    Synopsis
    Season 1

In 18th-century China, the Qing Dynasty’s Emperor Qianlong rules the land. The Emperor is unaware that he has a 17-year-old daughter, named Xiazi Wei, who was born after he had a brief fling with her mother. Xiazi Wei is determined to meet her father and travels from her provincial home to the Forbidden City in an effort to seek him out. However, gaining an audience with the Emperor proves far more difficult than she expected. But Xiazi Wei refuses to give up hope and remains in the capital – where she one day meets Xiaoyan Zi, a streetwise orphan girl. The girls become firm friends and hatch a plan to meet the Emperor during a hunting trip. However, their plan is thwarted when Xiaoyan Zi is injured by an arrow fired by the Emperor’s son. The Emperor finds Xiaoyan Zi, and mistakes her for his own daughter, taking her to the Imperial Court. Will the truth out? And will Xiazi Wei ever be able to take her rightful place in the palace?

    Season2

The year is 1760. Princesses Xiaoyan Zi and Xiazi Wei are adored by Emperor Qian Long. But things are about to change for the young girls. The Empress dislikes both of them, and plots to turn the powerful Dowager Empress against them. Both of the princesses are from poor backgrounds, and she instantly takes a dislike to them. Meanwhile, the princesses meet the lover of an Uyghur chieftain at a restaurant. He explains the sad tale of his love for the Uyghur chieftain’s daughter – explaining that she has been sent to become the concubine of Emperor Qian Long. The young women resolve to help the chieftain’s daughter and succeed in sneaking her out of the palace. However, when the Emperor learns what has happened, he sentences them both to death in a fit of fury. With help from their friends, they escape the palace. But the scheming Empress wants rid of them forever, and sends a band of deadly assassins after them! Can the princesses escape the deadly threat – and might they one day return to the Imperial Palace?

    Season 3

At the frustration of Yong Qi's lack of heir, the Grand Empress has made Yong Qi marry another girl so that he may produce a son and maybe one day become the emperor. Xiao Jian, Xiao Yan Zi's brother is in love with Qing Er, but he has a grudge with the emperor for killing their parents many years ago. Since Qing Er is a popular person in front of the Grand Empress, her marriage is within the empress's hands. In order for them to be together, Yong Qi must marry the other girl. Yong Qi chose to be the hero and sacrificed himself so that Qing Er and Xiao Jian could be together. What is worse is that the nation bordering China is going into war and Er Kang became drafted. During one of the big battles he loses his memory and falls for another girl. Will Er Kang return to Zi Wei? Will Yong Qi fall for his second wife?

    Synopsis

In the later years of China’s Sui Dynasty (581-618), Wen Lou takes up the imperial crown. Protocol dictates that he may keep a group of concubines at court, so his royal advisors select a number of women from high-profile families for the task. Among their number is Bu Meng , the daughter of a notable civil servant who dutifully serves the imperial family. But not everyone wants to be an imperial concubine – least of all Bu Meng!

She does her utmost to avoid having to spend any time with the Emperor, contriving to avoid him whenever possible. Eventually, she finds unlikely friends among the other concubines, whose number includes a blubbering bag of nerves, a highly trained martial arts expert and a wily woman with plenty of street smarts. Still, Bu Meng is determined to spend as little time as possible with the Emperor. Irked by her behaviour, one day the Emperor picks a quarrel with her – and is surprised to find that she gives as good as she gets when she’s in an argument. He finds himself strangely drawn to her feisty personality and resolves to win her love. Will romance bloom for this unlikely couple? Or will Bu Meng avoid the Emperor’s affections until the end of their days?

  6. I've been feeling like white tea today. My friend brought this one for me from China some time ago, so I just made it. I drink 80% of the day tea, so I'm trying not to post each cup for the sake of not spamming and still having something to post after a while. But this one is a bit more fancy than my average ones so I felt like sharing haha.

helllooooo..welcome to the forums and glad you found us.  I am so impressed that you speak so many languages.  I am so bad at learning new ones!

Thank you! But honestly, I suck at languages too. And I speak them all to some degree, but not all fluently. I'm more of a mathematics and computer kinda person. It helps that Chinese and Japanese have little exceptions. Allows me to work more on logics. There is also many logic in the grammar and in the characters, which helps. For me, mainly vocabulary is difficult. Next to that, Dutch education puts a big importance in learning languages. It's good for mental growth and business (the country is mainly build on international trading, and it's economics still relies a lot on that). I actually had Dutch, English, German and French class in high school, but I still can't speak any more French than saying my name and where I'm from despite having had class for 3 years 😆.

Honestly, It's mainly that I come from a area with a local language (Nedersaxon), those areas have to learn standard Dutch as well. Considering it's 10 minutes walking from the German border, you'll get a lot of experience form there too (due to difference in taxes Germany is often a lot cheaper than The Netherlands so visiting is often lucrative). As for English, our education starts in primary school and a lot of TV and internet we use in English, so we kinda automatically use it a lot which also helps. That already gives me 4 languages automatically, all of which are from the same language family which is always easier. Then Japanese I learned because of what I wanna do, and Chinese just became interesting from multiple hobby perspectives.

Beside, my German, Japanese, and Chinese are rather limited right now(my Japanese is officially somewhere between CEFR A2 and CEFR B1, my Chinese is CEFR A1, German I got no official test/certificates in). In German and Japanese I can survive basic situations with broken speech, but my vocabulary is just too lacking for most complexer situations (although sometimes my vocabulary is weird. Like I keep forgetting the verb for opening doors, but I know what artificial intelligence is in Japanese 🙃. Elevators in Japan made it impossible to forget the verb for closing a door tho. I can still hear that female voice say ドアが閉まります). Beside in Japanese, I still have to think about grammar, so although I can do reasonably well when I take the time (and still make the occasional mistake but nothing too bad), I will easily miss (possible important) nuances in day to day conversation. In Chinese I'm even more limited, and pronouncing tones is hard for me too. Al trough I have a decent sound vocabulary by now, I'm not used to tones at all, so although I can do it when thinking about it, it's hard in normal speed conversation.

I need to study much much more. Especially my Japanese, I feel you can't go to a country trying to find work without learning about language and culture first, so I need much more improvement. Wish my Japanese was like my English and Dutch. I still feel dumb and scared trying to speak, especially to natives, and I stutter because I worry I look like a fool since I know it needs improvement 😭.

But I think languages are super interesting so I wanna learn more, although I want to master Japanese and Mandarin better first. Cantonese, Russian, and Latin are among the list of things I wanna learn for example. Maybe Korean and Hindi too. But it's so difficult, I would be surprised if I can even manage to master the ones I study now in my lifetime.

Wow, this became a lot longer than intended. Sorry if that's bothersome 😓

  8. I'm feeling like having something really sweet atm. Bubble tea is extremely hard to get here. In the bigger cities you have a few stores, but that's it. Even then, I haven't found warm bubble tea yet. I only found out hot bubble tea existed when I went to Asia 😱. Now I'm in love but can't buy fresh one 😭. Luckily, there are Asian supermarkets where I can buy instant bubble tea haha. This specific brand and flavour made me proud. When I got this one I only studied Chinese for a short time yet (and I still haven't studied long), yet I could read enough Chinese to understand the instructions, even trough I don't know all the characters. Shamelessly making a shot with my TV in the background, because I'm watching Chinese drama 😂😂😂.

    qTueCJW.jpg

Normally I'm a huge fan of tea tho. I have a lot of Chinese and Japanese tea. The tea in The Netherlands is generally really bad quality. Like, rejected quality leaves pulverised with added artificial flavour and colour bad. I have some from Asian supermarkets, as well as some directly from China that my friend brought when she went back summer last year. Those are the nicest ones I have, better quality than the ones from the Asian supermarket, but they simply don't sell them. Probably because of the cost of import together with few people wanting to pay so much for tea (after the import and shipping fees). Sadly I can't get a replacement for those as easily.

Coffee I only like when its not a drink. I love coffee flavoured chocolate, ice-cream, etc. But I dislike coffee drinks, be it warm or cold 😅.

  9. I'm from The Netherlands. Originally grew up in the countryside near Germany but now live in Kampen, a tiny city, yet the oldest in my country. What I like about my country is the freedom and diversity. You can do almost anything here and just be yourself without any real consequences, general social norms are very loose. I also enjoy the old historic buildings around me. I also like how we tend to have a somewhat high standard in electronics, causing us to have things like high-speed internet in almost any house, and be among the first countries to test new electronics and online services. Here is a shot from the city gates outside which is a pretty public park, this is a photo I took. Next to it a shot from the inner city, which comes from the official tourist site of The Netherlands (holland.com).

    rFjkmmO.jpg68637_fullimage_kampen_citycenter.jpg

I might try to emigrate in a year to two years tho. As much as I like my country, I can't do the work I really want here, or in the west for that matter (I wanna make software for HRI or human-like AI). Since Japan is the biggest in this I've been looking into emigration for a few years now (I'm still in university which I need to finish first). Culturally it's quite the opposite of my country so that's going to take some effort. When I was there I missed things from here, but as soon as I'm here I miss things from there haha. Anyways, that caused me to learn about Japanese culture and language, the later for which I traveled each week to another university 2 hours from my house because I wanted to ensure my Japanese was thought well and they are the best language school in the country. I don't watch much Japanese TV, also because it's the hardest to find in my country beside anime (which I like sometimes but in general I tend to prefer live-action shows. Sadly those aren't nearly as populair abroad).

As for my interest in Chinese things, some friends of mine are Chinese (living in my country), and during my last project in Japan I made some more Chinese friends (living in China). They thought me some basics about Chinese culture. Since most foreigner in Japan are Chinese and I fell in love with Chinese palace drama I decided to minor in Chinese language and culture too. That way, keeping up with my Chinese friend (who mainly post on WeChat and Weibo) and watching drama (even when there are no subs yet) will become more easy.

My interest into Korean stuff came because I once heard Kpop somewhere (years ago, before the Korean wave) and liked it. As far as Korean stuff goes I still don't do much more than listen to music, but I do have some serries on my to watch list. I'm also a big fan of Korean skincare and make-up.

Otherwise, I'm mainly just a computernerd. As mentioned I'm studying software engineering. Altrough I'm a student I also regularly do projects with companies. I'm interested in almost anything computers (with obviously extra interest into socialisable computer stuff), gaming, watching TV, collecting CDs (of music I like, which ranges from K/C/Jpop to underground black metal and a lot in between), and find interest in learning about different cultures (both current and from the past) and random (useless) facts. Aside of English, Japanese and Mandarin I also speak Dutch, Nedersaxon, and some German. I want to learn more languages if I ever have the time.

I'm also one of those not so regularly visiting people. I might be active every single day for a while, than not be seen for months. Really depends on what I'm doing and how busy I am.

Also, is there any actual romance? I know from the descrip that Lucifer ends up helping a human female detective, but was wondering if a love line develops or not. Wait! That would be a spoiler, if you told me, right? Just after asking for not too many spoilers. LOL

Okay, will be back to comment after I actually watch some episodes.

Haha in that case I can savely say that there is a love related storyline, but it's a bit more complex than "let's try find a way to be together/to get his heart" like in many dramas (obviously not the only options used, and a huge generalisation of plotlines, but in general a common theme). It's also doesn't feel very drama like to me, more "American police shows meet supernatural" if that makes sense 😂.

Fair points. I haven't managed any historical Chinese dramas yet.

They're al time favourites for me. Especially these harem palace dramas. It might sound typical maybe, but nothing better for drama than putting a bunch of pretty woman in a palace with one guy, and whatever this guy's thinks of you determines not only your, but also your childrens' and families, entire future. Beside, I love how they take their time for plotlines, without having seasons they can make each subplot as long and short as needed, as there are no season finales or "it must fit in the X number of episodes a season has" to think about.

Even with the coronavirus, I'm still working full time, though lately I feel as if I'm skiving quite a bit at work. (Shhh. Don't tell my boss.)

Haha like I said, I have vacation now. It's just that most other possible activities are canceled now too causing my free time to be more than normally during vacations. When work starts again I'll have less time, but for now my entire days are filled with TV and games 😂. But after work I'm often tired, so I tend to still watch 1-3 episodes TV a day despite working full time, depending on how much chores I have to do 😅. Just got no energy for something more active lol.

Woops, sorry for making 2/3 of the comment off-topic. Let's stop it here 😅

So, to those of you who have watched it thus far, how does Lucifer evolve as a character across the 5 seasons thus far? If you can comment without spoiling it too much since I am likely to start watching this at some point.

I watched season 1-4 when I found them. Now slowly watching the first half of 5, but the long wait makes me a bit less excited than with the first 4 and by now I'm busy watching other stuff as well. Without spoilers, I would say at least half the show is about his character development, be it directly or indirectly, so it's a rather big topic. But in a good way, as it's also an interesting one.

I think I'm scared by the fact that there are already 5 seasons! At this moment, I'm barely able to keep up with kdramas which only have 1 season! Though, I know that there are kdramas which are now going to be multi-season affairs, but meaning 2 or 3, rather than 6 or 13.

At least the seasons are short (10-16 episodes each), unlike those Chinese palace dramas that go between 70-90 episodes. In total this show has less episodes than those 1 season dramas 🤣. If anything, corona+vacation gives me too much free time, don't even wanna know how much hours I spend watching TV. Makes me dislike 1 (short)season shows, need to search new ones too soon. Finished multiple 10-12 season ones.
