. Late Autumn (2011), where the actor performed with Tang Wei, is a good example that shows Hyun’s passion for acting. What about Hyun Bin in the series Worlds Within (2008), which is still being talked about? He stirred up great empathy from us with the vivid image of a very ordinary young man.

There are many stars in the film world, and many of them can be called professional actors. However, not many of them have both. In that sense, Hyun Bin is a rare and unusual actor. It has not been changed, and that’s why Hyun Bin is unique. Countless actors are pouring into the film world every year, but no one seems to replace the vibe Hyun Bin has. Who can be the second Hyun Bin anyway? After filming The Point MEN with Hwang Jungmin recently, Hyun Bin is filming Confidential Assignment 2 now. Recording 7.8 million viewers, Confidential Assignment 1 (2016) gave him great success. Hyun Bin is a living drama himself who has made independent choices and constantly expanded his spectrum. Jung Siwoo
