Netflix

Round Six depicts a story of people who decide to become the players of a mysterious survival game that has a whopping 40-million-dollar prize at stake. Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, seems defeated by life after being fired from his job. He decides to join the survival game to win prize money. Sang-woo, played by Park Hae-soo, is Gi-hun’s childhood friend and he also joins the game as he gets in trouble at work despite all the hard work he has done to be where he is at now.

The literal translation of Round Six’s Korean title is ‘Squid Game’ (오징어 게임), which is the street game Gi-hun and Sang-woo played together when they were young. It’s quite a physical game that only ends when there’s a final winner, much like the survival game they play now. It’s named as such because players are to draw different geometric shapes on the ground, which, as a whole, look like a squid.

456 contestants battle it out in a deadly series of children’s games for an irresistable cash prize.

The teaser reveals the show’s dystopian plot. 456 contestants, cash-strapped and eager to participate, are enlisted for a series of games drawn from their childhood to compete for a cash prize of KRW 45.6million. However, the contestants slowly learn what’s at stake: the losers of each round are eliminated via execution. Only one winner will emerge.

The clip for Squid Game also teases a mastermind behind the games, although their face is hidden behind a mask. It is currently unclear if viewers will discover the mastermind’s identity and motivations during the first season of the show.

While more information surrounding Squid Game remains unknown to the public, Netflix said in a press statement that the show will “convey the humanity of the diverse characters who have no choice but to take part in the game”.

@Chocolate I think if it's Netflix's own production, it'll be released at once. If it's a show airing on a Korean network and just using Netflix as its streaming platform, it release based on the airing schedule for that show in Korea.

I read some articles after I asked that question and it seems like it's likely to release all the episodes at once.

What is funny is that NF is also going to do a remake of Money Heist and Park Hae Soo will star in it too.

Shamelessly cross-selling my thread here

Anyway this one looks good. I like Lee Jung Jae , PHS and Wi Ha Joon.

Watch: Lee Jung Jae And Park Hae Soo Enter A Terrifying World Of Deadly Children’s Games In New Drama Trailer

Aug 17, 2021 by C. Hong

Netflix’s upcoming series “Squid Game” has released a new trailer!

“Squid Game” is a new drama about a mysterious survival game with a reward of 45.6 billion won (about $40 million). Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo star as two childhood friends who wind up joining the game—only to learn that there’s much more at stake than just the prize money.

The trailer begins with a group of people dressed in the same green tracksuits, like a prison or a school. Mysterious figures in red tracksuits and masks explain that everyone in the room is desperate and has no hope of paying their debts back and getting their lives on track. They will now participate in a game that can make them rich beyond their dreams.

The participants enter a strange facility where they are led around by the masked people and their information stored in computers. To ensure “fairness,” none of the participants are told what the games will be in advance. The participants are then led out on a field where a giant robot plays a children’s game that involves a group of people running up to one person who has their back to the crowd and trying to tag them before they turn around. If the person turns around, the other contestants must remain frozen in place or be tagged out. The participants are baffled at the childishness of the game until it is discovered that the people who are “out” are brutally killed.

As expected, the participants try to escape the facility as a robotic voice proclaims, “This is just a game. As long as you follow the rules, you can leave this place with the prize money.” Ominously, the voice adds that no player can stop playing the game, and that those who refuse to play will be “eliminated.” At the end, Lee Jung Jae screams, “A person has just been killed!” to the cameras as a group of faceless people watch the deadly game.

Lee Jung Jae And Park Hae Soo’s “Squid Game” Unveils Main Poster + Director Reveals Story Took 10 Years To Plan

Aug 24, 2021 by C. Hong

Netflix’s upcoming series “Squid Game” has unveiled its first main poster!

“Squid Game” is a new drama about a mysterious survival game with a reward of 45.6 billion won (about $40 million). Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo star as two childhood friends who wind up joining the game—only to learn that there’s much more at stake than just the prize money.

The main poster sets out both the stakes of the game and the terrifying consequences should one fail. Most of the contestants, dressed in green tracksuits, are staring up at the clear glass bubble full of prize money, signifying the primary motivation for joining the game. But the group in the center, including Park Hae Soo and Lee Jung Jae, stare toward the camera, suggesting that their primary motivation is to escape the facility alive.

Behind them are the masked guards in red hazmat suits, carrying weapons and blocking the contestants’ escape. These are those who run the games and manage the contestants, but the cloaked figure in a silver mask is the true unknown face behind the games. The poster’s caption reads, “45.6 billion won ruins the adults’ sense of childhood innocence.”

squid-game.jpeg

The director of “Squid Game,” Hwang Dong Hyuk, has worked on movies in diverse genres like “The Fortress,” “Miss Granny,” and “Silenced.” He shared that he had first gotten the idea in 2008 while avidly reading a comic book about a group of people who had fallen into an extreme game. He said, “I wanted to make a survival drama that was the most Korean.”

The games in “Squid Game” are common games that most Koreans play in childhood, except with a fatal twist. “I wanted to create a sense of connection between the nostalgic games we played in our childhood and the sense of never-ending competition that modern adults feel,” he said. “There’s an irony in our most beautiful and innocent memories being changed into the most horrifying reality.”

It was through Netflix that Hwang Dong Hyuk was finally able to bring his idea to life after 10 years of planning. “It’s a challenging project, so I was able to have physical and psychological freedom [through Netflix],” he said. This is the first time that the director has taken on a series rather than a movie, and was able to exercise more freedom about the story’s length, content, and worldbuilding.

“Squid Game” premieres on Netflix on September 17. Check out a teaser here!

So I have been wondering what sort of Korean childhood game they'd play...

https://bleedingcool.com/tv/squid-game-netflix-korean-series-is-black-mirror-meets-battle-royale/

A mysterious invitation to join the game is sent to people at risk who are in dire need of money. 456 participants from all walks of life are locked into a secret location where they play games in order to win 45.6 billion won. Every game is a Korean traditional children's game such as Red Light, Green Light, but the consequence of losing is death. Who will be the winner, and what is the purpose behind this game?

So about Red Light Green Light that is played by Korean kids...

Source: https://koreanyousay.tumblr.com/post/28705061520/game-무궁화꽃이-피었습니다

무궁화꽃이 피었습니다 (Moogunghwa ggotchi peeyuhtsumneedah) Literally, the flower, Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) has bloomed.

This game is just like the Western game “Red light, Green light.” The person who is “it” stands a fair distance away, and turns around and says the phrase “무궁화꽃이 피었습니다.” During this time, everyone else who was behind the starting line, will go as fast as they can to try and tag the person who is saying the phrase. The catch is that one doesn’t know how quickly the person who is “it” will say it, and if you are caught moving after the person who is “it” turns around, then you have to start from the beginning.

- So I suppose in this case whoever who is caught moving after the person who is "it" will be shot dead! :poliWeird:
