Here we go... the finale...

We picked up where the phone rang, and ES realising who the Assistant was. He answered the call without removing his gaze on ES. ES feigned ignorance despite being suspicious, got up slowly from the desk and walked quietly away. He said something which I didn't catch, and we flashback to the night 10 years ago. He walked to the door of the officetel. JKB had removed his watch and put it on the counter and started beating and kicking ES violently. Then he rested to take a sip of alcohol. Assistant took a knife and stabbed him to death, and staged ES with the knife. He then called 911 and played a recording into it. Back to present, he put on black latex gloves, and said something like he should've killed her. ES who was standing near the kitchen counter threw the basket of dishes to him, but he overpowered her. Although she managed to stab his leg with a small knife, he was strangling her already. ES passed out. Just then, JM came and hit the his head with a pot, they fought a bit but he got away. Ambulance came for ES, she managed to tell JM that's the person who killed JKB and passed out again.

In the hospital, ES woke up and the first thing she said to JM was that whether she can still go through the surgery for WJ. JM told her that her well-being is more important, not to worry about that first. She asked if that person is caught or not. She really would've never guessed that he was the murderer. JM updated her about 6049, and that inside they found the evidence of her father's murder, that it wasn't an accident. ES couldn't believe it and started wailing.

In prison, someone (lawyer?) is updating KHR that Assistant is wanted now. He showed her the news coverage. She looked shocked.

JM's parents visited ES, and when they see her state, they were so shocked and made a great fuss about it. ES apologised for making them worry. Mom is already referring to herself as ES's mother and asked her to drink the soup she brought. ES asked about WJ and they told her how WJ has been wanting to see her but don't worry about it yet. JM got a call from his colleague, telling him something about the Assistant (Kim) and Kim Hyang Mi. So JM and police officer went to the place where the paintings are being stored. JM inspected the paintings and noticed that the signature "Hyang" is erasable leaving only the letters "u" and "ng".

KHR asking her lawyer about Asst.Kim, how is he? The lawyer is advising her about something. KHR said no, she insisted that she and Hwang are the ones who killed JKB and Yoon. She flashback to a phone call with Hwang, and in the middle of it, Asst.Kim came into the room and they just stared at each other.

Cut to JM and officer coming out of the building where paintings are kept, while JM still thinking about the connection of the two Kims. He then suggested to go to the place where David went to earlier. Many officers went there. The basement room that was full of paintings is now empty. When they were on their way out, JM noticed the other room entrance opposite of it. They had to force the door open. Inside, they found Asst.Kim painting KHR. He is bloodied from the fight earlier. Police arrested him. Then we get a fuller picture of the painting. It's of KHR holding a baby.

ES on her bed. She received a text message from JM telling her that Asst.Kim is caught. Cut to KHR in the prison, she was told that Asst.Kim was caught, and she looked sad. As she was escorted to her cell, we flashback again to earlier flashback of JKB while being high, clutching KHR's legs. She walked away, and two men dragged a badly beaten Asst.Kim into the room. She asked if it is JKB's doing? He stood up, a little bit more sober, and said lots of stuff, which I didn't really catch, but the impression I got is that KHR is asking JKB not to touch Asst.Kim otherwise she will kill him. Back to present, in prison corridor, KHR repeated what she said, don't touch him, and screamed, don't touch my kid! So it is true that Asst.Kim is her biological son! News coverage again on the latest update.

JM at the hospital parking. He saw WJ's doctor and they greeted each other. Doc told JM that ES already signed an organ donor agreement. JM was down as he walked through the hospital corridor. He saw ES in front of WJ's room, and she walked away after peeking inside. He didn't go after her. He walked into WJ's room and WJ asked him whether he has seen ES lately. He told her actually ES is hurt and she doesn't want WJ to worry. WJ said she wants to see ES. JM started to talk very carefully to WJ that actually he has something to confess to her. It's difficult for him to say it but WJ was the one who said that is it about her being adopted. JM is surprised that she already knew, since when, he asked? She told him it was when SM left and she overheard their phone call. JM was quite sad and asked why she never said anything. She doesn't want him to feel sad. JM continued with telling her that actually ES is her mother. But ES doesn't want JM to tell WJ first before the surgery. Cut to WJ later on in her bed, thinking back to all the previous encounters with ES that had clues on their relationship. She cried quietly.

Prison. ES visiting KHR. Some confrontation as per preview. KHR said it's not over between them. ES demanded why her? KHR said it's because ES lied to her. Flashback to KHR by the bedside with the hurt Asst.Kim laying asleep. She called ES, who had wounds all over her face as well. She told her to stay there. When ES hang up, we see she was in a messy bedroom, with a suitcase by her side, and she held up the USG scan of baby and said I will protect you. Back to present, more confrontation. ES got up to leave and KHR became agitated ordering her not to leave, and had to be held back by the officers.

Hospital. JM is accompanying WJ to have her meals. She asked for ES. JM told her something about being discharged already. Then WJ said something which I didn't catch, to which JM asked Can we really do that? Anyway, we cut to WJ being back at the grandparents restaurant. The whole family is preparing to eat together, and ES came by. WJ smiled at her. Some karaoke session led by the Aunt. Then Grandpa asked for ES to also sing. The family cheered her on when she refused. So we get some singing from her as well. It's the OST, I think. While she sings, we are shown the montage of previous happy art making between WJ and ES. They also blew a candle off the cake, although nobody's birthday. Then family photo taking session.

Back to the hospital. Family gathered around WJ's bed, with doctor. When medical team left, Grandma told JM to go over and accompany ES and they will stay with WJ. Cut to ES on hospital bed, with her BFF who started crying already. ES told her not to cry. She asked ES to promise that she must live. JM came, and BFF updated him about what doctor said earlier, then left the room. JM sat beside ES but not looking at her. ES asked him to look at her, but he won't. She even got up and had to cup his face to look at her. She caressed his face and assured him that being with JM and WJ is like a miracle for her, so if anything happens to her, don't be sad. O gosh, I can't see the screen properly anymore with my tears... JM said I love you. ES replied I love you too.

WJ is being pushed to the surgery with grandparents and aunt. She told them not to cry. Cut to ES being pushed with JM by her side. They met at a corner, JM walked over to WJ, she called Appa. JM told her not to worry, he will be there, then kissed WJ. She smiled. ES called WJ and encouraged her not to be afraid. WJ said "ok" followed by "omma", everyone surprised, and WJ continued with "thank you omma" She reached out her hand to ES and they held hands. I'm a crying mess now... WJ is being pushed inside first, followed by ES. Surgery started. Some anxious beeping from the machine... surely we will have a happy ending with only minutes left??? We cut to a dream sequence of ES calling out WJ's name. They're both standing in an all dark place. ES handed WJ a firefly and said some comforting stuff to her. They are both smiling... o gosh, what's going on here? ES said "WJ I love you my daughter", and hugged her. The tension is killing me!!!

We cut to a year later. JM is cutting some kimbab happily for WJ. He asked her to hurry. WJ came out with two outfit and asked for his opinion which is better. He pointed to one and also gave her a kimbab to taste. The TV is showing David winning another trophy. Then cut to JM in car driving with WJ. They're smiling. This is not looking good people.... They're all dressed in black and WJ had a bouquet of flower on her lap. The car reached a cemetery. Then they got off the car, JM said with a smile, let's go to omma, while holding out his hand to WJ.

Spoiler

Slow motion walking with peaceful BGM playing in background. JM and WJ turned the corner, and then WJ ran, while calling Omma. Finally they revealed that ES is still alive. WJ hugged her. They were there to pay respect to her father. O gosh, what a tease!!!! I was holding my breath. The family hugged together and screen freeze there.

End of drama ~ Credit scenes showed some of the BTS cuts.

Yes, this is such a good drama. The acting, directing, editing is just top notch. Definitely deserved being the highest rating drama for the broadcasting channel. I am so happy for the cast and the production team.

I thought the rating would reach 7% last night but the finale exceeded K-citizen expectations and they reach 8.2% instead. Sincerely congratulation to all staffs and actors for their hard work. :CharmanderYay:

I think I understood a little why the ending scene where Eun Soo, Ji Min and Woo Joo meet at the cemetary reach the highest minute. After the scene with the firefly and expression that both Ji Min and Woo Joo wear during their trip in the car, plus with the flower, I almost lost it and having bad thoughts that Eun Soo didn't make it. Thank the writer that she ended it with a happy scene and Eun Soo is still alive. K-netz would probably riot if she didn't make it after everything that she had to endure.

I want to applaud the actors and actresses for a very great job. The child actress Go Na Hee did a very great job. Her solo scene when she processed the fact that Eun Soo is her mother and when I re-watch the scene again after knowing the fact that she is an adopted child, I saw a different look in her eyes while she did the scene. And then the scene where Woo Joo finally said 'Mom' to Eun Soo... At that time everyone might think that Woo Joo has opened her heart to accept Eun Soo as her new mother, but only Woo Joo and Ji Min knew how impactful that word because Woo Joo knew all the truth now.

Lee Yu Ri and Yeon Jung Hoon. Both give an outstanding performance throughout the whole episodes. The love they have for Woo Joo and each other are just sweet. Eun Soo last confrontation with Ho Ran is just powerful. Ji Min should have changed job from reporter and become a detective because he almost did all the investigation himself :MewGiggle:

Lee Il Hwa too did a fabulous job as a villain. I'm so used seeing her playing a good role, as a good and kind mother. In here many times I want to see her lost and fail so much for her bad deeds. It just show how a great actress she is.

Thank you @ktcjdrama for doing a live recap and share it with the rest of us in here. Thanks @UnniSara for opening the thread for us to discuss the drama. And thanks to @abs-oluteM for calling me to join in here. I have been silently watching and rant for the first few episodes alone in twitter because no one seems to watch this drama. I'm glad that this drama got its deserved popularity :eeeee:

@SilverMoonTea did you stay until the end of the series? What do you think?

I just got off the final episode , and I was crying in so many scenes. Loved the ending but it was also so emotional. I started tearing up when JM's folks told ES to treat them as her parents . Then I was a mess when JM told WJ the story of her birth and how ES is actually her mum. This young actress playing WJ is so well casted - she was superb in all the emotional scenes & had great chemistry with Lee YR.  I also loved the conversation between JM and YR at her hospital bed where they both told each other "I love you" . However the one that was the most touching was WJ calling ES  - omma. This made me cry a river.

WpQyn7h.png

The drama continued to tease us - if I had not read the recaps, I would have been fooled with the way they did the last part. They set the whole scenario as if they were visiting her grave .  I would have flipped if she died.

Anyway I am glad that both KHR and her son got their due punishment. In some strange twisted way, KHR was  a mum who did love her son very much but it wasn't the son we thought. It was a good plot twist , and one that I was not expecting until later episodes when we found out JKB was not her biological son.

This was such a good drama and I would recommend it to all. It had an intense but well-crafted plot. There was never a dull moment with so many unexpected twists.  This is how makjang should be done , and thinking about it my makjang choice of marrying her turned out the 1st thing JM did to help ES! I cannot believe it.

Thanks so much @ktcjdrama for the recaps - I wait with great anticipation each time. Thanks @LaLa for always answering my calls for translations. Much appreciated. I am glad you opened this thread @UnniSara...lurking here got me to watch the 1st two episodes and I was hooked.

I look forward to reading your final thoughts @40somethingahjumma, @im0202 @joccu__ @SilverMoonTea

Wow episode 15-16. Was amazing,  I cried and felt for every character in this drama. Yes I even felt bad for JGB , KHR and Kim Woo.

I felt that KHR did love JGB but when it came to her son she was conflicted. Her attention towards her real son is what ruined JGB. JGB was an addict and she created him. She made him the man he was because the moment her son came into the picture she planned for her child to own everything. It was all about greed. Her greed got her child to be abused over and over and over again. Toward the end it wasn't about love but guilt in ruining her sons life. She let him be her protector and become a monster.  KHR was a liar and refused to see where it all went wrong because she believed she did nothing wrong. I had lots of question for this KRH. I wondered if her son really mattered and why did she think she deserved to be the Chairwoman. I think her love for her son wasn't as strong as ES's love for her child was. ES was willing to suffer and do whatever she can to protect her child. Unlike KKH chose lies and deceit to protect a child who she endangered for her greed.

Se Mi finally saw her mistake in her wanting to be in Woo Joo's but I kinda felt I wished she was there when WJ went in surgery. Then I realized she was no longer part of the family so her letter in episode 15 was perfect and right. Ending her chapter in WJ's life.

Thank you @LaLa for the transltions you did as the drama aired. I really appreciate it. @abs-oluteM Glad you watched this drama with me, for the stills and news about this drama.

This was really fun. If there comes a time you need me to open another thread just let me know.

@joccu__ @ktcjdrama @SilverMoonTea @im0202 Thanks for coming to this tread and watching this drama with me.

WJ knowing all this time that she was spotted was really a shocked and it explained why WJ didn't really embrace her mom when she came back. She knew it in her heart that her mom abandoned her so easily was because she was adopted. Usually a woman would fight really hard especially when they are getting a divorce with their husband unlike SM who gave up so abruptly. Go Ha Nee/ WJ performance is amazing and she will keep getting better as she get older. It explains why she chose for her father's happiness over mom. She knew her father's happiness was the more important. Especially when ES was so special to her and she did not know why? When she found out who ES is? To find out the truth, it broke her heart and she remembered how they met and the emotions she expressed when they first met.

Finally

ES and JM said they loved each other, spending time with the family, the Karaoke diner, the PUTTING RINGS ON EACH OTHER , was a real nice touch.

My interpretation is that she did love JKB because he saved her when she was abused. But JKB found out about her real son and got jealous, insecure and suspicious of her intention because she kept it a secret. I don’t think KHR ever thought about letting Kim Woong inherit the company as she has an image to maintain to the public, but she does let the company funds flow to his account by purchasing his paintings. That’s the way she provides for him. If JKB had left Kim Woong alone, she probably will not have planned to kill him off. JKB also threatened to kill KW, so for KW it’s either kill or be killed. KHR was surprised KW did the kill instead of Hwang.

KHR was angry with ES because she lied to her about not being pregnant. When she hang up the phone, we see that she is also holding the same USG scan that ES has. Of course she wouldn’t want an heir to JKB because that means she won’t get to keep the company, so yes, greed also plays a role in her evil maneuvers.

You’re spot on with the reasons why WJ is having a hard time connecting with SM again. She definitely can see and feel JM’s love for her but not from SM.

@abs-oluteM thanks for alerting me about this drama 😘 If it wasn’t for you, I probably would have missed this gem. It got a 10/10 from me, haha, I enjoyed every episode. And yes the child actress playing WJ did her part really well. Her soft cries when she found out who ES really is, and then her awkwardness when she met ES gaze during the karaoke session. She is good. I will surely be watching out for her future dramas.

I haven't been around to comment much on this drama after the initial episodes, but wanted to comment on the ending. Wow, that was an emotional roller coaster of an ending. Each scene seemed laden with emotions, from JM's parents telling ES to think of them as her parents to JM finding out that ES had made arrangements for the hospital to deal with her corpse if she's a table death which leads him to tell the truth to WJ only to find out that WJ had been aware that she was adopted already to JM and ES's affirmation of their love for each other to WJ finally calling ES "mom" and their meet in their dreams with the firefly spark. All the scenes are both sad and happy.

And, then that final reveal where ES and JM are clearly going to the cemetery with funereal flowers and wearing mourning clothes, it was designed to make you think that ES had not made it out of surgery after all. If ES had died and after a year had passed, WJ and JM would have tried for some sense of normalcy of routine so their actions didn't reflect if ES was dead or alive. In a way, I thought it was a cheap trick after a drama that was pure melodrama but was honest with the emotions it managed to convey and have viewers feel. I think when they were in the car, I started wondering about it, and whether it was going to be a trick of some kind where they ratchet up tension by letting viewers think that ES might have died, only to reveal that ES, JM, and WJ are a happy family actually. As such, that final moment felt flat for me because it seemed like such an obvious trick, after all of the heavy emotional investment of the final 2 episodes.

Just finished watching with subs... and I cried rivers again... hahaa...

This really is a beautiful drama about the power of a mother’s love. We see two extreme ends of what mothers will do for their child.

It was an interesting compare and contrast between KHR and ES in terms of a mother's love and how far a mother might go to protect her child. I think their respective love for their children were both fierce, but as @abs-oluteM pointed out, KHR's love wasn't for the son that we thought we knew at the start of the drama.

KHR was surprised KW did the kill instead of Hwang.

I also don't think that KHR would have messed with JKB if he had not gone after KW, explicitly threatening him. I also think that KW, hearing his mother defend him to KJB, decided that he would have to kill him for his safety and his mother's safety.

The heir to a company is a pretty big issue, so that KW would not have been able to be named heir apparent. Of course, KHR could have had a long game in mind where KW would climb the corporate ladder and eventually be in position to take over if the Board of Directors ever demanded more professional management than the addict KJB could provide. I think KHR's first thought was to get money to her birth son and set him up to be financially well off by paying him as an artist. It was probably her greed to keep her son near that had him take the position as her secretary.

Anyway, trick or not, I was relieved to see them be a happy family at the end. My apologies for not posting on the thread, but I've enjoyed the posts and thank you all very much for them.

Thank you @UnniSara and @ktcjdrama @LaLa for opening up this thread, doing recaps and translation :taebtsthanks:

So relieved to find that the drama ended with a happy ending. Same with some of you, i almost thought that the writer killed ES when I watched those last scenes. I'd love to see more how they live their lives together as a happy family (along with the awesome in laws) instead of just ending it with the scene in the cemetery. But oh well...again at least we got our happy ending yayyy.

So still no remorse whatsoever came from KHR. She stayed evil until the end. Actually to be fair..almost all the baddies in this drama stayed bad until the end with the exception of Mr Yoon who was remorseful since early on in the drama (and sadly got killed in the end T_T).

I'm just happy to see Yoon Jeong Hoon in a drama again (the only drama I watched with him in it was Vampire Prosecutor). And hope to see him again in next project with a different character to play (and hopefully it's not the 100sth ep drama).

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. It's been an enjoyable ride.

@SnowBlob Chingu I loved love Vampire Prosecutor. This is the only Kdrama where the series should have had a least 4 season. The storyline was awesome, the cast was brilliant. Thank you for watching it with me. Forgot to mention you

Is there any way we can have a rewatch of Vampire Prosecutor with Yoon Jeong Hoon as Male lead. He was a sexy Vampire and so perfect for it. @LaLa @ktcjdrama @abs-oluteM this would certainly have you crushing on YJH.

As a rule I'm not a fan of makjangs but this was a good one. As expected it had its twists and turns every step of the way right to the end. I started this because of Yeon Jung-hun who doesn't do a lot of dramas that's up my alley... and needless to say I adored his Kang Ji-min here. I can't say my ovaries exploded but my heart did flip flops every single time he smiled. Honestly I could watch the show just to see his facial expressions reserved entirely for the two most important women in his life. That family dynamic was brilliantly cast and worked so convincingly. It's not hard to believe that these three people could easily be a family. The kid that played Woo-ju was terrific... I'm almost always amazed at where they find these talented kids. Even the chubby boy that likes  her and her besties were really good.

Episodes 15 and 16 should satisfy most. Nobody really watches makjangs for creativity or inventive storytelling. We all know, more or less what's coming but it doesn't make the resolution less satisfying unless of course the baddies get a slap on the wrist. Here, there's no such thing. The wrath of heaven makes it way there. The final act was a reasonable pay-off for all the wicked ways of Kim Ho-ran and the suffering she inflicted on Eun-su and her loved ones. To be honest I could have done without the transplant issue on top of all the pile on. But the show wants to sledgehammer home the immensity of mother's love so they felt obligated to given Eun-so one more hurdle to jump over to prove that blood is really thicker than water.

Kim Ho Ran's initial confession made no sense to me whatsoever. Why would she suddenly decide to turn herself in and give some half-baked reason about the fact that she lost all affection for Jeon Ki-beom because he turned into a highly absorbed junkie. I didn't buy it. Plus she gave up rather too easily considering how tenacious she'd been. Therefore it came as no great surprise that Kim Woong was her son. The only I hadn't anticipated was that he was Kim Hyang-gi, the artist.

It's true to say that KHR was a tragic figure. In the Shakespearean sense. It's hard to feel pity for her despite the fact that she had a hard time in her domestic dealings. Ultimately... this is what makjangs are good at pointing to... she fell victim to her own machinations and way of life, reaping what she'd sown. She was an ambitious woman who was caught up in the hubris of believing she could control every aspect of her life to the point of thinking that she could even get away with murder. She cleverly cultivated an entire facade as a corporate philanthropist when her private life was a complete shambles. From where I'm looking, this facade was what she treasured most... even more than her sons until... she realised too late that being a mother should probably have been her priority. The entire edifice of her life crumbled in an instant. It makes no sense to me still that she had JKB whacked. She could have demanded that he go to rehab. But I'm convinced protecting her image took precedence over everything else in her life. She was obsessed with keeping up with appearances to the point that she had no qualms destroying someone else's life to do so. She believed herself to be queen... and we should never forget how she almost ruined Eun-su's life completely so that her public image would remain intact.

It took her awhile but Se Mi finally did the right thing and acknowledged that her time with Ji-min and Woo-joo had come and gone. Somebody had to be the crazy third party... for a while... the eyeliner said it all. I didn't really buy her "I want to get back together" act for the most part. It always seemed to me that she was just jealous that someone could make Ji-min all doey-eyed again. Life's no fairy tale for every one.

One niggly thing... I know that Ji-min was an experienced investigative reporter from way back but all throughout the second half, it occurred to me more than once that Ji-min is a better detective than the cops.  :GengarCool: He did more than his due and he was completely motivated for love of ES... and Woo-ju. A great and wonderful man who was kept in cold storage until such time when ES returned and went looking for her daughter. :smug:

@SnowBlob Chingu I loved love Vampire Prosecutor. This is the only Kdrama where the series should have had a least 4 season. The storyline was awesome, the cast was brilliant.

Spoiler

I'll put this in spoiler as it is about Vampire Prosecutor. It's been so long since I last watched it.. I couldn't even remember there are two seasons of it until you mentioned about this drama should be having 4 seasons LOL. 8 years ago was the second season so YJH was 8 years younger then. I remember he looked really handsome and while he's still handsome here..but I can tell he's no longer that 8-year-younger-YJH ehemmm...

Thank you @abs-oluteM for posting previews etc. In that final BTS, YJH seems to be an easygoing, easy-to-laugh person. :hearties: Just a slight different than his persona in 1n2d :D

This.... is just too funny! :PsyWhat: Although I noticed for some reasons almost all the female characters in this drama did have somehow thick-ish eyeliner .... but the most prominent ones were (I must say) Se Mi and KHR (KHR's liner might not be as thick but it's def accentuated by her opening her eyes shooting arrows and all kind of evils through them. :shocked2:
