Plot & Theory

His people and his surroundings

To begin with, his name is Yoon Jong Woo, he is a country boy who has the aspiration of being a writer. So throughout the series you will see him typing away on the computer (so as of I lol) He writes about stories that are relatively dark in nature about burying bodies and what not. The only way for him to have his dream fulfilled is to get himself to Seoul, which is one of the worst mistake that he could have never imagined.

He starts off easy, by getting himself to Seoul and finding himself a Goshiwon.

"Summarising what Goshiwon is, it is a very small room that people can get to stay/study. The room is attractive to students or people who doesn't have much money because it is very cheap compared to actual houses and it doesn't require a key money which is a lump some of money before putting down the rent money. The down side is that the room is very small, and that sometimes, you can't even put your luggage in. (Because it is just that small) You are to share things with the people who are also staying in that goshiwon..(So your private times are totally off too)."

He started searching for goshiwons after goshiwons, but every one of them turns out to be very expensive, his facial expression when the landlady states the prices shows that he is very poor and would try to save money on that. As he eats a kimbap, with his luggage beside him, he noticed a goshiwon that is very cheap in rent (About 250 won a night, you can check your area and figure out how much it is) It is so cheap that is unbelievable but because he has no where to go, so he thought he should give it a try.

Right of the begin, he enters and meet the landlady, he should have known that this place is not only just dirty, but it's suspicious looking as well...But he failed to do so. Slowly as he gets to meet the neighbours that he is having, red sirens are ringing. This is the second chance for him to leave, but he didn't.

A little rundown of who he is meeting, calling them by nicknames:

  • The landlady with curly hair, so bright of a smile that seems really suspicious.
  • The pervert who has a lot of female pictures with minimal clothing pasted on the walls, he is the most red flag of them all.
  • The twins , one of them is normal but the other is the laughing twin, who whatever it is will laugh as he tries to talk. The both of them did do some suspicious things as well.
  • The bag guy..(No puns intended) he is the guy who carries a tool bag around, and would often smile suspiciously. (He only appears for like two episodes)
  • The dentist...Now this..This is the main highlight. He is the one who from the outside, he seem normal, but on the inside, he is the big baddd wolf.

(I will be using their nicknames to state who they are)

They are the ones who would torture Jong Woo mentally/emotionally and Physically, which I would not describe so that you can watch it yourself. :)

Anyways...here is the thing, to be frank, Jong Woo have friends..Like his friend who works in a company and brought him in to his company so that Jong Woo can have a stable income. His girlfriend as well whom is there with him all the way. There is another Lady cop who is there to sort of investigate the suspicious activity. Ultimately, with all of them there, (I would personally say it....But they are all not grateful of him at all). This reasoning takes flight on episode 10 when all of the people around him are asked to testify about Jong Woo. All of them simply ram him under the bus...(That is when the 'Hell is other people' really take flight on this one)

The rest of things that he has to go through, you can take a look and you will see the changes that Jong Woo have to go through. :)

Highlight & Theory

Highlight an item that really made me go like "Wow..This is deep. I am probably thinking too much, but it really opened my eyes to something unique."

One of the episode, had Jong Woo and The Dentist sat in the kitchen as they chat and have meat. Specifically 육회 (Yukhoe) which is marinated raw beef. They were chatting and the Dentist stated "Try this, It's delicious."..."The landlady made this. Try it." *light are flickering* Pretty much the dentist is pushing Jong Woo to eat more of the 육회, suggesting different parts of the beef as well. Jong Woo didn't want it because he just saw a dead cat a few moments ago....the meat...It doesn't taste right to him after. The dentist watch Jong Woo intently as he place a piece of raw meat in his mouth. The light flicker again and the dentist face changes, giving Jong Woo an evil grin. Then it returns to normal again. "Why are you so started?" The dentist states... "You think this is human meat or something?" he adds after. While all this time, Jong Woo have been weirded out and asking if they can just have beer...After Jong Woo left, The Dentist stated "That's strange. It's tasty meat." implying that is beef.

So morale of this scene, is basically a long form of what is call "Gaslighting"

It is a manipulation method that had the victim self-doubting himself and wondering which is right and which is wrong. With The dentist implying to the already started Jong Woo that the meat could be human meat, The dentist is already starting to try to manipulate Jong Woo's thoughts and feelings. Ignoring Jong Woo's advances is also one of the gaslighting tips. This will result in Jong Woo feeling frightened and wondering is this really human meat? This is really a very cool scene to see as you can see Jong Woo getting frightened and weirded out. :)

This really tells me that everything has a meaning and it is nice to venture out into the meanings and wonder about it.

Overall Plot, I would say that, it is nice if you are in to a slow manipulated outcome. It might start of as dry as they are making realistic settings of how manipulation can be..It takes time before it goes into full effect, but let me tell you, it is worth the wait to see his transformation and challenge that he has to face. Though sometimes i felt that the story should have gone a little faster in the first part of the series, but i'm not complaining, the ending pays off well.

Acting

The acting is suppered because they acted the part with chilling emotions that would let with fear on to the audience itself. There is really nothing to comment about it other then they acted very very well. I applaud them.

Production Value & Re-watch Value

Production Value

I would say that, the production is very high in terms of the set designs that they have. The houses that the cast members interact with is very realistic and it honestly baffles me about how real it is, it almost feel like they are really in they building. The camera style as well, because this is my first time watching a OCN dramatic cinema series, it really makes me feel like I am watching a movie due to it's cinematography. The lighting itself really gives us an idea of what Jong Woo is feeling, it's not really bright in color, but sometimes, it feels very dale. Very emotionless which i would believe it is trying to state that Jong Woo is numb.

8/10

Re-Watch Value

I would say that rewatching this really needs to take time to digest, because you know how it ends, so you will no longer feel the hype that you once had, but in this series, i would say that it can be rewatched about once or so, before the series really wears off from you. Then instead of watching the full series again, you just watch parts of it. It's worth it to rewatch again though because you get to pick up more clues that they are dropping.

"Would there be strangers from hell if he chose not to go to that goshiwon? Maybe. But there is something that Jong Woo hides and only the viewer knows, this little secret determines who he actually is mentally. Which is one of the key things that allows Jong Woo to fall victim to this manipulation. I encourage people to watch this, to understand the secrets that people are holding in this series."

~ Say hi to Jong Woo and Moon Jo for me ~
