Wednesday season 2: Release date speculation as Netflix confirms sequel

Tim Burton's gothic fantasy drama will return.

Wednesday fans can, at last, breath a sigh of relief, as Netflix has finally renewed the smash-hit fantasy drama for a second season.

The show, which stars Jenna Ortega (Scream) as gothic comedy character Wednesday Addams, broke ratings records for the streamer, leading many to assume that a follow-up was a safe bet.

However, it took quite some time for Netflix to confirm as much, which was rumoured to have something to do with the show being produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) – the veteran Hollywood studio recently acquired by competitor Amazon.

Netflix has now debunked talk that the show could be snapped up by Prime Video, formally announcing that a second season is on the way and it will be staying put for the time being.

The announcement video sees our beloved disaffected teen reference the viral success of her now iconic dance, thanking fans for the "pure torture" of being "mimicked millions of times across the internet".

Read on for everything we know, including which Wednesday cast members could return for the second season.

Will there be a Wednesday season 2?

Yes! After some mild panic from fans, Netflix has confirmed that Wednesday will return for the season 2 on the streaming service, describing the show as a "global phenomenon" in the announcement video below.

Previously, there had been speculation that the wild success of the show could lead to it being poached by Prime Video, following Amazon's recent acquisition of Addams Family owner MGM for a cool $8.4 billion.

However, Deadline reported that Amazon’s MGM deal doesn’t automatically mean content from the producer will become exclusive to Prime Video.

IndieWire also sought to debunk the rumours, with a source telling the publication that a deal between Netflix and MGM had already been locked in long before Amazon purchased MGM.

Speaking to Variety, showrunner Miles Millar revealed that he and co-creator Alfred Gough hope for the show to continue beyond just season 2.

He explained: "For us, it's always looking at the future and when we sit down to create a show, it's looking at multiple seasons, ideally. That's never expected, but that's the anticipation that hopefully the show is successful.

"So you always lay out at least three or four seasons' worth of potential storylines for the characters," continued Millar. "It can evolve and change.

"Often, you want to see which characters or cast pop and who you like to write for, so you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve. But we certainly have a pretty clear runway of what we want to do in future seasons."

Netflix's Wednesday is a spin-off of The Addams Family franchise focused on the eldest Addams child, Wednesday. Most of you will recall Christina Ricci's portrayal of the macabre adolescent from the popular 90s live-action films, The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, but now there's a new Netflix series starring Jenna Ortega as the titular character.

The first season of Wednesday is a fun, wonderful, fanciful, and often dark story that shows a Wednesday rebelling against her mother and father and being sent to the Nevermore Academy in Vermont for outcasts, freaks, and monsters.

There, she becomes entangled in a gruesome murder mystery involving the students, local residents, and all sorts of monsters and ghouls including Hydes, werewolves, and more. In the end, Wednesday uncovers the killer, repairs relationships with her parents, and learns how to be a friend, but, of course, never loses sight of her morbid disposition.

Set to Lady Gaga's 'Bloody Mary', Netflix then reveals: "More misery is coming. The global phenomenon will return for season two."

I'm so excited for the second season. I adored this show so much!

The only thing I hope is that they cut the romance by a lot. Little hints here and there are ok but I really loved the focus on Wednesday herself and her budding investigation business.

It feels like dark Nancy Drew and I am here for it!
