He is completely oblivious to her feelings. So, she resigns herself to loving him from a distance. Afterall, Thien is smart, wealthy, hard-working and good looking. His only “flaw” is being a bit of a player. Unfortunately, that leads to major trouble when he sleeps with the wife of a dangerous mobster. In the aftermath, Thien’s life is in danger. To protect him, Thien’s mother forces him to marry Muey. Muey only agrees for Thien’s safety, but it is also a chance for her to be closer to him. While Thien reluctantly concedes and marries Muey, he wants to keep the relationship secret. (Credit)

Plot/Story (Rating 7/10): LOTS OF SPOILER BELOW!

I have not watched a Thai lakorn in a few years and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed My Husband in Law, even though there were some parts that they could have done without. I can understand why this drama was so loved by many last year (it was so well received that it's currently re-airing in Thailand right now). If you have never watched a Thai lakorn before, don’t expect the same quality you would get from a Korean drama. This is not to shade Thai lakorns, it’s a different type of drama and should be treated as such.

Thien is the second son of a wealthy woman who’s in the hotel industry. Muey is the daughter of a working-class woman. Thien’s mom and Muey’s mom are best friends. When Thien and Muey were younger, Muey went to live with Thien and his family. Muey’s crush developed around this time, but we learned that it started during Thien’s mom’s visits to Muey’s house. Thien’s mom would go over to complain about how reckless her son is to Muey’s mom.

Thien and Muey grew up together, going to the same secondary school and university. They both moved to Bangkok from Phuket and are living in the same house. Thien is your typically playboy and get himself involved with a mobster’s wife, Yada (he didn’t know she was married at the time of their fling). To get himself out of the situation, he lied that he was living with his girlfriend and they were going to get married soon. The mobster threatened Thien that he better see a marriage certificate soon, otherwise he was going to harm Thien.

It’s pretty common in Thai lakorn for stories to start off with some sort of involvement from a mob. My Husband in Law was no stranger to this, and I thought it served its purpose as the foundation for Thien’s and Muey’s developing relationship. What bothered me about it was that it was dragged on for far too long.

Yada was seeking love, maybe more like comfort, from Thien because she was getting verbally and physically abused by her husband, Pondayt (the mobster). There were many scenes where she would be physically assaulted by Pondayt and eventually ended up in the hospital. The assaulting of women in Thai lakorns is something I do not miss. Even during the time I was watching them more frequently, it always bothered me how these women can be assaulted by these men and still end up loving them. I do like that Yada developed some self-love and was able to let go of Thien as well as divorce Pondayt. She often referred to it as being set free.

During Thien’s and Muey’s marriage, Thien would tease Muey and use her to get rid of Yada. Thien actually call Muey his “watchdog” and repeatedly tell her that he would never fall in love with her. While watching the things Thien would do to Muey, I was reminded that many Thai lakorn usually have their male leads be jerks. Again, why?!

The scene that made my heartbreak for Muey was when Thien told his mom that he will divorce her once his situation with Yada is resolved. He also said that Muey is not the woman he love and want to marry. Muey overheard their conversation and Thien noticed this. On their way home, Thien asked her if she listened to everything they were saying. Muey put on her best poker face and said she heard it and that it wasn’t a problem for her. It’s raining and she slipped, hurting herself. He noticed and asked for her to get on his back. She reluctantly does that and started crying. To mask her tears, she decided to move the umbrella, so it was no longer above them. Muey tell Thien that it’s because she wants to play in the rain. I watched this scene back as I’m writing this review and even now, I still feel like she should have just left him! Mark, who plays Thien, said in an interview that this was his most memorable scene because he was so surprised at how well it captured Muey’s heartbreak. Mark didn’t realize during filming that Mew cried that much in the scene.

Thien is a selfish person but he does care for Muey. He is misunderstood often because his way of showing he care does not take into consideration the other person’s feelings. He doesn’t want Muey to tell her friends about their marriage because he doesn’t want her to be known as a divorcee. He would purposely say mean things to her but does the opposite. In some ways, he was so scared of loving her that he did everything he could so he wouldn’t.

Muey and Thien end up going to Myanmar because of the company’s project that’s there. Myanmar was the turning point in their relationship. Thien started to accept the feelings he developed for Muey and Muey did not hold back with how upfront she was with her feelings. With the help of Thien’s friends, Muey was openly hitting on him – it was quite funny to watch his friends betray him to help her. Haha!

Even though Thien realized that he has feelings for Muey, he would not tell her. Worried about how deep her feelings were getting for Thien, Muey decided to take a leave from the company and go study abroad like she’s wanted to. She left him with the divorce papers because she wanted to grant him that wish as well as the opportunity for him to marry the person he loves. Thien goes after her and bring her back. Thien feared that she would run off again and force her to stay in his tent with him – even locking her in the tent with him when he’s working.

At this point, Yada and Pondayt show up again. Muey is kidnapped by Pondayt and is saved by Thien. Of course, this included Thien getting shot too. Thien’s mom is really upset at the harm Thien always put Muey in. She asked that he really start considering Muey’s feeling and not his. Thien’s mom pointed out that Muey wanted to study abroad and Thien wouldn’t let her go do that. He stopped her from pursuing her dream. Thien also learned that Muey developed a fear of water because she almost drowned saving him. When Pondayt first learned about Yada’s relationship with Thien, he chased after Thien’s car and caused the car to fall in the river. Muey was following them because she saw the text Pondayt sent Thien. She jumped into the river to save him, but almost died herself.

Thien decided that he would leave her so she can pursue her studies. He signed the divorce papers and told her in a letter that during their time away from each other, he will learn to love her more than she loved him. What upset me about this part was that Thien leaving Muey was, again, done very selfishly. He did not consider her feelings, he decided this on his own and left her. After asking her to promise that she would never leave him, he decided the fate of their relationship for the both of them.

When they were reunited again, she was not happy to see him and he couldn’t understand why. Muey told Thien that it’s because she’s confused on what he wants – does he really love her and if he did, why did he not consult her feelings at all?

We also learned that Muey is pregnant with Thien’s baby, so she ended up not pursuing her dream of studying abroad. I wished this was not the storyline they gave her. After all that Thien put her through, I wished they allowed her to study abroad and finally start living for herself and not him.

Thien does start expressing how much he loves Muey. When Muey was ignoring him, he would stop by her house to clean it up instead of having her homestay landlady do it. He would also buy her favorite snacks and drop it off too. When he learned about Muey’s kidney failure, he did everything he could to support her. As much as I disliked Thien through the first half of the lakorn, he had a scene during this time that I considered his character’s most memorable scene. Thien met up with Muey’s best friend and they were talking about how Muey would enjoy running whenever she was bored. While listening to Muey’s best friend, you can see how tormented he was over the possibility of losing the person he love.

The lakorn does have a happy ending and after all of that, they better have a happy ending. I did not sit through all of that for there not to be a happy ending! Haha!

Their wedding at the beach was cute and they both looked great in white. My question during this time was, where are the babies? They were not in attendance and it’s strange because you see the babies be born and then never really see them again until the end. Why create this baby arc and not show the babies at all?

Cast/Acting (Rating 8/10):

Mark Prin, where do I even start? I forget how much I enjoy watching him in a lakorn because his personal love life is a bit messy. Maybe not so much messy, it just started off kind of like that with his girlfriend (a well respected actress) possibly cheating on her ex-boyfriend with Mark (they have now been together for 7 years). I’m glad I rediscovered that joy I have watching him through My Husband in Law. He still does well in a jerk role while being sweet too. I don’t feel this way about many actors, but the scenes where Mark just stares lovingly at the leading lady is still just as enticing now as it was before when I was watching his lakorns. Can everyone experience the Mark stares at least once in their life? Haha!

Mew Nittha was equally as great as Muey. I wished they gave her character a little bit more growth, but Mew did well with what she was given. I've always liked Mew as an actress so she was perfect for the role of Muey.

The side characters, Thien’s and Muey’s friends, were fun to watch as well, but in general, I always enjoy these side characters in Thai lakorns. Sometimes I continue to watch the lakorn just for them too.

Production Value (Aesthetics/OST/Cinematography) (Rating: 7/10):

I thought the production quality was fine, nothing stellar but nothing horrible either. Some of the editing was a bit strange but it didn’t affect the quality of the lakorn that much. I did enjoy the music too.

Re-Watch Value (Rating 7/10):

I don’t know if I would watch the whole lakorn again, maybe some of the parts that I enjoyed (which I have already haha).

Would I recommend this for someone to watch? Yeah, I would. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a Thai lakorn like this. Despite some of its shortcoming, I didn’t feel like I wasted my time watching it – I did fast forward some of the mobster and computer hacking parts though (stuff that I thought was dragged on for too long or unnecessary). The chemistry between Mark and Mew was fantastic and I hope to see them in more projects together.

The video below captured all the sweet and not so sweet moments in their relationship:

ahhhh....this one....i heard it was a very cute drama to begin with lols.....

I don't know if it was a cute lakorn in the beginning. Haha! Lots of bickering and bantering between both leads. Thien was not that likeable the first half of the lakorn, but he got a bit better towards the end.

I have a hate/love relationship with Thai lakorn because they are so good to watch when I need something crazy but also frustrating because of how weak they make all the female characters.
