BTS tops list of best-selling artists in Japan for 2nd year

optimize-1.jpg

A photo of K-pop boy group BTS, provided by Big Hit Music.

K-pop superband BTS has become the first overseas act to top the Japanese music tracker Oricon's total annual sales ranking for the second consecutive year.

The Korean band ranked No. 1 both in the total rankings and digital rankings in the "artist sales" category, according to the annual rankings for 2022 unveiled by Oricon on Friday.

The artist sales charts rank artists by the sales of their singles, albums, DVDs and streaming content. The septet became the first non-Japanese act to top the total ranking last year. Even when Japanese artists are included, only four acts, including BTS, have been on the throne two consecutive times.

BTS also was No. 1 in the digital rankings boosted by the streams of its megahit songs "Dynamite," "Butter" and "Permission to Dance," and downloads of the digital version of its anthology album "Proof."

"We were able to take the honor thanks to ARMY and the many others who love our music," the group said through its agency, Big Hit Music, citing the name of its global fandom. "We were happy to hold concerts in various places and meet you ARMYs around the world this year. We'll exert efforts to become an artist who returns the love with better music."

Thank you for posting news stories about BTS @twink_twink_! I admit that I'm not as good unless they're releasing a new song or MV, so it's nice you posting things here. I also don't read that many articles, so it's extra nice to come here and read them. So, thanks again!

I'm excited that j-hope is going to be performing in NY, though it would have been nice to have all the guys. However, I would surprised if they did any group activities, except for stuff that has been pre-filmed, e.g. Run BTS, until they have all done their military service. I miss Jin so much! Perhaps Jimin will go along again to enjoy the atmosphere?

Looking forward to the next bit of solo music to drop. Listening to 'Indigo' a lot, though 'Proof' is on heavier rotation for me.

RM’s first solo album 'Indigo' reaches No. 3 on Billboard 200

Promotional image for RM's "Indigo" [Big Hit Music]

BTS leader RM’s first solo album “Indigo” ranked No. 3 on the Billboard 200, according to the chart on Monday.

This makes him the first member from the boy band to enter the chart’s top 10 as a solo act. BTS announced a hiatus from its group activities in June, and its members have been making official solo debuts since. RM was the third to release solo music, following J-Hope and Jin.

After dropping on Dec. 2, “Indigo” ranked No. 15 on Dec. 17’s Billboard 200, but failed to make the chart the following week.

However, when the physical CDs of “Indigo” were released on Dec. 16, the album placed at No. 3 thanks to sales. This is the highest rank on the Billboard 200 achieved by a solo K-pop artist. The former highest record was by Nayeon of girl group Twice, who reached No. 7 with her first solo album “Im Nayeon.”

J-Hope, who was the first BTS member to officially drop solo music, reached No. 17 with his album “Jack In The Box” back in July.

The Billboard 200 albums chart takes into account physical CD sales as well as the number of online streams and downloads converted to count as CD sales. One-thousand five-hundred on-demand streams are counted as one streaming equivalent album (SEA), and 10 track downloads are counted as one track equivalent album (TEA).

“Indigo” sold 83,000 albums in the latest tally; 79,000 in physical CD sales and 4,000 in SEA. There were almost no TEA registered.

BTS's Jimin is extending his great popularity in several countries.

In September of this year, the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE) released their annual Global Hallyu Trends Report. This is an office founded under the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in 2003. It has been “working toward transcending borders in order to promote mutual understanding and friendly relations with nations around the world.”

According to the 2022 report from the KOFICE Trends, Jimin was ranked 4th in the category of Brazil's most preferred Hallyu stars behind BTS, BLACK PINK, and Psy, with a rate of 2.6%. This was also published in the Brazilian major news outlet JORNALEXTRA, and he was the highest BTS member on the list.

In the United States, Jimin was ranked fifth at 0.6%, tying with G Dragon (Big Bang), ITZY, and Taeyeon of Girls' Generation making him the only BTS member to enter the list along with the other Korean superstars. This was also behind BTS, Black Pink, IU/Psy, and EXO/Twice. Jimin was once again ranked 5th with a 2.0% rate in Turkey, ranking behind BTS, BLACK PINK, EXO/Psy/Big Bang and IU, showcasing great popularity in the country and the Middle East region.

In addition to the US, Brazil, and Turkey, Jimin was also revealed to be the most popular member tied or outright in Australia, Argentina, and Vietnam, according to KOFICE, although ranked outside the top 5 Korean singers or groups. The KOFICE this year collected and analyzed data across 18 countries, and while country-specific tables show only the Top 5, the overall countries chart shows the percentage per country.

Jimin has a strong presence in the United States with fans, locals, and the media, including radio stations, a phenomenon which birthed the 'US Media darling' title. His solo songs "Filter," "Lie," and "Serendipity" have each sold over 500K units, with "Friends" at 300K and "With You" over 100K units in the country. The term 'jimmerica' was coined because of his popularity among star-studded personalities.

Last month, we got unexpected views about Jin becoming the advertising model for Ottogi's Jin Ramen, a huge Korean brand of ramen that we can buy overseas as well. Jin Ramen brand released a special article talking about their work with Jin. The officials said that they wanted to get Jin as their model for a few years, but the idol could not accept the offer back in the day. It's known that Jin has been getting a lot of offers and deals, but the company declined them all due to the group's policy.

A few days ago, the ranking for Advertising Models in November was released, and Jin ranked #4 in the overall list. He is the only artist with just one advertisement there. He also ranked 3rd as the CF King, being surpassed only by his own group and footballer Son Heung Min.

Spoiler

Jin is sincere about music, while Jin Ramen is sincere about taste - this is the official slogan of the campaign. Jin's advertisement is broadcast on TV and banners and some stores even have little LED lines with Jin on the shelves with Jin Ramen. Apparently, the Korean version also has special stickers with Jin.

Spoiler

Only artists with a clear and good image can become CF models for the Ottogi company. For example, it was advertised by chef Baek Jong Won, actor Namgoong Min, basketball player Ryu Hyun Jin, an Olympic gamed gold medalist Park Sang Young and actor Jang Dong Gun. Now, Jin is also on this list. The campaign got lots of attention because of Jin's beautiful face, comfy charisma and popularity.

Spoiler

Fh-N9-EX-UUAAs-ed.jpg

Very frequently after the release of the advertisement with Jin, people around the world started noticing that Jin Ramen is getting fully sold out in the stores around their cities. In Korea and Japan, the shelves with Jin Ramen were getting fully emptied. Many were looking for a place where they can buy a package of Jin Ramen. A K-Economy article says Ottogi outperformed their previous sales record this year and it is projected that their revenue will soar even higher, especially in overseas markets due to Jin's commercial endorsement.

Singer IU and Jungkook of boy band BTS were named on Rolling Stone’s list of “Greatest Singers of All Time.” They were the only K-pop singers on the list revealed Monday.

Two-hundred singers from all regions and generations were included, such as Aretha Franklin, who was ranked at No. 1, followed by Whitney Houston, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday and Mariah Carey.

The two Korean singers were both praised for their vocals. IU landed at No. 135 and Jungkook at No. 191.

Jungkook was described as “the multifaceted youngest member of BTS” by the magazine.

“He’s a strong performer, written several songs and is known to be extremely hardworking and humble despite the success he’s experienced at such an early age,” the article said.

“He hits high notes with ease and harmonies with his members effortlessly, always giving his audience new ad-libs and unexpected vocal riffs to keep things interesting, from his official solo tracks like ‘Euphoria’ to the covers he uploads for fans on BTS’s SoundCloud.”

The webtoon OST market gathered further momentum last year when the global K-pop sensation BTS created songs for the Naver webtoon and web novel titled "7Fates: Chakho," an urban fantasy inspired by the septet.

Its theme song "Stay Alive," produced by Suga and sung by Jungkook of BTS, was an instant sensation upon its release in February 2022. It topped iTunes Top Songs charts in over 100 nations, and entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the British Official Singles Chart.

So far, "Stay Alive" has garnered 170 million streams on Spotify, the world's No. 1 music streaming subscription platform that offers an independent section for "K-Webtoon OST" songs.

BTS and Coldplay’s hit collab “My Universe” has gone platinum in the United Kingdom. British Phonographic Industry (BPI) announced that “My Universe” had been certified platinum early this year. In the United Kingdom, singles are certified platinum once they reach 600,000 units sold.  “My Universe” is now only BTS’s second single to go platinum in the UK after “Dynamite,” which achieved this certification since in August 2021.

The collaboration was first released on September 24, 2021 and was certified silver in the United Kingdom less than two months later.

Last March, “My Universe” went gold in the UK after reaching 400,000 units sold.

Billboard highlighted “Left and Right,” a collaborative work between BTS’ Jungkook and Charlie Puth, as one of the 17 Biggest Song Collaborations of 2022.

The “charming, cleverly produced duet” peaked at No. 22 on Billboard’s Hot 100, making Jungkook’s highest charting entry as a solo musician. The single stayed on the chart for 17 consecutive weeks, the longest streak for a K-pop idol. “Left and Right” was also listed on six of Billboard’s year-end charts.

It hit No. 1 on iTunes top songs chart in 106 regions and logged 450 million streams via Spotify in 193 days.

The song also was among the top 10 most requested songs in 2022 listed by iHeartRadio last week. It was No. 2 on the list, while “Dreamers,” part of the official soundtrack for the 2022 FIFA World Cup sung by Jungkook, was No. 7.
