Some K-drama male leads may look cold and distant at the beginning, but once they fall in love, they immediately change 180 degrees and cannot get any cuter. Let’s take a look at 5 examples of this character trope in recent K-dramas. Yi San (The Red Sleeve) https://cdn.kbizoom.com/media/2021/12/10093106/Yi-San-The-Red-Sleeve-101221.jpg The Red Sleeve is getting positive results thanks to its engrossing and unique storyline. The male lead, Crown Prince Yi San (Lee Jun Ho) is aloof, arrogant and often acts cold towards people around him. But after falling in love, he completely changes. He even becomes a bit silly, holding a book upside down when reading, eavesdropping on the court ladies’ conversation. When he finds out that the girl he has feelings for also likes him, he is beyond happy but still pretending to be calm and collected. 4. I so agree, Deok-Im's Words of "I told you I would protect you" has s much more layer of love than words "i love you" can ever mean in their context. I remember when San First heard that words from DeokIm, at the end of Episode 5 of protecting him. And his question and expression, was the same as me. Like for real DeokIm a court Lady will protect him...? Him being a man in the joseon era and the crown prince.... But Time and time again, she has proven it. She will protect him and that has been just beautiful to see and also refreshing to see, in the saguek world where in the ML is the hero and FL is the damsel in distress, he we have a FL who is the is like a guardian angel of San... and this post/article really emphasized that (I wish it were translated) Also of note for drama narrative, is the part when Di said, "Your highness is always protecting this kingdom. And I’m busy protecting your highness. Who do you think is the busier one”. I emphasized the type of relationship this two have. They started as friends and you can see that beat continue here, even in the face of the danger (San and Taeho did a bit also) or the aftermath. I don't give much credit with the writer, but this right her is due to the writer. The strength the the story telling allows us to accept that is what is suppose to happen, that spurt of comedy. The writing has weaved a web of the relationship between DI and San to be this light even in the face of all things chaotic.... Also I did not notice about the symbolism of the house that DeokIm made vs the one bokyeon made ...it really is interesting how very different their views are. DI has simple goals for herself but has high hopes for San. 4 Key Points To Look Forward To In The 2nd Half Of “The Red Sleeve” Dec 12, 2021 | by J. Ahn MBC’s hit drama “The Red Sleeve” has entered the second half of its run! “The Red Sleeve” is a historical drama about the imperial romance between crown prince Yi San (played by 2PM’s Lee Junho) and the strong-willed court lady Seong Deok Im (played by Lee Se Young). Here are four key points to look forward to in the upcoming episodes: SPOILERS 1. Yi San’s obstacle-ridden rise to the throne The succession of power has become a hot topic as King Yeongjo (played by Lee Deok Hwa) struggles with dementia. With the opposition setting their sights on taking down Yi San, the conflict over the throne has been raising the tension in the palace. Viewers will also be able to look forward to watching Yi San and Seong Deok Im working together to overcome all sorts of obstacles and moments of crisis. 2. Yi San as king and his desire to achieve what he wants Yi San has always placed his goal of becoming king as his top priority. He has restrained himself from doing the things he wanted, including resisting the desire to become closer to Seong Deok Im. In the second half of the drama, Yi San will no longer need to hide this desire, and he will do everything he can do keep Seong Deok Im by his side. As king, Yi San will pursue Seong Deok Im as a man with a burning desire, raising anticipation for the story of their long-awaited romance. 3. The second rejection As Seong Deok Im is known to be the court lady who rejected the king twice, the question of how Seong Deok Im will reject Yi San again will resurface. The changes in Seong Deok Im’s feelings will touch viewers’ hearts as her emotions sway with Yi San’s every word and action. The second half of the drama will touch upon the question of “Did the court lady love the king?” 4. Hong Deok Ro and his lust for power Viewers can look forward to seeing how Hong Deok Ro (played by Kang Hoon)’s story will end as he attempts to attain power by placing his sister as Yi San’s concubine. Hong Deok Ro constantly keeps tabs on Yi San’s affection towards Seong Deok Im, and he crosses the line to achieve his desires and even violates orders from Yi San. Curiosity is mounting over how his relationship with Yi San will turn out when the latter becomes king. Commenting on the second half of the drama as well as the decision to extend the drama by one episode, Lee Junho said, “I will do my best until the end to repay the viewers for supporting us. Thank you so much for all the love you’ve been showing us.” Lee Se Young added, “I’d like to thank the viewers once again for all the love and support.” The production staff also remarked, “We have a wide variety of stories prepared for the second half of the drama, including the romance between [Yi San and Seong Deok Im]. Please look forward to the second half of the ‘The Red Sleeve,’ which will feature even more dynamic storytelling and an explosive romance.” “The Red Sleeve” airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m. KST. Cha tvN’s “Happiness” went out on a high note! On December 11, the popular apocalyptic thriller starring Park Hyung Sik and Han Hyo Joo ended on the highest viewership ratings of its entire run. According to Nielsen Korea, the series finale of “Happiness” scored an average nationwide rating of 4.2 percent, marking a new personal record for the show. Not only did “Happiness” take first place in its time slot across all cable channels, but it also took first place across all channels—including public broadcast networks—among the key demographic of viewers ages 20 to 49, with whom it scored a nationwide average of 2.6 percent. Meanwhile, MBC’s “The Red Sleeve” continued its impressive streak at the top of its own time slot, earning a nationwide average of 10.2 percent for its latest episode. SBS’s “Now We Are Breaking Up” also remained relatively stable with an average nationwide rating of 6.8 percent for the night. With just one episode left in its run, tvN’s “Jirisan” heads into its series finale at first place in its time slot across all cable channels. The mystery thriller starring Jun Ji Hyun and Joo Ji Hoon scored an average nationwide rating of 7.6 percent for its penultimate episode. “Jirisan” also took first place in its time slot across all channels (including public broadcast networks) among viewers ages 20 to 49, with whom it earned a nationwide average of 3.6 percent. Additionally, two new dramas premiered to promising starts last night: TV Chosun’s new remake of BBC’s hit series “Uncle” kicked off with an average nationwide rating of 2.4 percent, while KBS’s new historical drama “The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won” started strong with an average nationwide rating of 8.7 percent. JTBC’s “Inspector Koo” dipped to an average nationwide rating of 1.5 percent for its latest episode, while OCN’s “Chimera” fell to a nationwide average of 1.2 percent. Finally, KBS 2TV’s “Young Lady and Gentleman” maintained its position as the most-watched program to air on any channel on Saturday with an average nationwide rating of 29.5 percent. Are you sad to see “Happiness” come to an end? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below! LINK: https://www.soompi.com/article/1503299wpp/happiness-ends-on-its-highest-ratings-yet-the-red-sleeve-continues-to-dominate-its-time-slot ...To take note of, KBS just aired a traditional saguek and its airing time overlaps with TRS, and its ratings are quite promising at 8%. and that amidst all the airing dramas and finale of tvN's Happiness... Same with "uncle" which is airing in TV chosun. Next week there will also be premiers of a few dramas... So I do wonder how the ratings will shake up. Will TRS stay stagnant at 10% or will it increase and hit their ratings promise at 15%? Plot wise, it has become politics heavy, which is understandable given that San's ascension is very much important plot device for tension as well as overall narrative and history. But I do wonder if they will have the Sandeok couple be separated for most of this conflict....
  5. The Red Sleeve, Ep. 1-8: A Deep Dive into Palace Politics & The Lives of Court Ladies December 8, 2021 | Anna | SEOULBEATS As MBC‘s first sageuk in 14 years, there were a lot of expectations riding on The Red Sleeve, which its first half meets with flourish. Promoted as a “traditional sageuk”, The Red Sleeve stands out amidst the sea of currently airing sageuks for its adherence to historical context, its tight storytelling and its subversion of typical sageuk norms. Thankfully, the general public seems to think the same, and its ratings have been rising steadily with each week. Based on Kang Mi-kang‘s novel of the same name, the drama depicts the story of Crown Prince Yi San (later King Jeongjo) and his personal court lady, Sung Deok-im (later Sung Uibin), played by 2PM‘s Junho and Lee Se-young respectively. While their romance is a significant part of the drama, and this couple definitely has sizzling chemistry, The Red Sleeve takes great efforts to develop all of its characters individually, giving them personalities and complexities that make them feel like real people. Cho “The Red Sleeve” has shared a cute making-of clip for episodes 7 and 8! The MBC historical drama is about the imperial romance between crown prince Yi San (Lee Junho), who becomes emperor, and the strong-willed court lady Seong Deok Im (Lee Se Young). The video starts with Lee Junho checking Lee Se Young’s forehead temperature. The director exclaims, “The angle [from the camera] looks like you should kiss!” Lee Se Young quickly asks, “What?” Someone then explains with a giggle, “They said you should kiss,” and the actors professionally dive right in. Later, Lee Junho crouches out of sight to make a natural entrance into the scene. However, he comes in very abruptly, and Lee Se Young quietly asks, “You’re coming in like this?” causing the director to burst into laughter. At night, Lee Se Young begins filming with Yang Byung Yeol, who plays her brother Sung Sik. As she approaches him, she starts laughing, causing him to ask, “Why? Why?” Lee Se Young explains, “It’s like looking in a mirror,” commenting on their similar facial features. As this was his first time filming, Yang Byung Yeol comments, “I was able to show what I prepared because everyone treated me comfortably. I was shocked because [Lee Se Young and I] looked so similar.” In the next scene, Lee Se Young is gathered with her fellow court ladies where she tells them she likes the crown prince, making them giggle like kids. As they excitedly film the scene and play a wide variety of games, Junho watches from overhead with Oh Dae Hwan. The two film the following scene and Junho struggles to hold in his laughter as a staff member comments, “He was holding in [his laughter] from the start.” Lee Se Young and Junho then film a serious scene where they diligently work with the director throughout rehearsals to get all the details right. After they popcorn many ideas and discuss with the director, the two actors professionally perfect the serious scene then go right back to their usual adorable antics. Park Ji Young, who plays Head Court Lady Jo, makes her return to set and announces that it has been around 20 days since she last filmed. As she films with the young cast members and praises them, Lee Se Young jokes from the side, “She’s scary even when she’s saying ‘Good job.'” Next, Lee Se Young and Junho find themselves in front of Lee Deok Hwa, who plays King Young Jo. As the pair rehearse when and how they should make eye contact, Lee Deok Hwa draws laughter as he comments, “You’re only forgiven because it’s a drama. Am I dumb? You’re making eye contact and laughing like that.” At the end, Lee Se Young must shed tears out of relief and the staff members laugh, saying that she’s crying a little too much for the scene. “The Red Sleeve” airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m. KST!
