Jung Hae In

In the 2020s, Jung Hae-in is breaking the stereotype that he will only look good in harmless boyfriend roles. After moving from melodramas such as "My Pretty Sister Who Bought Me Well," "Spring Night" and "Yuyeol's Music Album" to genres such as the "DP" series, he stably played the role of Ahn Jun-ho, a private who arrests deserters, marking a turning point in his acting history. While showing a rough and unfamiliar face within a tyrannical military organization, he still attracted viewers by giving off the warmth of his essence. His next film to be released soon is "Veteran 2." Jung Hae-in, who met Hwang Jung-min in Ryu Seung-wan's world, must have taken a leap forward.

These two articles about Hae In's career as an actor and he enters Cannes for the first time.

정해인, 천만 신스틸러→'베테랑2'로 첫 칸 초청…뚝심 질주 통했다[스타in 포커스]

Actor Jung Hae-in walks the red carpet in Cannes, France for the first time 11 years after his debut. Jung Hae-in received the honor of being invited to the 77th Cannes International Film Festival, which will open in May, as the lead role in the movie 'Veteran 2', which he collaborated with director Ryu Seung-wan. Debuting in 2013, he has been acting for 11 years. Starting as a youth romance star on the small screen, he has constantly broadened his acting spectrum through OTT (online video service) and the big screen.

Jung Hae-in, who debuted in 2013, mainly played supporting and minor roles in dramas during the early stages of his debut. Then, he began to attract attention by making a special appearance as the first love of the main character Ji Eun-tak (played by Kim Go-eun) in 'Goblin'. He quickly captured women's hearts with his handsome visuals and stable acting skills, and went on to become a popular star through his roles as Han Woo-tak in the SBS drama 'While You Were Sleeping' and supporting role as Yoo Jeong-woo in 'Prison Playlist'. Afterwards, he emerged as a small-screen romance star with an attractive younger man image through 'Pretty Sister Who Buys Me Food' with his senior Son Ye-jin and 'Spring Night' with Han Ji-min, and established himself as a leading star. What stands out in Jung Hae-in's filmography is that even after solidifying his position as a leading actor, he has taken on the challenge of acting regardless of the role and genre. If the work is high quality and the character is good, I am willing to make a special appearance.

In particular, his courageous actions on screen stood out. In addition to his supporting role in 'The King's Case Note', he played the role of Woo Sang-pil in 'Start-up', and as the third leading actor after Ma Dong-seok and Park Jung-min, he played an active role as a supporter supporting the acting of Park Jung-min and Ma Dong-seok.

During the COVID-19 period, he attempted a bold acting transformation by shedding his image as a romantic star and challenging genre works through OTT works. In the role of 'Ahn Jun-ho', the main character of the Netflix 'DP' series released in 2021 and 2023, he showed off his bromance chemistry, deep emotional acting, and action skills that are as good as romance. His action skills especially shined in the JTBC drama ‘Snowdrop’, which was released in 2021. In 2022, he also made a mark in science fiction thrillers with the Disney+ Korean series 'Connect', directed by Japanese master Takashi Miike.

Although Jung Hae-in was already enjoying popularity as a Hallyu star and top actor at the time, he received a lot of attention by choosing to make a small special appearance in 'Spring in Seoul'. Jung Hae-in played the role of Major Oh Jin-ho in ‘Spring in Seoul’ and gave off a short but bold presence.

Although it was a special appearance, the appearance of Major Oh Jin-ho, gave a moving impact to the audience.

Attention is being paid to whether he, who has walked the path with perseverance, will advance beyond being a global OTT star and become a global screen star through the Cannes International Film Festival to be held in May.

Jung Hae-in has recently been broadening his acting horizons by consistently participating in original series and Korean films on OTT platforms that have clear themes and artistic quality. She does not only stick to the lead role, but also does not hesitate to make special appearances if it is a high-quality and meaningful work.

Jung Hae In - Cannes interviews

"I was really grateful and happy to be able to come to the Cannes Film Festival with my work as an actor. Above all, it is even more meaningful because it was the time I spent with director Ryu Seung-wan and senior Hwang Jung-min on ‘Veteran 2’. In fact, it was a moment full of joy that cannot be expressed in words. I was able to receive a lot of good energy through various events at Cannes, and I think it will remain as a truly valuable and special memory in my future life as an actor.

Jung Hae-in visited the Cannes Film Festival with his mother. Regarding the reason why his mother cried, he said, “When I came to the room and asked my mother why she was crying, she said, ‘It felt like a puzzle had been put together.'” He added, “During the filming, when I came home looked like ‘green onion kimchi’, she asked, ‘What did you film today?’ “I said, ‘I came here after filming in Namsan,’ and ‘I came here in the rain,’ but while watching the movie, she thought, ‘So that’s how you came back then,’ and it seemed like the puzzle had all come together.” He continued, “My mother was so absorbed in watching it. She had to see it as a work of art, but she said, ‘My son, my son.’ As she watched the scenes in the movie, she thought, ‘Isn’t my son going to die?’” he said, laughing.

Jung Hae-in also revealed that he values ‘mind control’ while living in the entertainment industry. He confessed, “I think comparing things that were good in the past is one of the ways I become unhappy,” and “I felt that a lot while working in the entertainment industry.” He then confessed, “I realized that there is a slight difference between unhappiness and happiness, and that it depends on how I think. If I keep looking up, feel envious, and jealous, I become impatient and unhappy.” He added, “When you focus on the present, you become calm and grateful,” adding, “The reason I said I didn’t think there was an inflection point after Cannes was in the same context.

"I was wondering when I would see a movie at Lumiere again, so I enjoyed it as an audience member for the first time without analyzing the acting.”

Jung Hae-in said, “Usually when I do a preview, I focus on my acting and analyze it, but this time I didn’t. I felt like I would regret it. I watched it for the first time thinking I would enjoy it as an audience member, and time went by quickly. I thought I would enjoy it without regrets.”

Jung Hae-in interpreted Park Seon-woo, who he played, saying,”The standards of good and evil are ambiguous and subjective. Each person has a different definition, and when evaluating someone as ‘good,’ it is different whether they are good to me or good to society.

Walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival was a huge success for a movie star, but Jung Hae-in said there was no difference before and after Cannes.

He said, “Cannes is Cannes, and I have to go back and work hard on filming the remaining drama. If I keep trying to look up, I become impatient and unhappy. There is a difference between being unhappy and happy, so I try to focus on the present.”
