Tale of the Secret Royal Inspector and Jo Yi | 어사조이뎐 [2021]

Recommended Posts

Done 5 episodes. So far so good. It's light and quite funny. The case also moves pretty fast. Each episodes RYO and his secret investigstion team got new clues that lead them close to the mystery of the late crown prince. His death isn't caused by just a disease.

The secret investiagation team might look unreliable but they did good job so far. I hope they will solve more cases and catch the real villain behind all of it.

Kim Hye Yoon And 2PM’s Taecyeon Only Have Eyes For Each Other In “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”

Nov 28, 2021 by S. P

tvN’s “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” released some romantic stills from the upcoming episode!

“Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” is a historical comedy drama starring Taecyeon as Ra Yi Eon, a young gourmand who is appointed a secret royal inspector against his will. Kim Hye Yoon co-stars as Kim Jo Yi, a divorce woman searching for happiness who joins forces with him as he travels undercover to local provinces to uncover corruption.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, the investigation squad infiltrated the headquarters of the Soyang Merchants, disguising themselves as traveling entertainers and obtaining the account book after expertly evading Park Tae Seo’s (Lee Jae Kyoon‘s) trap. The episode ended with a heart-fluttering moment between Kim Jo Yi and Ra Yi Eon, leading viewers to look forward to the next episode.

Amidst the energetic dancing taking place in the new stills, Kim Jo Yi takes Ra Yi Eon’s hand and leads him into the fray with a smile. The pair pay no attention to the noisy atmosphere surrounding them as they get lost in each other’s eyes. Ra Yi Eon reaches his arms out past Kim Jo Yi, gazing at her intently as if he were about to lean in for a kiss.

However, the person he suddenly wraps his arms around is not Kim Jo Yi, but rather Yook Chil (Min Jin Woong), who looks down at him with a comedic grin. Ra Yi Eon’s surprised look suggests that he has been tricked, and viewers are left wondering if his romance with Kim Jo Yi will be able to stay on track.

They ended up in a trap, but the investigation team was one step ahead with a wonderful trick that allowed them to occupy the home. In addition, viewers were excited to see the blossoming romance between Ra Yi Eon and Kim Jo Yi.

4 Reasons Why “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” Should Be On Your Winter Watchlist

Nov 28, 2021 by shalini

The zany posters for “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”‘ promised fun and cheer with a dash of political intrigue, and the drama sure has delivered. Taecyeon and Kim Hye Yoon delight in this fun comedy that steers just far enough from overt grimness to be a breezy watch. Eye candy aside, here are some reasons for why “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” should be on your winter watchlist!

Note: the below is spoiler-free so read without fear!

1. The reluctant hero

Spoiler

Ra Yi Eon (Taecyeon) would really rather not be a royal inspector. So it’s a rather rude awakening when he goes from spending his days creating magnificent culinary creations to the applause of his two menservants Yook Chil (literally 67) (Min Jin Woong) and Goo Pal (literally 98) (Park Kang Sub) to being assigned the most deadly job a clerk of the Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors) can have.

Royal inspectors are in charge of ferreting out corruption (or rather enabling it, depending on how the wind blows), which often results in a painful death. Thus, Ra Yi Eon decides to eschew justice altogether and treat the job as a food tour across Joseon. Naturally, this doesn’t work out as planned. What’s so fun about his character is that he’s genuinely an ordinary guy. There’s nothing flashy to him per se. He’s no swoony muscle man (the character of course, not Taecyeon!), no medical genius, or Sherlock 2.0. The comedy isn’t overplayed to make him goofy, and he comes across as a levelheaded, slightly shy man who’d do anything to just chill. Of course we have a secret past and an explanation for why he is that way, but that’s for the show to impart!

2. The feisty divorcee

Spoiler

Kim Jo Yi (Kim Hye Yoon) has had it with men and their mothers. After being married for far too long in her opinion, she petitions the local magistrate for a divorce with the support of all the town’s women. Save her mother-in-law of course. Chance and some skullduggery have her running into our royal inspector where she’s promptly smitten and furious that she’s smitten, so she treats him like she’d treat any other man, by being blunt and keeping her distance.

Refreshingly, despite the whole meet-cute with Yi Eon, Jo Yi’s priority is herself and her freedom. The strip of cloth cut from a man’s clothing and granted to his ex-wife upon a divorce is called a nabi, a homonym for butterfly in Korean. Like a butterfly, she wants nothing more than to set out into the world and forge her own destiny, no matter where it takes her. It’s a real bother then that she keeps getting unwittingly embroiled in other people’s problems.

Jo Yi is hilariously blunt and smart as a whip, often coming up with solutions before those around her have even noticed the problem. Thus, it’s all the more frustrating for her to be stuck in a town that she can talk circles around. She has her flaws, of course: a dash of recklessness, an inability to bite her tongue even if it would serve her, and more good intentions than are often helpful. But Kim Hye Yoon’s smile lights up the screen, making her a delight to watch.

3. The dry humor

Spoiler

If you thought this show’s humor would verge on campy, think again! There definitely are a few of those moments, but much of the humor is actually quite dry, resulting on wordplay and situational humor than body humor or tired gags. It feels like a much less campy version of “Strongest Chil Woo” (for everyone who still remembers that drama). The characters take what they see and run with it without overdoing the moment. It’s hard not to smile along especially because Yi Eon’s exasperated face never gets old, as does the way this nobleman gets reduced to sheer panic around Jo Yi at times.

Classic sageuk tropes are used and cleverly played with. The bad guys aren’t bumbling idiots and see right through our inspector’s plans at times but then fail to catch other traps in other moments. Everyone’s pretty ordinary, their machinations feel hilariously flawed and human, and their jokes don’t have to try hard at all.

4. The social commentary

Spoiler

Despite all the levity, this show is still a sageuk, and that means political commentary in some way, shape, or form. We start off with a bang with divorce and go progressively darker from there. But these weighty topics are handled with a surprising degree of care, proving that comedy doesn’t have to be insulting or condescending to make a point. People in this show grit their teeth and survive. It isn’t all doom and gloom. They’re capable of laughter and joy and don’t spend their days plotting revenge.

There’s still a weariness to their days that’s palpable through the screen, and there’s no denying they’d all rather be doing something else. Yet, where most sageuks dig through the screen to wrench at our hearts with immense depictions of suffering (that are no doubt realistic), this drama chooses to show its suffering in a quieter way, no less relatable, but perhaps a little more watchable after a long day at work. “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” doesn’t paint our lead duo as the answer to Joseon’s problems but as a lens through which we viewers can see them and understand that any amelioration of these problems will always be temporary.

Bonus: The Crown Prince

The Crown Prince (Lee Joon Hyuk) is wonderful to look at. And he’s in this drama. That makes it all the more worth seeing.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a blanket, a mug of hot chocolate, and settle for a feel-good, relatable drama on navigating justice in a wild, wild world that’ll put a smile on your face. You won’t regret it!

I finished eps 5 & 6. Half-way thru eps 7.

What I like most about this show is the relationship between Yi Eon and his two servants. The best comedy comes from them. It is an  unusual master-servant tandem because they seem more like Yi Eon's partners. They do respect him , and his decisions are final but they  openly take jabs at him and says witty sarcastic things to him, or even teases him when the occasion calls for it . Yi Eon is good natured enough to accept it , and in some ways indulges them. I love the trust they have both ways.

The romance is not the heart fluttery sort but I think what makes it work is that they respect each other . For one, she sees his intelligence and kindness. He is not only capable of thinking out of the box, he is a man ahead of his time . They were all surprised to see him take over the kitchen and cook for everyone; something that most noble men will not do. He is clearly winning her over. And ever since that pretend kiss, the attraction is mutual. He appreciates her guts and courage , and they do make great partners.

What I like least is the villain or villains, and unfortunately a decent amount of time is spent on them. They all seem rather caricature and there's a subplot -  power tug of war between the main villain and his brother. The main villain is the adopted son to an important official , and his real son does not like the main villain. Nevertheless , they are all crooks stealing from the King's grain tax collection.

Taecyeon Gets Jealous At The Appearance Of Cha Hak Yeon As Kim Hye Yoon’s Close Friend In “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”

Dec 5, 2021 by C. Hong

tvN has previewed Cha Hak Yeon’s upcoming appearance in “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”!

“Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” is a historical comedy drama starring Taecyeon as Ra Yi Eon, a young gourmand who is appointed a secret royal inspector against his will, and Kim Hye Yoon as Kim Jo Yi, a divorced woman searching for happiness. Together, the two travel undercover to local provinces and expose corruption.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, Ra Yi Eon was thought to be dead after having rescued Kim Jo Yi. Unable to find his body, a funeral is held without it, and the secret royal inspector’s investigation team is sadly disbanded. News of Ra Yi Eon’s death even spread throughout the palace. Park Seung (Jung Bo Suk) blames the secret royal inspectors’ deaths on his political opponent Dae Je Hak (Park Choong Sun) and demands that he be dismissed from office. When Ra Yi Eon reappears, he throws everything into chaos.

Viewers are especially curious about Ra Yi Eon and Kim Jo Yi’s reunion after his miraculous revival. In the new stills, Ra Yi Eon spots Kim Jo Yi having a sparkling conversation with her “male best friend,” Choi Seung Yool (Cha Hak Yeon). He is shocked to see them having drinks together in the daytime, and quickly becomes jealous of Choi Seung Yool’s handsome looks and warm and sweet behavior toward Kim Jo Yi. It turns out that Choi Seung Yool and Kim Jo Yi are friends who grew up in the same hometown, and one still shows the pair’s relationship before she married and left for Gaehwa Valley.

2PM’s Taecyeon Has A “Hidden Card” Up His Sleeve In “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy”

Dec 7, 2021 by E. Cha

tvN’s “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” has shared an intriguing sneak peek of its upcoming episode!

“Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” is a historical comedy drama starring 2PM’s Taecyeon as Ra Yi Eon, a young gourmand who is appointed a secret royal inspector (a government official who travels undercover to local provinces to inspect them and uncover corruption) against his will. Kim Hye Yoon stars as Kim Jo Yi, a divorced woman searching for happiness who winds up joining forces with him to investigate and battle corruption.

Spoilers

On the previous episode of “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy,” Yi Eon secretly carried out his investigations on his own while hiding the fact that he was still alive. When the distraught Jo Yi returned to Hanyang after an eventful but disappointing encounter with her long-lost mother Deokbong (Bae Jong Ok), she found Yi Eon waiting for her there—and the two shared a happy and emotional reunion.

In newly released stills from the drama’s next episode, Yi Eon is also reunited with his grandmother (played by Yang Hee Kyung), who previously wept uncontrollably when she heard the news of his death and blamed herself for pressuring him into becoming a government official.

Despite being immensely relieved to see her grandson still alive, Yi Eon’s tough grandmother also seems to be glaring at him with a look of blame, making him cower in fear as she confronts him. Meanwhile, Yook Chil (Min Jin Woong) and Goo Pal (Park Gang Sub) have their arms raised in punishment in the corner of the room, piquing viewers’ curiosity as to how the trio will be disciplined by the fierce old lady.

In other photos from the upcoming episode, Yi Eon finally begins his counterattack as a secret royal inspector, emboldened by his near-death experience and more determined than ever to deliver justice. At the palace, while all of the ministers are prostrating themselves before the king, Yi Eon alone stands tall as he faces the monarch head-on.

Notably, Park Seung (Jung Bo Suk)—who seemed to fear nothing—wears a tense expression of alarm as he lowers his eyes to the ground, raising the question of what “hidden card” Yi Eon might have acquired while faking his own death that could bring even the arrogant Park Seung to his knees.

The producers of “Secret Royal Inspector & Joy” teased, “Yi Eon’s investigation will gain steam as it receives help from an unexpected individual. His breathtaking journey as he seizes the opportunity to root out corruption will deliver thrilling fun.”

I am all caught up.

So in the last couple of episodes , starting from eps 8 to be exact, they had been able to corner the big villain Park Tae Soo and his gang at his illegal silver mine , but Park Tae Soo blew it up . Long story short Yi Eon got trapped and they all thought he died. But he was able to actually find a way out of the dungeon / mine and came across Park Tae Soo etc - allowing him to secretly investigate them further.

But of course he wanted to pretend that he was dead to facilitate the investigation . Nevertheless there was great mourning all round , and most importantly JoYi felt much regret. When he finally succeeded to find evidence and bring this up to the King , he  went home to Hanyang to meet his grandmother. And of course he and JoYi also reunited , and confirmed their feelings for each other.

Image

Anyway another point of interest was that after Yi Eon's "death", JoYi and the other two girls decided to go look for her mother. But JoYi found out that her mother is the infamous Sea Goblin who does trade with all the baddies , so she was very dissappointed. Her mother also got her to leave and didn't want to reunite. However I have a feeling , the mother didn't have a choice but do this as survival after the war. She seems to have a lot of people under her care as well ( perhaps also victims of the war).

Overall, the romance here is actually not front & centre , the investigations are. But sadly it is the investigations that bore me the most, so that's why I take a while to watch the episode. What I still enjoy watching is the leads together ( not many scenes unfortunately ) and YiEon with his two servants.
