I read somewhere that the main reason that San in the drama is more likeable is mainly because they've allowed his POV in the drama. While compared to the book it was mainly DeokIm, her life and her surrounding and San's pursuit and the court/harem politics that seemed like DI was exposed but was not protected much from. I guess as a drama, it would have been hard to root for a romance if San was less empathetic. Gawd I really really wish we have a translation of the novel.
