@40somethingahjumma why yuanniang catches his eye hehe... That i can answer. She never catches his eyes. It was an arranged marriage between luo n xu. Xu had a political downfall due to ou scheming. Luo grandpa stood by for the xu in court n ask the emperor for a leniency to allow lingyi the eldest surviving son then to go battlefield to make atonement. That had set the luo - xu fate. Before xu fully recovered, the luo betrothed their eldest daughter from the main wife to lingyi. Yuanniang by status is a di daughter (daughter of msin wife) from a high ranking officer n lingyi family had not fully regain their forner glory then. . So it is a privilege for the xu. So lingyi always felt indebted to luo. So he treated yuanniang well.. This also mean lingyi n yuanniang was young to start off with. Young couple. N i m sure during their marriage he was away alot because he is still rebuilding the family n he already had qin (n maybe wen too) before yuanniang n w a scheming controlling mother like madame luo, yuanniang did slowly turn scheming like how to scheme on tong case, shiyi n qiao case, distrusting to lingyi n cintrolling n grabbing privileges for luo n chunge. All these while he remain very patient w yuanniang including agreeing to her last wish to marry shiyi. He should be stsrting as liking yuanniang. It was poignant she asked for his forgiveness in her last breath. he did not like shiyi but still willing to give her the dignity n respect accord to the main wife. I think he is jusy sort of character. He never shame her in public but appear respectful in front of others. Like how he told off qiao for grabbing those brocade allocated for shiyi with the 5 poison heart analogy. Welcome n i m happy we r entertaining u. Haha....

I m wondering what's ur opinion of men having mistresses or concubines. I mean definitely it is not acceptable for any sane women nowadays. But which is the lesser of the two evils. Many European nobles n royalty practices having mistresses like u know khmm... the C & C. Muslims, other asian cuktures n ancient chinese practices 2nd wives which is basically i call concubines.

Young ou will eventually need to go to ask for her hand in marriage n he need to do that as ou yan xing. Those days wo parents permission it is technically an elope. N with yuanniang already married to a xu, luo will not go married off their daughter to an ou, the xu deadliest enemy. Luo will never allow it to happen..one simply cannot drink tea from two houses at the same time. So his birth n her mum death already make it impossible for him d.

Tq for writing ur insights n thoughts too. I think we hv realky exercise our brain cells w this drama which makes it more meaningful n thoughts provoking compared to any sweet romcom. I will go for houye w shiyi too. Not everyone get that intense deep love which is sweet n beautiful at the same time. Life is only colourful if one can taste everything bitter sweet sour n salty. Not everyone can really experience that till death do us apart kinda lovw. Such togetherness is amazing n i stand in awe. I remembered reading lee kuan yew memoir n his relationship w his wife seems to be like that. Ya same.. as a Malaysian but chinese n growing up with a father who is very chinese in thinking (we call him chinaman style - his very confucius thinking but thank god he loves me a daughter n my daughter to bits, never gals are lesser) , i m not shocked with the taboo n thinking of ppl then n u r right in evey society. Because shiyi was only 15 when they met whilst he is young but still older than her w very worldly views in every sense (everytime he talks to his father anout maritime ban lifting, i reallt enjoyed his opinion, he sees so much n can be houye political friend if not born as an ou) n a past that is painful w his father treatment of his mother (so he knows how to love n cherish the one hv loves, in fact when he was wooing shiyi wo realising she is married, he was slow n steady too n never a young hot blooded lover style). Shiyi is at the being nurture stage n whoever she is with her growth will be different. Yes her nature is strong will. But her nature is also responsible, appreciative, calm n reasonable. It will work with young ou cause both are very gentle n calm ppl. Who will not fight n simply make each other unhappy. So w young ou her growth with very different. More carefree n less intense. Itvwill just a sweet and respectful relationship.bearing in mind that ppl on that era dont go get divorce because of something doesnt work. In the trailer he open an umbrella for her. So it really says something about their relationship. N their love is the type that break winds n waves together, that they will die for one another, never leave u to walk alone. The intensity is not for everyone. Tsy herself say in an interview that shiyi character biggest lost is not being able to experience the workd like she has yearn for because she still end up in that inner courtyard. But her biggest gain is also meetinv meeting houye n experience the love n warmth that she never really had before. Like u say safety n protection that he gave her that she get from her own family evwn from her mum (her mum need protection from her). I tend to think that marriage is 50% heaven will n 50% the person reaction n characters n attitude towards it. Unfortunately ou din not get that first 50% to start out. He never had the chance to grow w her. Whilst houye has to 50% n they make it work to 101%..i do feel that Houye needs a wife like shiyi n heaven is finally taking pity on this guy call xu lingyi who had done so much for his family n the people.

@Funnypeopleswim the rumour created around amber sister is she die of heartbreak because shw slept with houye during yuanniang pregnancy n yet she cant gain houye favour . Real story is yuanniang n the mother madame luo threaten her w her sister ie Amber n make her sleep w houye. Because when a lady is pregnant n not having sex w their hubby they arrange for someone under their control to help them skeep w their hubby. Yes it is sick but yuanniang did that. Tong was forced but houye did not sleep w her. N when asked why she did it, she did not explain. HouYe conclude it is yuanniang n tong scheme again much like the one yuanniang did with shiyi n qiao n how he dislike shiyi in the beginning because he concluded shiyi colluded w yuanniang to marry in the family n reduced qiao to concubine. He disliked tong n never visited her. N the bad mouthing ppl like tao mama goes around telling ppl she is shameless yet cant gain houye favour. She died in depression, committing suicide by hanging. That is why Amber turn against houye n want to get shiyi out of xu family. She was of course lead n brain washes by qin about houye heartlessness. N how pitiful her sister was. I doubt amber will be w sml. He was imprisoned at the final episode trailer. I believe he surrendered the proof of ou cohooting w pirates in order to saveshiyi n make repentance for the ous. Poor guy. Hope they can save him but it looks bleak when he says... If fate did not twist our lives, i would be the more suitable person for u than xu lingyi.. I thought it is a heartfelt statement that shows the honesty of a man about to be executed. Because he never expressed hia feelings for shiyi in front of shiyi.

Same same. Attacks from ou will come regardless of xianlingge because it is from directions. Xianlingge ia just one of the many ways. But i would ask myself if i m actually giving them that weapon to be used against me n my family. For me i dont want to keep my backdoor open for my enemy to sneak in. One backdoor is enough to keep watch. If i have 5 backdoors i will be dizzy keeping guards. Too stressful haha.... N if i still so young like shiyi n knowing my hubby is such an excellent supooetive character, i will not put myself n my family in that situation for potential attacks which has very very high stakes. Really from all the comments i read no one NONE of us want her to not have both, family n career. We all love a smart capable calm fl n it is precisely this modern thought that makes her special n caught houye attention n finally his love.. We love shiyi in her career mode. But lets be logical here.. This career of embroidery has 2 elements here. 1. the ownership of xianlingge the workshop which give her the rights to go there n make executive decisions, which aldo means financial independence 2. as a place where she can go n destress, do research in embroidery and teach n empower other women. No 2 was what she did previously n everyone including court ladies think highly of her because of it. She actually cares about no 2 more as i can see.. It is empowerment of women n passing the skills on that she always talk about . Houye basically only have one principles - supoort her where she wants 1 or 2 or both. Modern men mentality. The discussion is NOT about her ability to handle both or her rights to hv a business cum hobby because all of us support that. Are they so lazy to think of other grander nail biting scheme or are they really trying to prove to all the audiences that old madame is right all along n shiyi is dumb for being determined over a career? Why cant they play the script like houye is in danger n shiyi hold up the household n uses xianlingge (like maybe passing the message to emperor through the embroidery or something like that) to save xu n houye. Must they make her a damsel in distress again needing him to ssve her. Oh well will see how 43 to 45 is played out.

I m a working mum n there are many many instances i hv to decide whats the best for family n career. each time i need to consider my husband feelings n schedule too besides if my kid will be affected. I remembered once i wirked so late n cane home tired n slept n my daughter ran a high fever to 40 deg. My hubby was the one who noticed her temperature in time. On the way to hospital i hated myself for not waking on time n for thinking why my work was so important till rhis happen. If she end up having a terrible side effect, i doubt i will forgive myself. Actually it wasn't so bad as in angst because the husband n wife relationship was not affected by this combo of qin - amber - madame xu combo. It was more like a stressful time for them because of madame xu who was puppeted to push shiyi into a corner. And amber who is puppeted to bring shiyi out. So one push n one 'rescue'. Snake ou method is separated the husband n wife till the wife leave him. N he was clever enough to bring young ou in to help shiyi. So to create an impression of 2 men fighting over the 1 woman. 1 arrow 3 birds. So qin mission is to push shiyi away from houye n our of the house. I thought qin is the best schemer.. All the time she never say anything but says nice things n ask questions like what n who can help shiyi i wonder. Others basically arrive at the answers themselves. Such clever spy. N amber is just.... I m speechless. Since when she can decide for shiyi or anyone else for that matter what is good or bad for them. I really dislike that attitude of i know what is the best for my madame. Uh huh so clever till overstepping herself d. Glad houye kick her out. Her loyalty n honesty is not absolute. So @Yana don skip. Its just stressful n makes u want to hit amber n MadameXu for being such idiots. N u got to admire qin for such good move. Her only mistakes are she underestimate the couple tightness n shiyi understanding n trust for her two maids characters n of course young ou discernment.

@jujubei also hv to close my eyes to all the meanness so many times during the first 6 episodes. But now i cam rewatch them n understand the characters of houye n shiyi n the concubines better. N i still hate madame luo. She is one characters that no matter who says what is not going to redeem herself. In the end she still want yang to die first.. What crazy woman. Don worry.. U r very welcome here. No one is trashed for having a different views. We all love the drama so much n i personally rewatch many episodes numerous time cause so far no drama during this caught my full interest. I love the sets, costumes, ost n all the acting m directing. What i find regarding the issues of xianlingge is sloppy script. I mean please do something more interesting. Whilst we all understand why she love it the script provided rhat to us n u r right because she has a hobby n place to retreat, she cam stay true to herself n be kind n calm. Definitely agree w ur point. On the family end they sound so demanding but 2md sil n mil point is very valid. Wo u realising ppl are planting daggers there. U think u are just sewing n helping others but the daggers will slice ur throat before u even realise it is there. N basically it did happem again in the finale scheme. Its frustrating to me the script makes her look so adamant. Yet threw in that plot line of her being framed w xianlingge again. Isnt it like madame xu can say.. I told u so, if u hv listen n discharge ur shares, xianlingge n master jian will not be the target n they cant use it to implicate her... U see that final scene happen n old ou marquis can use it because his son already discharge from it.. I just find this plot a bit annoying. Is like huh xianlingge again.

Maybe it is like there are some point they dont really answer properly such as timeline (suddenly they r married for few years when first 35 episodes is like based on danyang pregnancy onky 9 months), why houye doesn't really care for yuge as much as chunge, this thing w xianlingge also don make sense if wat she wants was to teach the skillsz etc... I mean there r some sloppiness in the scriptwriting. I feel that is where the prob is. N suddenly in few episodes 2 of concubine are gone. For esp 36 onwards is rather jumpy like they r trying to wrap it up asap. But it is still one of my fav show ever for a long while.i guess for historical drama it is the much better than the ones thst i hv watched for a long while. There some historical ones that is very long, plotty n heavy like yanyuntai, rebel princess and some really romcom young ones like general lady, etc which feels very childish if not executed properly. S&b is like in between. For modern dramas the recent 2021 ones i really like my little happiness n unexpected love. Both really makes me laugh. You are my hero i enjoyed the disaster relief n how the medical n security sysyem in china are like. Very touching in a way.. As for romance seems like a n atural development n not forced.. So it is quite nice.

I thought this bit of the script is not well written. If something happen to him n she took the blame for him i think will make more sense. The framing of her w xianlingge is dumb. Cause any person with logic in that era or modern world woukd be able to tell u that keeping xianlingge just for a feel good ambition is childish n inconsiderate.. The last scene w qin is very memorable. So much emotion play out. So much suffering on her part. N no one to tell n talk to n as days passed by, she lost hope n continued to spiral down into an abyss.. She must be silently crying for help but nobody cares. We can see the hatred is clearly directed at madane xu. Which is great. From dongching incident like lingyi point out, she is using an innocent gal life to push shiyi n is thst justified. Really justified with the sweeping statenent... all is for the good of xu. Is like u can do bad for ur family good. . U can tell she gave up because all her kids are against her m she knew lingyi is the head. But w qin, she sees it as her faul. I think she finakky realised she not only hurt a human being but put xu n her son in danger. Sorry rant : I really want to ask her. Xu got 4 boys (including wuye son n jiege) d n shiyi is so young, danyang is still so young. If ur sons n dils are happy n loving w one another, procreation will ensue. u forced ur sons to sleep w different women just to sow seeds n end up no one is happy. Main wife will be too busy scheming to keep on top of things, concubine will be scheming to win the man love. How to procreate like that. I feel the men that era is treated like a baby machine too. But i hv to agree madame xu about xianlingge. To her it is against tradition n create prob for xu family. But she has a point someone will use xianlingge. Qiao used it, Qin also use it w the bamboo incident. Snake ou also use it. Why so stubborn right. Just get out for a while. We know it is true that all those schemes root from the fact ppl want to get rid of houye n xu n shiyi is basically implicated because of it. Even as a modern woman, i would say if my husband is in such important political position, i will not go own a business so outright. It will be used against them. Conflict of interest does not necessary be real. If u are seem to be hsving that interest it is not good d. If her priority is houye n xu family, then just discharge her share holding from xianlingge but she still can visit n teach there. Houye def will support her teaching because he is sypoortive n open minded. So many times ppl r using xianlingge to bring her down to bring hiuye down. N this finale ep it is still xianlingge. N all this time it affects n endangers master jian too. Teaching n passing knowledge is her motive but it does not mean she need own xianlingge.. So i thought it is weird script to play xianlingge like that.

Ya after those episodes, i don she deserve him. She is smart but too illogical n unstable when it comes to her weak link. If someone touch her soft spot she can drop her loyalty n integrity n those that is dear to her.

Haha i cut her a slack though. She din betray but with her think she knows better style almost got shiyi n houye n ou to be killed. N cause shiyi n dongching too much heartache. I hate the way she coldly used dongching. Considering how close they all are. But honestly anyone like young ou like me. Even though he loves shiyi, he actually never purpose took advantage of any situations they r in any way. He is the kind that just do what is right. One thing i hv to applaud the relationship between houye n shiyi is if u noticed. They not only trust each other. They trust each other ability n discernment. She discerned yiung ou is a guy w integrity n told houye. N houye even uncomfortable with young ou he trust his wife discernment n went ahead to trust young ou. It is a very broadminded n confident person to be able to do that. N luckily they did trust yiung ou. He din disappointed them. Hopefully he will be the next marquis of jingyuan.
