So glad they created a new spin on the reason for the heist to keep the story somewhat different instead of simply a remake!

True. At least this way , people would not be making comparisons. I am always quite impressed by k adaptations. For example Life On Mars is really good - it didn't exactly follow the BBC version either.

I have to say Park Hae Soo is looking quite good. Even in the teasers, he has a sneer which is quite unlike his previous roles 😍

From SCMP:

The hugely successful Spanish series Money Heist has had a Korean makeover and the first part of the show, which counts six episodes, drops this month on Netflix.

The ingenious heist thriller counts many big names in its cast, including Oldboy villain Yoo Ji-tae, Lost actress Kim Yun-jin, Burning’s breakout star Jun Jong-seo and Squid Game actor Park Hae-soo, in addition to many others.

As with the original, the story concerns an ambitious heist of a currency mint hatched by a team of criminals bearing city code names. The twist here is that the story takes place in an alternate reality where the Koreas have unified and combined their currencies (Netflix, June 24).

I agreed @Chocolate. He is the first one I notice in all their photos.

Also, Park Hae Soo is playing ‘Berlin’, who’s (I think) a fan favourite in the original La Casa De Papel. I have high expectations for this character again in this remake! Crossing my fingers and hoping the series will be good.

I remember binging the first 2 seasons on Netflix before finding out Season 3 was in the works. I rarely watch foreign shows (European) and LCDP was an eye opener for me.
@JenL Give the show a try if you have the time - it’s good! FYI on Netflix, they split the original season 1 (Spanish broadcast) into Seasons 1&2, so at least watch the first 2 seasons to finish the original story.

Netflix: A Side-by-Side Comparison of the 'Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area' Characters and Their Spanish Counterparts

Words by LAINEY LOH June 03, 2022

We’re excited to see how the Professor will guide his crew to execute the ultimate heist in an alternate world where North and South Korea have reunited

A new country without borders comes with the printing of a new unified currency that will act as the groundwork to build a stable joint economy. That is, until a crew of thieves—led by the Professor—band together to accomplish a heist without limits. A heist that will go down in history as a revolutionary crime.

Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area will feature director Kim Hong-sun and writer Ryu Yong-jae’s distinct take on the popular Spanish series La Casa De Papel. Like its Spanish counterparts, the remake boasts an assembly of characters with unforgettable personalities who will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Check out a side-by-side comparison of the Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area characters below.

Yoo Ji-tae as The Professor

Yoo Ji-tae from the international award-winning film Old Boy takes the reins from Álvaro Morte to play the Professor, the mastermind behind the heist. The Professor plays a vital role in this series from the very beginning, organising and recruiting his band of thieves from the North and South to steal four trillion won.

“To me, the Professor is a genius strategist who plans the heist through his principles and vision,” says Yoo Ji-tae.

Park Hae-soo as Berlin

03134713-berlin_cover_1500x1064.png

Park Hae-soo from the global sensation Squid Game will shift gears as the cold and brutally honest Berlin, a well-loved character that was previously portrayed by Pedro Alonso.

In Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area, Berlin is a North Korean prisoner who has spent the last 24 years in a concentration camp. As a leader of the heist, the rebellious Berlin believes that total control over his team can only be achieved through fear and division.

Spoiler

Lee Won-jong as Moscow

03134713-moscow_cover_1500x1064.png

Lee Won-jong is a veteran actor who debuted in 1999 and is a familiar face in the Korean entertainment scene.

He will play Moscow, a simple man who only dreams of living a normal life with his son. Like his Spanish counterpart, who was portrayed by Paco Tous, Moscow is a South Korean miner who will be responsible for digging the heist’s grand exit.

Jun Jong-seo as Tokyo

03134713-tokyo_cover_1500x1064.png

Jun Jong-seo, who is known for her role in the Korean thriller film The Call, will embody the role of Tokyo, a feisty character that was previously played by Úrsula Corberó.

In the Korean remake, Tokyo is a North Korean who immigrated to the South with the hope of a better life. But her life in the South does not turn out like how she imagined it would be. Feeling almost hopeless, she meets the Professor who persuades her to join his master plan. Jun describes Tokyo as “a character whose every decision changes the entire flow of the game”.

Kim Ji-hun as Denver

03134714-denver_cover_1500x1064.png

Kim Ji-hun, who was recently confirmed to star in the upcoming Netflix film Ballerina, will play Moscow’s troublesome son, Denver. A multi-faceted and lively character, Denver is a former backstreet gang member, who— like his Spanish counterpart played by Jaime Lorente—will show his own emotional, sexy, and friendly side in the series.

Will the Korean Denver have a unique laugh of his own? Tune in to find out.

Jang Yoon-ju as Nairobi

03134714-nairobi_cover_1500x1064.png

Jang Yoon-ju is one of South Korea’s top models and has established herself as a musician, DJ, author, and actress. The multi-talented star will take the baton from Alba Flores to portray the role of Nairobi in the Korean remake as an expert swindler specialising in counterfeits.

Lee Hyun-woo as Rio

03134713-rio_cover_1500x1064.png

Lee Hyun-woo, who started as a child actor and has since built an impressive repertoire in film and TV including The Return of Iljimae and Secretly, Greatly, will step into the role of resident hacker Rio, a character that was previously played by Miguel Herrán.

In Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area, Rio is a former medical school dropout turned genius hacker who will be pivotal in seizing the security cameras and alarms of the Korea Unified Mint.

Kim Ji-hoon as Helsinki and Lee Kyu-ho as Oslo

03134713-helsinki_cover_1500x1064.png

03134714-oslo_cover_1500x1064.png

Helsinki and Oslo’s Spanish counterparts were cousins who fought several wars together and were portrayed by Darko Perić and Roberto García Ruiz respectively. Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area will see Kim Ji-hoon as Helsinki and Lee Kyu-ho as Oslo. As ethnic Koreans and former members of a Chinese gang, the duo will be in charge of the team's arsenal.

Meet the new la banda and watch them in action when Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area premieres on June 24 on Netflix.

He was the inspiration, right?

That's so funny.

Did you all notice the Tatler article says Park Hae-soon's character spent the last 24 hours years in a North Korean concentration camp 😲 No wonder he is a bit cray cray.

Netflix 'Money Heist' Korean remake to incorporate story of divided peninsula

Crew and cast members of "Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area," a Korean remake of Netflix's 2017 series "Money Heist," pose during a press conference for the series at Coex in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Wednesday. Yonhap

'Money Heist: Korea ― Joint Economic Area' follows group of thieves taking over mint

By Lee Gyu-lee

Netflix is set to launch one of this year's most anticipated series, "Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area," a remake of the platform's hit Spanish crime thriller series "Money Heist" (2017).

The creators of the upcoming Korean original, director Kim Hong-sun and writer Ryu Yong-jae, shared ― in a press conference ― that the fictional story of a divided Korean Peninsula under the process of unifying will make the adaptation unique.

"The hardest part we struggled with, from the beginning, was making the story convincing: how we can make it believable for the viewers that this could really happen in real life," the director said during a press conference for the series held at Coex in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, Wednesday.

"So we came up with the idea to take the situations between South and North Korea and set it in the future. And as the series is streamed abroad, we thought people might be curious about the stories between the two Koreas."

The new crime action series revolves around a group of thieves ― played by Jeon Jong-seo, Park Hae-soo, Lee Hyun-woo, Kim Ji-hun, Lee Won-jong, Jang Yoon-ju, Lee Kyu-ho and Kim Ji-hoon ― who plan to pull off the biggest heist in Korea, on the brink of unification between the North and the South.

Led by the mastermind, nicknamed Professor (Yoo Ji-tae), the group takes over the mint of a unified Korea, holding hostages inside. As they carry out the heist, they face a showdown with the police, led by negotiator Seon Woo-jin (Kim Yun-jin).

The director of the crime thriller series, Kim, previously created the action series "Voice" (2017) and "L.U.C.A.: The Beginning" (2021), and the writer Ryu wrote the Netflix series "My Holo Love" (2020) and horror series "Monstrous" (2022).

Ryu added that the characters of the heisters will be portrayed differently to carry the sentiments and idiosyncrasies of Korea.

"The original series had such animated and appealing characters that made it interesting. And taking that would have just been imitating (the original work). But instead of trying to switch the whole thing, we tried to arrange the characters within our own story. And that process gave us ideas on what changes to make in the characters," Ryu said.

"As we were building those characters, we interviewed the actors and discussed how they analyzed their own characters and shared ideas to develop our own gang."

The actors expressed that although they felt pressure to take part in the remake of such a successful series, they felt confident in the story.

"(The original series) has such a strong fan base. But I felt that a great story will resonate in any country," actor Yoo said. "The reason Korean content can reach abroad is that it has insight and pays attention to detail. (The remake series) captures the charm and humor of our own culture with the South and North Korea as its setting."

"Money Heist: Korea - Joint Economic Area" will premiere on Friday.
