(Netflix) For director Hwang Dong-hyuk, producing the upcoming mystery sci-fi series “Squid Game” brought about mixed emotions. “After debuting with ‘My Father,’ I read a lot of comics and was mesmerized by survival games. With an attempt to create a Korean version, I started planning out the work in 2008 and finished the scenario in 2009,” the director said in an online press conference Wednesday. “However, casting actors and getting investment were extremely difficult during these periods. The idea of a game winner who strikes it rich was unwelcomed. The brutality and cruelty of the games were of concern. I had to put the scenario on the shelf.” More than a decade later, interest in survival games and cryptocurrency picked up. "Unlike 2009, many people were fascinated by the script and I decided to expand the original scenario to shoot a Netflix series,” Hwang added. Director Hwang’s Netflix debut, “Squid Game,” revolves around hundreds of cash-strapped players accepting an unexpected invitation to compete in various children’s games for a tempting prize of 45.6 billion won ($39 million). The competitors, faced with a life-changing opportunity, find out that each game puts their lives at stake. Taking place at an undisclosed site, the contestants are prohibited from leaving the premises until a final winner is declared. The nine-part series “Squid Game” will arrive on Netflix on Sept. 17. When the game begins, he risks his life to win the games.” In addition, Lee Jung Jae gave a glimpse at his miserable character in Squid game. Regarding this whole new character he played, Lee Jung Jae said, “I don’t think I underwent any dramatic transformation, but I couldn’t stop laughing after watching the drama. I was like, does he have a brain?” Director Hwang Dong Hyuk said, “I wanted to work with Lee Jung Jae because I always wanted to break his image. He gets typecast a lot for the cool roles like his role in Sandglass. I thought it would be nice for him to show his humanity which I saw at times, so I asked him to join as Ki Hoon.” Source

    I think so too. Actually I thought HaRam the child died when he fell into the water and was somehow revived due to the Demon. So if the Demon is removed, won't HR die? Need to rewatch that scene though. So I'm not too vested in it. I quite like Prince YangMyeong 😂 In the earlier episode he was bumbling and a comic. But as host of the Competition, he was surprisingly "solid". Not that I think they will end up together, but I wouldn't mind their scenes together haha. There were 3 renowned painters in the competition: 1. Master painter, Monk Manyoo - he drew Vimalakirti on the wall of the temple and the temple shined brightly. 2. Touch of a deity, Kang Hee Yeon - a scholar painter who grew up as a gifted child. 3. Magical touch, Sim Dae Yu, also known as Sim with a bamboo hat Wonder if these 3 are here only for the competition or will they be helping/hindering Cheon Gi at the end? What is surprising is that the Goblin seeks out #3 to have paint-offs. Does this mean the Goblin is primarily harmless?

    @abs-oluteM Viu has subs quite early - almost within the hour of SK telecast. You can't wait and prefer to stream without subs? 😂 Or is Viu Malaysia different from SG 🤔 Episode 5 was enjoyable. I am admiring the actress who plays Cheon Gi. She's got the wide-eyed innocence but is also strong-willed. Really pretty when she smiles. It's a pleasure to watch her. [Edit: She's only 22!!! But has a long list of movies and dramas - acting since she was a child. Wow.] The drawing competition was also fun. Love the set-up and the details. And the music - it's so upbeat, like Mr Queen when she was in the kitchen! And abs-soluteM was right. Prince YangMyeong was sly - he created a theme specially to draw out the forger. If you remember, CG left a hidden butterfly as her mark in the forged painting. So when she drew the butterfly for the competition, he knew and tried to fail her. [He seemed to have forgotten that he was actually interested in her - that's no way to chase a girl 😂] Fortunately, Ahn Gyeon used his free pass and let her through. The most amazing was this - the live butterflies flew and chose to land on CG's painting - because it was so lifelike that the butterflies thought the blossoms were real! GIF credit to @silvertrhee ❤

    Regarding the mystery of why Yeo Hwa-Jeong & Chang Yeong-Guk divorced, this thread has a theory and supported by receipts I have to say I have a hard time rooting for HJ and YG to get back together even though they have a child - he just seems so undeserving.
