Shin Hyun Been, Goo Kyo Hwan, Kwak Dong Yeon, Nam Da Reum, And More Cast In New Horror Drama By “Train To Busan” Director

Monstrous.jpg

Shin Hyun Been, Goo Kyo Hwan, Kwak Dong Yeon, Nam Da Reum, Kim Ji Young, and Park Ho San are confirmed to star in the new TVing drama “Monstrous” (literal title)!

“Monstrous” is about the people who are lured in by a curse from “that thing” that shouldn’t have come out into the world and tells the story of archaeologists who chase after monstrous cases that have never been heard of. As a village gets swept up in disaster with the discovery of a mysterious possessed statue of the Buddha, the confusion from the people who face the strange terror and the process of chasing after it will deliver great suspense to viewers.

The drama is penned by director Yeon Sang Ho, who directed “Train to Busan” and “Peninsula” and wrote the OCN drama “The Cursed,” as well as Ryu Yong Jae, who wrote “Pied Piper” and “My Holo Love.” It will be directed by Jang Gun Jae, who won Best Screenplay at the 16th Busan Film Critics Award and Best Director and Best Screenplay at the 3rd Wildflower Film Awards with the film “A Midsummer’s Fantasia.”

Goo Kyo Hwan will be playing the eccentric archaeologist Jung Ki Hoon, who researches bizarre supernatural phenomena. As Lee Soo Jin’s (Shin Hyun Been’s) ex-husband, he’s a figure whose life changed due to an unintentional incident. Jung Ki Hoon currently runs the occult magazine and YouTube channel titled “Monthly Ghost Story.” While researching the possessed statue of Buddha that appears in Jinyang county, he encounters an unbelievably strange phenomenon. Due to the powerful presence Goo Kyo Hwan has had in his previous works, viewers are looking forward to his upcoming transformation.

Shin Hyun Been will be playing the genius pattern cryptanalyst Lee Soo Jin, who ends up having to face the terrible disaster. After losing her only daughter, Lee Soo Jin puts down everything to return to Jinyang county where she begins to experience inexplicable events. Shin Hyun Been will portray the complicated feelings of her characters as she chases after an unknown yet terrifying truth.

Kim Ji Young will be playing the police officer Han Seok Hee. Although she has great charisma and leadership skills, she has more difficulty dealing with her son Han Do Kyung (Nam Da Reum) than she does with the petty criminals that visit the police station. She struggles to save her son from the terrible incident that takes place in the village. Kim Ji Young will use her experienced acting to make the drama even more realistic.

Park Ho San will be playing Kwon Jong Soo, the head of Jinyang county, where the disaster takes place. Kwon Jong Soo had been planning a new tourism business to help the town develop and flourish, but he falls into a state of loss due to the unexpected situation. With his unique way of stealing the spotlight, Park Ho San will impress with his powerful acting in “Monstrous.”

Kwak Dong Yeon will be taking on the role of Jinyang county’s troublemaker Kwak Yong Joo. With a defiant gaze and a problematic attitude, he’s a figure that appears twisted even from a single gaze. To Kwak Yong Joo, the terrible disaster that befalls the village is just another interesting story. Having garnered popularity through his recent drama “Vincenzo,” viewers are highly anticipating Kwak Dong Yeon’s next performance.

Amidst all the confusion in Jinyang county, the only person who doesn’t lose their resolve to be good is Han Do Kyung, who will be played by Nam Da Reum. Han Do Kyung is deeply intertwined with Kwak Yong Joo, who is displeased with him. Although Han Do Kyung wants to live an ordinary life without getting mixed up in noisy incidents, the disaster awakens his spirit of resistance. Already, viewers are looking forward to seeing how Nam Da Reum will capture the audience with the upcoming drama.

The production team of “Monstrous” shared, “We will showcase a supernatural thriller that’s on another level. Please look forward to the diverse group of people who will fall into a state of chaos and the synergy of the actors who will complete a unique world.”

“Monstrous” is slated to air via TVing in the first half of 2022.

The teaser starts off with archaeologists uncovering a Buddhist statue. One man comments, “It’s not just a Buddha statue. It’s a gwibul (a haunted Buddhist statue) filled with a spirit.'” Another voiceover urgently says, “We took out something that we shouldn’t have!” The captions sends chills up one’s spine as they read, “They shouldn’t have discovered it. Those who see the eyes will be trapped in hell.”

Jung Ki Hoon and Lee Soo Jin get entangled in a series of nightmares. People are spotted fleeing while screaming as ghastly figures chase after them. Kwon Jong Soo (Park Ho San) looks scared out of his wits as he’s cornered along with a group of other people. Troublemaker Kwak Yong Joo (Kwak Dong Yeon) claims, “We’d better tie all of them up quickly. Who knows when they’ll go insane?”

How do you like this suit? 😅

Umm...I like the fit but the design on the suit is umm....interesting.

I forgot this drama was premiering this month too. Why are all of these darker dramas airing all on the weekends? :jiminbtssigh:

Probably a mix of Happiness, Hellbound and Dark Hole combined together. I appreciated the archeology background in the beginning, but that's all. The rest is just a pure violence with stabbing non stop starting from ep 3 or so.

The dynamic between husband and wife as the lead is not interesting. I prefer him and the policewoman together, they're more fun to see? Especially when hiding from those monstrous birds. (I swear the pigeon lurking near my apartment , probably one day will go crazy like this 😅, they've been non stop trying to steal my food 🤣).

Overall the cinematographic is quite gorgeous and super dark, the pace is quite fast too. No regret watching this, but actually nothing new brought up here.
