  1. I'm fully caught up.

I have to admit...the couple are super sweet together. My only disappointment so far is SR leaving to the exile hotel without telling GW as he was worried about her. It may be her need to clear her head about what GW's father said and if she thought she and GW can overcome the expectations that they're ill fated just like GW's parents. We'll see...

The father's core doesn't seem all that bad. Just maybe he prioritizes his company over family, even love. If the information the evil sister fed to the media is true about GW's parents, they were married, but divorced for reasons unknown yet.

The evil sister is ice cold. So sad to see the way she treats her son so distantly. You would think because she was neglected by her father, she would be the opposite to her son. Good thing he has a good relationship with GW. Uncle and nephew are adorable together. Back to the sister, she only wants the hotel because GW wants it so she will stop at nothing to get it. The reason makes her look pathetic. Unfortunate she is misdirecting her issues at GW.

I'm relieved Mr. No wasn't bought out by the evil sister and remains loyal to GW. (Though I'm guilty of questioning him as the informant for a quick moment. LOL.)

I'm not a fan of the friend's husband at all, but I know when there are children involved in marital matters, it's not easy to up and leave. He better do a complete 180 in changing to be a better husband and father.

GW returns and finds his SR missing . He finds out what happened to her and just as he was heading out to look for her, his mum comes to KTL to look for him and the episode ends. From preview, GW is gonna propose to SR. Mum talks to father and evil sister is not done yet.

I'm not fully caught up yet, but I'm excited to know GW's mother finally appears. I've been looking forward to this moment. (I peeked at the preview. I like the actress playing his mom. She was actually his previous co-lead in drama, Confessions. I also loved her in Chimera.)

But really, I'm curious to know why she left the father and especially GW. GW's feelings are valid as to why a mother would abandon her son. Also, the father seems to miss his mother based on how he was reminiscing about her and her "happy" hotel project idea. (This was right after the 100th anniversary ceremony.) This shot seems to allude her name is Han Mi So and was part of the hotel's strategic planning team.

Anyway, I finished up to episode 12. I do think the storyline got better after the Thailand trip. That was SO LONG. Also, I didn't think the couple trying to hide their relationship from their friends all through that time was funny. So, it was comical when the friends walked in on them during their intimate moment at Sa Rang's house. I actually laughed out loud because I wasn't expecting that to happen. LOL.

As for the 6th item, it would only have been required if Hyangi latched on to a human, which she ultimately did with Sanyeong.

Gosh, maybe I had it wrong all this time, but I thought Hyangi’s spirit started latching onto humans starting with Hae Sang’s grandfather and so on. This was why when the spirit got to SY’s father, he would’ve needed the 6th item by then as well.

With SY, when Hae Sang first met her, he saw and told her that the spirit had latched onto her. What happened when Hae Sang and Hong Sae found Hyangi’s remains and missing hairpin was a full take over of SY (beyond latching at this point).

  4. It's Sunday where I am and happen to have some time to go back through episodes.

Here is the flashback of the part where the shaman explained to the evil grandmother that if the spirit (Hyangi) was to latch onto a human, she must get rid of the host. The additional item was the finger.

Were the five objects ever the required objects to get rid of Hyang Gi or it's used to seal her only? Or the five objects were meant to help her possess the host body? The note given to Halmoni by the Shaman was not translated so was it just capturing information about her name and the five objects? What's so special about the finger if they have her whole body anyway, which was taken away by NFS! I'd think under the circumstances that her body had been disposed of in 1958, then it'd mean be more logical the remaining finger of hers is the only way to get rid of her completely.

    8 hours ago, 40somethingahjumma said:

Ordinarily five objects and a name would be enough (I think) to exorcise the spirit but according to the shaman Hyangi was a particularly "tenacious" juvenile ghost so her finger was also needed on top of everything else as a precautionary measure. It was that extra thing that was needed to get rid of her if things got out of hand. I imagine the show is reinforcing Hyangi's inhuman will to live in this case and her resentment at being born poor and being used as a sacrifice to prosper the village. I don't think normal logic applies here because these are rules of the "magic" of this universe. It has to be the finger. Recovery of the remains apparently leads to a different result ie. the ghost being able to take full control of the host.

It was stated over and over that San-yeong's dad, had all the objects sealed (as according to the ritual) but there was something missing.

This is the way I understood it... Yes. Normally, the 5 objects and name would have been enough the dispel the spirit, but because of Hyangi's unique tenacity, she had the ability to latch onto the host which was a different trait from the other spirits. So, to get rid of Hyangi specifically, one had to also get rid of the host. As such, the severed finger was the anomaly to the normal instructions of the 5 objects and name. I believe technically, someone other the host burning the severed finger would have killed both SY and Hyangi together, but because SY (as the host) found the will to fight back and courageously burn it herself, she found the loophole in dispelling Hyangi and saving herself.

SY's father had all 5 objects, but I do not believe he had the correct name. He thought the evil spirit was Mokdan. Also, he did not know about severed finger as the 6th item.

It was nice that this part was included. Sanyeong's life was miserable at the start of the drama, even without an evil spirit, those circumstances could have led her to depression and suicide. Aside from finances, part of it I feel is caused by her mother, who was a burden to her. I've never felt a caregiver has to take care of a mentally ill person at her own expense, so I am glad to see that San Yeong recognised that she had to take care of herself too. (I wanted to clap when Hyangi called her mother "whiny"! 😂 From the start to the end, I find her the most unlikeable character.)

I thought this part had a powerful and meaningful message. A lot of times, we are our own worst enemies, even demons. So, I think the final showdown between SY and Hyangi also represents our fight against the worst side of our self. For SY, she finally confronted all the dislikes she has had about herself and shedding them off in order to live her best life instead. I loved that it was not Hae Sang or Hong Sae who saved her, but that she fought and saved her own self.

This was not me. Was it @peperomia?

It was not originally me. Just thought I would try to answer the question whether the young art teacher was the same one killed later, Shin Seung Joo. I believe he was. His nephew was not able to locate the artbook, but he provided the yearbook instead.

Overall, I thought there were some inconsistencies and questions left unanswered as well, but I am not troubled by them in the end. Loved the story from start to finish. I am going to miss it and our leads. I hope Oh Jung Se and Kim Tae Ri pair up in another project together. Both were excellent here!

Ep11 shows us who the evil spirit is and how she became one. After knowing Lee Mok Dan's story, one would think that Lee Hyangi's story would be similarly sympathetic, but surprisingly not. She was a greedy and selfish girl from the start, even if she did regret later.

Agree and I thought these characteristics of her when she was human tied into her evil spirit perfectly. It was consistent. After the ritual, the shaman immediately sensed she was different from the other ghosts which is why she left the instructions on how to dispel the evil spirit with the evil grandmother. (This was explained in the last episode.)

Yes, she (Shim Dal Gi) played the younger version of Jung Eun Hui in Our Blues. She was great there too. For those who watched Hospital Playlist, she also had a small part there as well. She played a teen mom of Dr. Jun Wan's baby patient. I think she has a lot potential. Very talented. Here, she only appeared in the last 2 episodes and made such an impact to the overall story.

Yes, I looked up the guest actor in episode 11 and he is the school art teacher, Shin Seung Joo. I believe his nephew provided the 1959 yearbook which still puzzles me. I do not understand why the emphasis on the year 1959 when Hyangi died he same year as Mokdan,1958.

Off topic, but I started Longing for You. Title is a bit misleading, but it is a mystery, prosecution/detective storyline with some humor and I think...hints of romance. LOL. I noticed there is no thread for it here, but based on the first episode, it has potential. I like the female lead. She is a spunky prosecutor.

  7. I watched the final episode. I will wait until everyone here has a chance to watch before spilling any of the supernatural details of how we got to the end. I am curious if you all thought most things got explained and tied up.

All in all though, I thought the writer delivered a positive message at the end of a dark and gripping story.

    Spoilers ahead...

    Spoiler

At the close, Hae Sang shares a special place with San Yeong – the annual grand purification ceremony by the beach, where of many things, it escorts lost and wandering ghosts to a good place brought on by everyone’s wishes. He would come here when it was too painful to see the ghosts because on this rare occasion, he can see them happy.

    spacer.png

    spacer.png

    spacer.png

SY who can still see ghosts can see that they do look happy here in this moment.

For HS' wish, he prays everyone’s wishes comes true. He hopes everyone here finds happiness (which I am certain includes the spirits and the writer means to extend this wish to us viewers as well).

    spacer.png

    spacer.png

    spacer.png

After witnessing this moment, SY goes blind at the ceremony. The fireworks turn into darkness. However, she is not afraid, but accepts it and says to herself that she will strive to survive.

    spacer.png

Although unfortunate, I think SY eventually going blind was appropriate for the ending. Unlike her father and others who gave into their weaknesses and made deals with the ghost, she courageously fought it. Shortcuts and the easy-way ins/outs in life always comes with costs. She was not willing to sacrifice any for the sake of keeping her vision intact. I like that in the end, she is at peace with everything - the good and bad - she will accept them.

  8. I've been meaning to go back to find the shot of the 5 items found by the detectives on the shaman's altar back in 1958 (episode 7, ~17:00 mark).

    1. glass bottle with red powder in it

    2. broken pottery piece

    3. hair ribbon piece

    4. jade hairpin (not found yet)

    5. black cord/rope

Whether the jade hairpin is indeed the 5th and last item, we shall see. There could be another twist. LOL.

Yes! Looks like the evil grandmother is wearing the jade hairpin (last item) as the pendant of her necklace.

So uh...I need to retract my thought on this. It's not the jade hairpin on her necklace. In a better shot of the photo, the pendant is just some metallic strands. LOL. Sorry, guys. I do believe the last item is supposed to be a jade hairpin, but @ktcjdrama could be right that the necklace may play a part later.

Could she be the ghost's mom? Based on the still on the bottom right of the Twitter post, it looks like San Young is the ghost in that moment and seems friendly/docile to her. I don't vibes of the "evil spirit" persona, but more of who she probably was as a human before she died. Just a guess...

How does Gu Sang Mo know taking on the spirit will heal his eyes?

The ghost supposedly knows each host's weakness so I believe she may have told him that she could preserve his eyesight (just like she told San Young she could preserve her eyesight which San Young felt the difference with and without her attached). The trade-off seems to work in keeping the host from fighting-off the possession.

  11. It seems the ghost is urging the duo to find all 5 objects, but she is preventing them from figuring out her identity. Most of her kills are people who have information about her (the school art teacher, librarian, Detective Seo). San Young said she notices she is losing herself as she touches each object they uncover. They have found 4 out of 5. So, I am thinking it’s possible if all 5 objects are uncovered (with the last one being the jade hair pin), but not the ghost’s real name, she might be able to completely take over San Young. This may be her end goal/motive. Her ushering them to find the 5 objects might be a trap. It is only if they uncover the 5 objects and her real name would they succeed in banishing her. I find it odd she is only stopping the latter. Anyway, just a thought while we brace for the finale…

What do you think? Is this Sanyeong or the ghost? Is Lee Hyangi the real name?

I read an interesting theory on MDL that the evil spirit could be the grandmother's younger sister. This is based on her tone when she referred to SY as Hyangi. She addressed her as if they are close like family. Also, it follows the belief that the second-born is sacrificed to protect the first born. If we assume her given name is Hyangi, it's possible her family name may not be Lee (like Mokdan), but something else.

I think it was SY and the grandmother was aware she is pretending to be the ghost. That is my guess.

You are spot on about this! I do think this is why the ratings are high.

I was curious and skimmed the comment section on MDL and it’s quite interesting, even comical. There is one camp complaining about it still having no plot development and the second camp defending this is romcom so why should we expect a plotline. Not sure what to think here. LOL. Probably just depends on what one is looking for. (Oh, and I did notice one of the MDL tags is "steamy kiss" so there...LOL.)

  14. I started this for Oh Jung Se! Overall, I think the premise of the story is decent. It is the characters and their connections to one another that keep me invested one episode after the next. For example, I could easily understand the reasons that drive Hae Sang and San Young to pursue to evil spirit – which both are tied to the loss of a parent – his mother and her father. With SY, I find her journey in getting to know who her father was interesting. Even when her mother opposed, she proclaimed that she must as she is half of him too. I like how each revelation of who he was brings her closer to him, even after his death. With HS, you can really feel his loneliness so when he lost his only companions - Detective Seo and Woo Jin, one could also easily feel his pain and heartbreak. Thankfully, SY and HS form a connection as well. The part where he wanted to give up on his life due to guilt, but she would not let him, was a moving point in the story. In experiencing the darkness herself, she was able to understand and sympathize with him. So, for me, the “horror” stuff is not what stands out in the story, it is the human nature aspect of it.

Regarding the evil spirit, I am curious to know what her motive is. Is it simply revenge or insatiable greed like Hae Sang’s grandmother? A part of me hopes it is more than that. That maybe her actions thus far have been driving SY and HS to uncover the truth behind her death and most importantly – her identity. However, the others’ deaths are supposedly caused by her so not sure how likely this is. Nevertheless, the final reveal this week should be riveting...I am excited for this yet sad that it is ending.

  15. Hi ladies!~ I hope you all have been well. I am mainly watching for Jun Ho. I read that he and Yoona signed up for this because they wanted to work on a lighter project, but I am surprised by how the plotline is almost nonexistent. Good to know SK viewers are enjoying it though. Now that the show has reached its midpoint, I hope Gu Won's family storyline will pick up. I want to know more about his mom. It would be fantastic if she shows up and shakes things up.

I definitely needed those tissues. I was in tears throughout the episode.

What won the case  was love. Not only the love of Shin Sung Han, but that too of his grandma and father. Based on technicalities alone, SSH was clearly not going to have GY's custody. Grandma revealing to her son what her present DIL said to Ju Hwa was the deal breaker .  I am glad that the father finally did the right thing and came clean with what happened to his divorce with Ju Hwa then. It shows he loves his son too , and can see that GY living with Shin would be in the boy's best interest. Having Shin raise GY but still having visitation rights is a win-win, and GY no longer has to live in a toxic environment with his stepmum.

The show gave a lovely wrap-up for everyone. Our new Attorney Choi has the makings of a great lawyer, capable of thinking out of the box. How happy was he to get that backhanded compliment from his idol, Att Shin. Seo Jin finally overcame her trauma, stood up against her haters , and went back to do what she loves best - radio. Our love birds - Jang and noodle shop lady are taking their relationship to the next level going on a trip together to Europe. I am also glad that GY's grandma is getting a divorce but this time for herself, and not as a sacrifice for GY's sake. Even our silly but most endearing Jeong Sik has shown growth in the show, selling off his most priced possession  - his beloved car so that he could convince laywer Park to testify the truth.

Overall, this show is such a warm and satisfying watch - a drama that moved me to tears in a number of episodes but yet was able to make me smile and laugh throughout. And through all the characters' growth and changes, the one wonderful constant is the amazing love and friendship between these 3. I could easily watch them in another season.

Wow @abs-oluteM, you summarized everything that I loved about the finale. To be completely honest though, I wanted the stepmom to have more consequences for her actions, but at the end of the day, what's important is the good and positives. SSH succeeded in gaining guardianship of Gi Yeong and we can see they are happy. And, Gi Yeong's father will remain a part of his life. The custody case ended cordially for the sake of Gi Yeong so that's all that really matters.

It was perfect to close with the 3 friends just being their usual selves. It was funny when SSH said they need to get a divorce from each other or they'll be screwed, but ended up saying they love each other. LOL. I will miss them!

Not sure what I'll be watching next, but I understand Dr. Romantic 3 will be airing at the end of this month. I may pop in for this.

  17. My favorite episode so far. I should have known that since the close of last week’s episode left me teary-eyed, the opening of this episode would too. Such a touching moment between Shin and Gi Yeong. Shin is a natural as an uncle and potential guardian. He did a great job conveying to Gi Yeong that he basically needs to "endure" home a little longer while he figures out a way to "free" him. Anyway, I like where the story is heading for the ending. There is more meaning behind Gi Yeong’s grandmother’s pursuit for divorce and how Shin became an attorney for a good reason.

Before Seo Jin's son told her how much he loved being out with her, SSH had encouraged her to stay strong for Hyeon U when things got tough. To have her son say those words to her shortly after must be motivating for her to overcome the trauma.

Gi Yeong is a strong kid. All these years of staying silent and being obedient, he's finally standing up for himself. I am curious to know what else he has to say in the coming episodes. Nevertheless, I know his uncle and grandma will fight hard for him.

Yes! This flashback of how they first met on the bus was funny and in a way, a bit of foreshadowing. As adults now, Joon Kyung is fighting back against the big baddies and Eun Yong is joining beside her once again. The umbrella scene of them reuniting in the rain was nice!

I typically like mystery as part of a story, but this one appears it'll be straightforward. For example, although Joon Kyung's mother's death was ruled as a suicide, it has to be murder. Joon Kyung and Eun Yong seem sure that it was.

Tae Chun aspires to join the Special Investigations Team. I just hope he doesn't fall for any of Chief Hwang's traps.

  20. @Chocolate @twink_twink_ I'm so stoked this show is on Prime Video!:eeeee:

So far, I've caught the first episode and let's say I'm hooked already. I like how the characters, both the good and bad, are somehow connected to one another, which should make the revenge story all the more interesting.

I find Eun Yong and Tae Chun's uncle/nephew relationship super endearing. I love how tenacious Tae Chun is as a prosecutor. (He reminds me a bit of Shi Mok from Forest of Secrets. Passionate and always digging deep into the cases.)

So, Eun Yong is very close to Moon Chae Won's character too and their quest for revenge seems to be related to her mom's death. I'm looking forward to knowing their backstory. The flashbacks were a little difficult to follow at first, but I think I'm getting the hang of it.

Will try to catch episode 2 tonight.

  21. Not going to lie, I was bewildered by how much people dislike the ending, but then…I read a poll on this dissatisfaction is about 70% of viewers so it means I'm the one in the minority. LOL. That’s okay because I loved this drama throughout and I’m glad the end didn’t change it, at least for me.

Honestly, it would’ve been fine for me if the story ended with Hyun Woo remaining as Do Jun or return as himself. However, when the story did a parallel of Do Jun and Hyun Woo’s different worlds at the end of ep 14, I had an inkling that the story may circle back to Hyun Woo in the end. Do Jun spoke about the fate of being born rich versus being born into poverty. I liked that he was able to return as Hyun Woo and bridge these differences in classes. He’s no longer part of the conglomerate family (which he said he didn’t want) and is able to enjoy a better life as himself, with his real family. (I mean, I can’t imagine not being able to be reunited with my loved ones.)

Do Jun dying wasn’t a shocker to me. His death couldn’t be changed just like Hyun Woo’s mother’s. He knew that. I wasn’t sad either because from my perspective, it was always Hyun Woo living as Do Jun. Most of his actions had influences of Hyun Woo. For example, when Miracle offered to help grandpa acquire Ahjin Motors, it was under his condition that SY must retain the employees. He kept his father’s hardships (and those alike) in mind. He also treated assistants as servants with respect, most notably Assistant Ha, because he was one of them too. (This is not to say that the real Do Jun couldn't have acted in the same manner as well.)

Do Jun’s mission to acquire SY was not stemmed by greed nor money, but Hyun Woo wanting to avenge for himself. This was the sole reason why he embraced being “reborn” as Do Jun. Then, it evolved to him wanting to protect SY's legacy. Yes, he died before officially winning management rights, but he did succeed in becoming the largest shareholder. Hence, he ultimately proved to grandpa (and himself) that he would own SY. Since Do Jun was able to tell grandpa of his success on his death anniversary and pay his last respects to him before he died, that was enough for me. If grandpa was still alive at this point, then yes, I would’ve been upset. With grandpa being already gone, I didn’t feel Do Jun had any further attachments to this lifetime. Unfinished business was SY’s managements which Hyun Woo completed for him.

While I understand why many weren’t fond of the ending, it was a happy one to me. Both Do Jun and Hyun Woo are still intact as one person in the present time. The important elements are still there. He is running SY with CEO Oh at Miracle. His relationship with Min Yeong is positive. He is reunited with his family and living a better life. I have no complaints.

I won't disagree there were plot-holes in the finale. Whether they were for conveniences or not, that could be said about some aspects of the story in between as well. Many things happened too easily for the benefit of Do Jun’s successes throughout that life as well. Nevertheless, while Hyun Woo was able to use his knowledge of the future to win some as Do Jun, I thought there was some balance in that Hyun Woo was able to use his knowledge as Do Jun to tie up loose ends in the present.

I was actually going to pass on this drama because I’m wary about fantasy. The ending usually bites. I’m glad I didn’t let this one go by. One of two of the best K-dramas for me in 2022 ------ Through the Darkness and Reborn Rich.

  22. Just finished Christmas Day festivities and I had to come back to mention a few more things that I liked about the finale:

Gotta love CEO Oh. After 20 years, he left Do Jun’s desk at Miracle untouched, with his name plate still intact. It’s as if it was meant to be that Jin Do Jun would return to Miracle one day. Since Hyun Woo is basically a blend of Do Jun as well now, I think it could be said that he is back to his rightful place. It was nice that I couldn’t really detect any difference in the rapport between Hyun Woo and CEO Oh. It’s essentially the same. Love that they're running SY together (as they had originally planned).

Min Yeong. I can’t imagine her heartbreak from losing Do Jun. Just when they were about to make-up, he dies. 20 years is a long time to mourn so I was glad she was finally able to drop her black attire and wear color again...to live and feel life again. For Hyun Woo, it can’t be easy for him to restrain his feelings for her. I liked the ending did not push the romance between them as well, but delicately left it open that maybe one day there could be a second chance for something in this lifetime and letting this possibility happen naturally. I didn't care for the romance throughout the story, but the subtlety at the end worked for me.

Family is everything to me. So, most importantly, I loved that through Do Jun’s life, he was able to gain a perspective of his father’s hardships. Through a better understanding of this, he was able repair his relationship with him. I think it’s more satisfying that he was able achieve justice for himself/Do Jun and obtain SY’s management rights as Hyun Woo because it’s a bonus that he is able to provide a better life for his family now.

Some people have concluded that he looks the same only to us viewers. For convenient story-telling sake. That the two of them do not look the same at all for the other characters in the drama.

Thanks for mentioning this here because this is how I've been interpreting the two looking alike as well.
