I thought it was Lee Joon Gi. But it wasn’t Lee Joon Gi as I knew him. I’m talking about that ‘Lee Joon Gi’ who’s starring in tvN’s Wed/Thu drama ‘Flower of Evil.’

In fact, early on in the drama, people suspected Do Hyunsoo, who’s been posing as Baek Heeseong, of having committed the murder because he is the son of serial killer Do Minseok and a psychopath. Of course, from Episode 2 onwards, Do Hyunsoo has proven people wrong by, for instance, setting Kim Moojin free after having him locked up, and letting Park Gyungchun live despite what the latter put him through. In a turn of events after another, the doubts about Hyunsoo dissipated. Even then, however, there still remained a doubt that Hyunsoo might be the accomplice.

Later on, the real killer of the village head turned out to be his sister Haesoo. Hyunsoo’s persistent search for the accomplice to clear his name has dissipated viewers’ doubts. Then, doubtful viewers started to look at Baek Manwoo, who made Hyunsoo, a wanted suspect, pretend to be his son, as a possible killer. Such a plot twist after another has made people give a thumbs up to the meticulously-written script.

But when I said “I thought it was Lee Joon Gi, but it wasn’t Lee Joon Gi,” I was not merely talking about the drama’s plot. It is also about the way the industry and viewers look at Lee Joon Gi as a leading actor. While in awe because this is not the same ‘Lee Joon Gi’ as they have seen, they are also surprised by his more mature acting skills.

Ever since he skyrocketed to stardom through his movie ‘King and the Clown,’ he has always wowed people with his acting, but how come these people suddenly began to see him in a new light through ‘Flower of Evil’? People sometimes say there’s a moment when actors break the mold they have built for themselves and evolve. It seems now is exactly that moment for Lee Joon Gi.

I have seen him in a wide range of works and he’s been such a multitalented and diligent actor. He has always done a great job, and has always worked hard. This time, he has also succeeded in giving a performance where he looks more comfortable with his role. From some point onwards, it seemed the talent and the hard work that he had put in stood out more prominently off-screen, instead of being absorbed naturally into the project he did. But in ‘Flower of Evil,’ the actor is hooking viewers into the story thoroughly as his character himself. He no longer looks like ‘star Lee Joon Gi,’ but he looks like ‘Do Hyun Soo’ in a crisis.

Watching Do Hyun Soo in the drama, viewers felt chills down their spines early on, and now feel sympathy and sadness for him. He was a complex, mysterious character because initially it was hard to stay whether this cold psychopath was pretending to be a husband and father in a happy family, or he really meant it. But when he told his sister he never loved Cha Jiwon, viewers’ hearts sank. However, as the drama went through ups and downs, both Do Hyunsoo and viewers have come to realize that what he’s been feeling is love. Viewers end up cheering on this desperate character Do Hyunsoo, and it’s because of Lee Joongi’s engrossing performance.

At this point I should mention Kim Chulgyu’s directing skills. In the hands of this director, who presented quality works such as tvN ‘Mother’ and KBS2 ‘On the Way to the Airport,’ Lee Joongi’s acting truly shines through. Director Kim’s magic touch does the trick for the other actors, as well. If anyone doubted Moon Chaewon could play a homicide detective, they should be silent now. He also chose Seo Hyunsoo, a lesser known actor, for the major role of Kim Moojin, and has helped him become a reliable actor.

Viewers would not be tearing up watching the Do Hyunsoo and Cha Jiwon couple who cry desperately, without Lee Joongi and Moon Chaewon’s acting skills, as well as the directing skills of the director who orchestrates the whole drama. This is why I agree with the tagline that describes ‘Flower of Evil’: intense, emotional chase thriller.

I am curious about the ending of ‘Flower of Evil,’ a mysterious viewing experience since it makes us see an actor in a new light and view a genre picture as a romance drama. It has been a meticulously-crafted, entertaining ride, so just a plain ‘happy ending’ would be out of the question. With only five episodes remaining, the drama is raising our expectations, making us wonder how many more plot twists there will be, and what kind of powerful ending ‘Flower of Evil’ will leave us with.

  2. @Tofu - the dialogue of grandpa and Hye Joon always tug my heartstrings. Their conversation are heartfelt specially with the chemistry of the two actors.

About the sponsorship, I guess this is a risk for them to discuss as early as now. Also it cracks me up about the bold statement of Charlie to Hye Joon. How can he just represent us fangirls ?  :lenny:

@stroppyse  The jajangmyeon vs jjampong reference was  humble yet striking . I am happy to see their dynamics together because Hye Joon needs someone whom he can call home - could be a person whom he can be safe, comfortable and valued.

The location is at Cheonggyecheon Stream (청계천)

Cheonggyecheon Stream starts from Cheonggye Plaza, just off Sejong-ro Avenue. Cheonggye Plaza roughly covers an area of 2,500 square meters, and is located at the starting point of Cheonggyecheon Stream. The square, created based on the design of traditional Korean bojagi (a colorful wrapping cloth), features the elegant beauty of traditional stonework that is colorful yet refined.

  4. @stroppyse I love the dynamics of grandpa and Hye Joon :Uwu:. What a duo of crybabies comforting each other, being honest on what they feel. They cry, I cry.  When they both hold hands to go to their room I cant even see the screen properly because they got me in tears again. Then the door fell  ! :psweatduck: This show and its comedic timing.

    spacer.png

I guess the reason why Jungha witheld then knowledge of her being a fan to Hye Joon is because she does want to stay grounded? She could be labeled as a dense fan but at the same time I agree with her.
    spacer.pngspacer.png

And the designer offering sponsorship to Hye Joon. Wow. I didn’t see that coming from the show. It’s like the writer opened a pandora box for audience to see. What an irony that someone like the designer would throw the bone at Hye Joon when the reason is “love” and not business. Meanwhile Hye Joon is being pressured by his own family to reject reality in order for him to earn money instead of pursuing his passion.

I would want to understand the parents on this, but applying my own experience I would be the grandpa crying over his grandson’s hustles in order to get what he want by doing what he like.

The reunion--Three years in the making

When the casting for Criminal Minds Kr was announced, I remember I was squealing both in my desk and on twitter. As if there are kdrama gods out there that synchronized all possibilities for this pairing to happen. :wow:

Then it struck me that Criminal Minds is a crime procedural drama. NO LOVE ARC. :nervous: It got me mixed emotions then, because I was so trusting with the anticipated chemistry of these two stars, not discounting their acting chops offered on the table. The die is cast. Okay then, let's enjoy the show !

Right after the presscon, me and my friends were giddy once again after Lee Joon Gi pronounced this one:

    EdxIQ7UUEAAzWCd?format=jpg&name=4096x409

    Spoiler

He also mentioned on vlive that both him and Chaewon agreed that they need to have a comeback project in the future--a melodrama /romance drama as the genre. After Criminal Minds , they both ventured in another drama projects in 2018. Lee Joon Gi took another action/romance drama "Lawless Lawyer" while Moon Chae Won worked on "Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter".

2019 was a year of break from both of them. Joongi became busy since April of that year for his Delight tour. Meanwhile , Chaewon showed a glimpse of her personal life thru her instagram's movie recos. Then around September, some changes were noticed by Chaewon's fans. She again followed Namooactor's account, at the same time began liking photos related to Criminal Minds/Joongi.

In October , another series of movie recos were posted by Chaewon--with themes related to dark / noir romance. Joongi also posted one video hinting a comeback--a rose and a knife with hashtag new movie.

In January 14, 2020, news of casting was released. Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won reunites in a romance-suspense drama as husband and wife.

    Fate and Destiny

This is becoming a label of sort to this couple, because there were side stories revealed about the process of casting for this drama. We usually find details of the behind the scenes from few dramas, a discretion of the PD if they opt to reveal or not (for example, Hospital Playlist) .

In the case of Flower of Evil, we learned of the following events, thanks to Joongi's IG live, the process were elaborated more than what we initially learned from the 10min interview by tvN.

    Quote

"Its my 2nd time working with Moon Chae Won after we worked together in Criminal Minds. Actually chaewon-ssi received the offer first for this Flower Of Evil drama and I received later. I remember when I was thinking a lot about this drama I talked with chaewon-ssi a lot over the phone.

I called her  for a few times and shared my concerns. Because for me this drama would be too big for me... I thought is it a bit too early for me to take. And since I have worked with chaewon-ssi before, I wondered if we could convey these complicated emotions and pain as a mysterious married couple. As well as 14 years of lies and truth . True feelings; love and hate; I thought it would be so difficult for me to express those things.

To express the complicated emotions, pain, and portray the 14 years married couple with the lies and truth in between, I thought it was going to be difficult. Also chaewon-ssi and I, our image is kind of... good? Or not? I'm sorry. Anyway that's why I was so worried.

I found it so demanding to portray this man in a complex and subtle way, who has run this family for 14 years.  Back then, I also thought about it simply: that I would have to play a father and a husband even though I have lived a (completely different life). So the role felt like something so far away.

That's why, at first, Chaewon-ssi couldn't directly say 'I hope oppa take it'. She was very careful since she knew how concerned I was .

But then at the end I think if I can't surpass this mountain there will be no next step for me. What I should look at is the next step so I am going to make this drama well, make a good character out of it. It doesn't matter if I fail. What good would it do if I run away just because I feel afraid? This is too good an opportunity to pass up so I decided to take it.

I remember Chaewon being so happy about it.

She said she was so eagerly waiting for me to call and say OK.

I am so grateful to her for toughing it all out with me throughout the whole process.

We actually have different personalities. Chaewon-ssi is a bit quite, serious, and passive or introvert? In other words, she is serious and a calm person. That's how she approaches her own character. Sometimes she would be tired too and when it happens I will *do gestures* (t/n maybe he means lift up mood). -

Since we have different personalities, we can complement each other.  I also learn a lot from Chaewon-ssi.

When Chaewon-ssi shows different emotions it makes me think how to respond with another expression too. Actually acting is not about only one person who do the best. Reaction is important.  I think an actor who reacts well is a really good actor. I want to be that kind of actor as well. That's why I think complementing each other is important. That's what 'ensemble ' means.

"So Chaewon-ssi with her own style and I am more like energetic. If I receive something from her and feel grateful then I should reciprocate, right  ? Then Chaewon will also accept what I give her and make it into an expression . I have a different approach so I think we make a really great combination .

Also , off the set , if I can, I also try to cheer many people up, including Chaewon .

    Spoiler

    ImageImage

I am very confident that these two are super close as of now. In Korea, there is this culture of them not easily giving your number away even to your co-actors. Perfect example is when Joongi mentioned in healing camp that he doesn't have Shin Min Ah 's number. And the amount of phone calls these two had?  JG mentioned during his vlive interview in LL that he is more on text messages. Also , Moon Chae Won usually don't make phone calls with opposite sex

Are they really that close? Yes.:Ghastlel:

For one, the worries JG mentioned were shared to her. And they are still in the casting process. At least we know that Chaewon understood JG's worries when it comes to accepting a project that may affect both of their image.

And they were happy after that. We can see through the presscon how they brag about this drama, hoping that this will be their another phase of life character. It also shows on the finished material every episode that is airing. Their chemistry had been upgraded that their bond is one among the most admired out there.

Tips on travelling in Seoul--subway is the most convenient, because the station's notification is also in English which will be easier to navigate specially if you will go to a certain place for the first time. Also download the subway korea map (I was in daze while reading this app at first but it came as  a handy eventually!) for guide. Additional app that could be helpful will be the kakao map where you can have important landmarks in that map including photos. The directions are close to accurate. It does not come in English language but it is equally useful. I use google and coincide it with the kakao map.

Here is my DAY 1 : 𝑅𝑒𝒶𝓈𝑜𝓃 𝓌𝒽𝓎 𝐼 𝓁𝒾𝓀𝑒 𝒞𝒽𝒶𝑒𝓌𝑜𝓃

There are maybe a lot of reasons why I like her as an actress. Aside from her elegant , goddess like beauty, Moon Chae Won exudes enigma which I find very attractive of her. She is a quiet , introvert person in real life--with only a few off cam photos , videos or blog about her. Despite her mysticism , she is one among those who evoke class when it comes to philosophies in life. She had proven her niche in the entertainment industry with her various fantastic performance in her projects. With that she becomes an epitome of dreams do come true if you work hard for it.

  12. @stroppyse I also finished episode 1 without knowing it! I like how it is relaxed , taking its time to built the tension until the first meeting of the two leads. And wow, from the teasers alone I already felt the chemistry of Bogum and Park Sodam —their first meeting did not disappoint 🥰.

    Spoiler

    • It is noted how Hyejoon first met Jungha thru her profession which I seldom see in kdrama romance tropes. It looks like a fated first meeting but Jungha still worked for it to happen, she waited for the right time. Wow clap to that. spacer.png
    • Hyejoon and his grandfather- I am totally did not see this coming. Their scenes hit me home because I was close to my late grandfather. Park Bogum brilliantly executed that phone call scene with subtlety. Also when Hyejoon hold his grandpa’s hand while his dad is scolding them both.
