Im Cheol-ryung (Hyun Bin) is an officer of a special investigation team in North Korea. His team goes to a disturbance at a warehouse that prints counterfeit money. Im Cheol-ryung's superior Cha Ki-seong (Kim Joo-hyuk) and his own team are there to steal the master plates to print the counterfeit money. A shootout takes place and, in the process, Im Cheol-ryung is shot and others killed.

North Korean officials later learn that Cha Ki-seong has fled to South Korea. Im Cheol-ryung is ordered to capture Cha Ki-seong and retrieve the stolen master plates. He is given only three days to complete his mission. For the first time, South Korea and North Korea decide to cooperate to catch a criminal. "Confidential Assignment 2: International" is a film about unpredictable global cooperation between North and South Korean detectives, including Lim Cheol-ryeong (Hyun Bin), a North Korean detective who was sent to the South after a brutal and meticulous criminal organization, Kang Jin-tae (Yoo Hae-jin), a South Korean detective who volunteered to return to the Gwangsu University, and Jack (Daniel Henie), a member of the U.S. FBI.

Hyun Bin, who recently gained explosive popularity not only at home but also abroad for his role as a North Korean officer in the drama "The Crusade of Love," will return to the South as an elite North Korean detective Lim Chul-ryung on a new mission. In the role of Jack, an FBI agent chasing a North Korean criminal organization involved in global crimes, Daniel Henney, who has been busy in Hollywood, starring in the U.S. drama "Criminal Mind" series as well as the Amazon-produced fantasy drama "Wheel of Time," is newly joined and shows a global chemistry with Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae-jin.

Chungmuro's popular actor Jin Sun-kyu, who has personality, acting and box office skills ranging from "Criminal City," "Extreme Job" to "Seungri-ho," will play Jang Myung-jun, the leader of a North Korean crime organization, heralding the birth of a powerful villain character that breathes tension.

Director Lee Seok-hoon, who has led the show with a balanced production with laughter, fun, emotion and scale with "Pirate: Mountain Enemy Go to the Sea" and "Himalaya," doubles expectations by capturing the megaphone.

Confidential Assignment was released in 2017 and was immediately a hit in Korean theaters, garnering 7.81 million viewers and bringing up rumors of a potential sequel. Five years later, the movie has been confirmed to receive a sequel, and the main cast will include returning actors Hyun Bin, Yoo Hae Jin, and Yoona alongside newcomers Daniel Henney and Jin Seon Kyu.

Confidential Assignment 2: International will be as the title claims, an international cooperation between North Korean detective Lim Chul Ryeong (Hyun Bin), South Korean detective Kang Jin Tae (Yoo Hae Jin), and United States FBI agent Jack (Daniel Henney). The trio end up working together in order to complete their own goals.

From sidekick to leading man, actor Yoo Hae-jin still finds film sets difficult after 24 years

The public perception of actor Yoo Hae-jin has changed over the years.

In the early years of his career, he was regarded primarily as a comical sidekick before being recognized as a colorful supporting actor in Korean cinema.

Last year, Yoo nabbed his first lead role after 24 years in show business. He starred in the action-comedy flick “Luck-Key” as an assassin-turned-struggling actor, and the film was a box office success here, selling over 6.5 million tickets and marking a breakthrough for Yoo.

“I think people see the best of you (when you’re on screen). The best scenes are shown in the edited version,” said Yoo humbly at an interview Thursday at a cafe in Samcheong-dong.

This year, Yoo returns as both the lead and trusty sidekick in “Confidential Assignment,” which is also an action-comedy film about two investigators from both sides of the Korean Peninsula.

Hyun Bin plays a disciplined North Korean investigator who trained in the country’s rigorous special forces, while Yoo portrays an unmotivated South Korean cop who is struggling under the burden of work and family.

“But it doesn’t go too seriously into issues of ideology,” Yoo said. “The focus is on sharing emotions.”

Yoo is drawn to films that have a human element. He is interested more in the “little things” that make characters’ relationships come to life on screen than on grand notions.

In a scene in “Confidential Assignment,” Yoo’s character tells his daughter off for sitting on the lap of a stranger.

“Little actions like that aren’t essential to the plot, but it makes you believe that they’re a family. Finding those things are part of the fun of acting.”

Yoo first fell in love with his craft after watching a play in middle school. Despite the opposition of his conservative parents, he matriculated to the Seoul Institute of the Arts. Since then, he has found his footing as one of Korean cinema’s top character actors, through roles in films such as “King and the Clown,” “Small Town Rivals,” “The Unjust,” “Minority Opinion,” “Veteran” and “Public Enemy.”

“But there are things that I can never get used to. I’ve done a lot of movies,” said the prolific Yoo who has starred in over 50 films. “Each set, each character, each environment is different. It feels new every time and it is always difficult.”

Now, at age 47, Yoo said he sometimes seems to be clutching onto energy that keeps slipping away. Through he was more “unstable” as a budding actor, “there was a great energy,” said Yoo. “Everything was so exciting. I woke up excited, I ate meals excited … every action on every set was exciting.”

“When I’m not working, my day is very simple. Some would say boring. I exercise, read a few scripts, have a drink at night. That’s it.”

He trekked up a mountain near his home in the morning before the interview, Yoo said, pulling out a selfie he had taken at the summit.

“I like hiking and running alone,” he said on his exercise routine. “If I go with other people, there’s always something that’s inconvenient. You have to wait for them to arrive on time. You have to make conversation even when you’re out of breath. It’s been quite a while that I’ve been running alone.”

“Confidential Assignment” hits local theaters Wednesday.

SEOUL, Jan. 18 (Yonhap) -- A brief clip of Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae-jin, co-stars of the highly anticipated upcoming action film "Confidential Assignment," interviewing each other about the movie.

"Confidential Assignment" tells the story of two cops from South and North Korea teaming up for a joint confidential assignment to hunt down a North Korean criminal that sneaked into the South.

Hyun is Lim Cheol-ryeong, a shrewd elite North Korean cop, and Yoo is Kang Jin-tae, a less competent South Korean police detective in the film directed by Kim Sung-hoon of "A Wonderful Moment" (2012).

"Confidential Assignment" opened in local theaters on Wednesday.

Hyun Bin will be playing North Korean agent character again in ‘Confidential Assignment’ sequel (VAST Entertainment)

CJ ENM on Friday announced that Hyun Bin will join the sequel of the Korean comedy-action film “Confidential Assignment” and play North Korean agent Lim Cheol-ryeong again.

Released in January 2017, the original “Confidential Assignment” was a movie about an inter-Korean secret police mission. The film at the time garnered more than 7.81 million viewers.

Hyun Bin’s character Lim in the previous film was dispatched to South Korea to capture his superior Cha Ki-seong that murdered his wife and fellow team members.

In the new movie, Hyun Bin’s character will again be dispatched to South Korea to hunt down a leader of a North Korean criminal organization. This time the North Korean agent will show how more comfortable he became working on his mission in South Korea.

Along with Hyun Bin, veteran actor Yoo Hye-jin and Yoona of Girls’ Generation, both of whom appeared in the original movie, will also star in the sequel.

Yoo will be playing South Korean cop Kang Jin-tae that wants again joins his hand with Lim in the sequel. Yoona will be playing a YouTuber who shows her affection for Hyun Bin’s character.

In addition, Korean-American actor Daniel Henney and veteran Korean actor Jin Sun-kyu will join the cast.

Henney will be playing FBI agent Jack, who also works with Lim and Kang to capture the North Korean criminal organization in the movie.

Jin will be playing villain Jang Myeong-jun, who is the leader of the North Korean criminal organization that agents and cops are chasing.

The film will be directed by Lee Seok-hoon, who is known for director hit movies like “The Himalayas“ in 2015 and “The Pirates” in 2014, and begin shooting in February.
