The King's Affection 연모 [2021]

Recommended Posts

Didn't think it was possible but this show and the Main Leads have been infuriating me more and more every week; so much so, that I have now dropped the show. I just can't handle stupid leads.

What in the world are Dami and JiUn thinking making goo goo eyes at each other, romancing and kissing in and around the palace? Hyun clearly warned JiUn that Dami's life would be in danger if he showed even an inkling of feelings and so he kept his distance. Are these two idiots so hormonal and desperate that they don't care about the danger to Dami and his life(maybe his family too)? Not just theirs but if her truth comes out, her whole team, everyone near her will be killed brutally to save the palace and the officials from the embarrassment of being fooled by a female for so long. With so many lives at stake these two should be really ashamed of acting so foolishly. Use your tiny brains and stay away from each other for Gods sake.

Hyun is the only intelligent person in the show and the saving grace. I hope when the truth comes out, he becomes the King instead.

Prince Changwoon (the supposedly dead uncle) , disguised as an assassin, tried to harm Lee Hwi and the entourage, and in the process tried to determine whether Lee Hwi was a woman or not. He intentionally cut off Lee Hwi's clothes  with a knife and tried to check it, but he couldn't see it properly because Jeong Seok-jo (Bae Soo-bin) appeared and fought him off - handling the situation.

After that, Changwoon went to Prince Wonsan (Kim Taek). Wonsan asked Changwoon-gun, who rushed in, "Did you check. Is it a girl?"

Changwoon  made his excuses, saying, "It may or may not be true. Suddenly, Yoon Hyungseol , Lee Hwi's escort guard  appeared."

Upon hearing that Chang Woon (Kim Seo-ha) had attacked Hwi (Park Eun-bin), Kim Sang-gung (Baek Hyeon-joo) is worried that Chang Woon and Jeong Seok-jo (Bae Soo-bin) might have found out Hwi's secret. Hwi replied, “If it turns out that I am alive, that person’s life will also be difficult to spare.”

At this time, Lee Hyeon (Nam Yunsu) hears the news of Hwi and goes to Daejeon. “I heard you met an assassin. But is it true that that person is  Uncle Changun-gun?” "There is no doubt," Hwi answered.

Hyun said, "My uncle was close to my brother, so he must know something." He insists that he will investigate the full story of the case.

Ji-woon asks Jeong Seok-jo why he was at the attack site of Chang-woon's army. “Did your father also come to Yun Hyeong-seol’s grave? I heard from mother that you were friends with him.”

However, instead of answering, Jeong Seok-jo tells him that he will investigate the reason why Chang Woon, who died, is still alive.

Ji-woon was terrified that Jeong Seok-jo,  would report the case to Hwi's maternal grandfather Han Ki Jae, and Jeong Seok-jo said, "Isn't it unbelievable that the dead have returned alive? I think it would be better for me to investigate further and speak directly to Han Ji Kae.”

Meanwhile, among the court ladies, rumors start to circulate that Hwi and Jiwoon are secretly dating. It spreads rumors that Hwi committed sodomy  when the two of them are secretly found going somewhere every night. This rumor quickly reached the ears of Jung-Jeon (Jung Chae-Yeon), and she misunderstood that the reason Hwi was avoiding the consummating  the marriage  was because of Ji-Woon.

As rumors spread out of control, Kim Sang-gung warns Hwi. “You must refrain from meeting with Ji Woon for the time being, Your Majesty. Wouldn't it be dangerous for both of you if rumors got to your grandfather?"

Hwi, who was with Jiwoon to receive a report from Gaon (Byungchan Choi), said, “Didn’t you say you could handle everything?” He calms Jiwoon, who is wary. But Ji-woon persuades Hwi that it would be better to keep distance for the time being.

Spoiler recaps for eps 17 (Part 2)

Confused about the rumours , the Queen goes to see Hwi, but turns away because he is absent. While walking through the palace, she finds Hwi coming out with Ji-woon from a secret place and is shocked.

After spending the night in tears, Queen visits Hwi the next day. “Just let me have an heir. I am not the mother of this country without one.  Please let me do what I should do as the Queen. Other than that , I will not ask for  anything else.” Hearing the Queen's suggestion, , Hwi sends out a pathetic gaze without answering anything.

The rumor eventually reached the ear of the grandfather , and Jeong Seok-jo was warned about this. Ji-woon is denied entry to Daejeon (Hwi's residence)  due to the opposition from Kim Sang-gung and Hong Nae-gwan. Afterwards, he was called by the Queen, saying, “All the elders of the royal family, including the great Queen Mother, are paying a lot of attention to the rumors about His Majesty and Tutor Jung . If you are truly loyal to His Majesty, please leave the palace on your own.”

Meanwhile Jeong Seok Jo also threaten Ji Woon, saying he will expose Hwi's identity of Ji Woon does not marry to quell the rumours.

Jeong Seok-jo visits Minister  Shin Young-soo (Park Won-sang) and proposes marriage for  Shin's  daughter, So-eun (Bae Yoon-kyung) with Ji-woon. So-eun tells her father that she wants to marry Ji-woon, and the marriage preparation  between the two families proceeds quickly.

The news of Jung Ji-woon's marriage also reached Lee Hwi's ears. Lee Hwi thought of Jung Ji Woon as she walked alone. At this time,  Ji-woon appeared in front of Lee Hwi.

Lee Hwi said, "Where have you been all day? You didn't  even show up at Seungjeongwon, so I was so worried." Jung Ji-woon said, "I have something to tell you. I  will hold a wedding."

Lee Hwi said, "If it's because of the rumors floating around in the palace, please stop. Are you not prepared? We are both prepared ." Lee Hwi asked, "Is it because you want it. Why do you lie like that?  Why are you doing this? Please tell me what happened. Why is there a reason you can't tell me?"

Ji-woon said, "I don't want to lose my charge. This is the only way I don't lose it. I think I have to stop here your Majesty " and turned around. Lee Hwi said, "I haven't told you to stop yet," but Jung Ji Woon was about to leave in tears. Lee Hwi exclaimed, “Stand there" .

Episode 17

Not liking the execution of the storyline anymore. The writing went downhill somewhere from the episodes when Hwi was deposed. Characters were not developed properly for the secondary leads and supporting roles. I wasn't invested in the King's Royal Guard and naturally felt nothing when he died. The characterisation of Noh Ha Kyung and Shin So Eun are meh as well and underdeveloped.

Granted I feel sorry for Ha Kyung's life being ruined but choosing to crush on Hwi and having fantasy about it was entirely on herself. The rumour of Hwi and Ji Woon has no basis. It's not like anyone saw them being inappropriately intimate like the kiss Ji Woon's father witnessed. So it's difficult to feel for her sadness because she first hears the gossip from her servant where Ji Woon and Hwi were together at midnight. That could be explained away with something easily! Fueled by her own insecurity since they never consummated, the rumour bothers her. She then saw them walking together and Ji Woon respectfully gave Hwi a bow and walked away. That's it. Nothing else. And this "normal" interaction was enough to see her running away and cried her eyes out. Errr... sorry but not convinced.

I'm also disappointed with all the supposedly "political" bits in the show. It is uninteresting and show no progress this week. Show is definitely brewing up something for the showdown in the finale since they are still dwelling on the poisonous herb but still, it just doesn't seem like something enough to bring down Grandpa dearest and his empire! There is also very little of Lee Hyun and Ga On when they are supposed to be the secondary leads. It's just messy.

And I most definitely am not impressed about the bit where So Eun begs her father to let her marry Ji Woon. Which part of Ji Woon's "I do not like you that way" is she not clear about? Why are these women one-sidedly decide it is OK to marry the person they knew does not love them back? I'm already not happy Hwi had to marry Ha Kyung while she has happy time with Ji Woon. Now I'm even more annoyed that Show is making Ji Woon become the selfish one too, for the sake of Hwi. Not cool, Show, not cool. I can only crossed my fingers that the marriage fall through in tonight's episode.

By the way... when is Ji Woon going to find out Hwi = Dam-i? And Hwi was killed by his own father? Or it doesn't matter anymore because Ji Woon loves her anyway, and she loves him too?

@mademoiselle the plot was a lot more engaging in the 1st half. Perhaps if this was 16 eps, the storytelling would be tighter.

Finally ! JW  finds out from CL Kim that Hwi is actually Dami

I have only had the chance to watch ep.16 and 17 today... Gah, this drama is even more tear-jerking than Red Sleeve Cuff... So we're going the noble idiocy way. But really, I don't know how they can ever be together unless Dam is no longer the King...??

On to ep.18 now, hopefully a little bit happier than 17.

Appreciate JW's father who helped them and tried to think of a way out. It's sad watching his scenes with Guard Yoon dying. He is definitely written on the way of redemption. Unfortunately, I think he's gonna lose his life for the sake of his son. I hope not. I don't want anyone to die. I'm kinda scared for Hyun as well... he also might die at the hand of his own brother, or the evil grandfather of Dam.

Edit after ep.18.... I spoke a little too soon it seems. Looks like Hyun will really die in the next preview. Unexpectedly, seems like Court Lady Kim and Eunuch Hong will also die too?? Then JW's father is also being restrained by evil grandfather's people, and JW captured too? O gosh... :nervous: We should feed grandpa and Hyun's brother to the zombies.

Episode 18

So Dam-i does know that the evidences she has against Grandpa isn't enough to really take him down. Good. That leaves me very curious how she intends to fight against him.

And hurray to Ji Woon finally knows she is Dam-i but what a way to be told his own father is the one who caused it all and the most dangerous person to his lover.

I'm praying hard that Hyun didn't truly die (like would they really spoil us this badly even though they did for the Ahjussi Guard) since it was his own brother who was made to slice him.

Prepare for lots of writing from me. I'm trying to catch up before the finale!!! I cringe so much every time watching the scenes with the Queen by the way. I don't like silly girly characters, but I also feel sorry for her because she's just like a teenage fangirl and she has no idea that her husband is not exactly a husband. :idk:

Dam-i: Is it too much to ask you to treat me the same way as you use to

[while keeping the friendzone]

Hyun: No, never. You are my King

I have been cringe watching slowly.  Often putting in pause because it’s becoming so sad.  Finished episode 18…   everyone is dying!

I feel so sorry for the women who are being ditched for Dami

it is so frustrating watching this old fart have so much power over everyone. All he does is move his mouth with threats.

I hope Dami will have a happy end somehow. the preview of more people dying is making me say good riddance!  let’s hurry up and get this over with.
