I love how The Red Sleeve team decided to go through the book, the library, and the nerdy route because King Jeongjo himself established a royal library. Also King Jeongjo has nice calligraphy as well so I think they carefully studied on their similarities so that it won't look farfetched.

2PM’s Lee Junho and Lee Se Young will share tender moments in the upcoming episode of “The Red Sleeve”!

“The Red Sleeve” is a new historical drama about the imperial romance between crown prince Yi San (played by Lee Junho), who later becomes emperor, and the strong-willed court lady Seong Deok Im (played by Lee Se Young).

Previously, Seong Deok Im found out that Yi San was not a government official but actually the crown prince. She officially became one of his court ladies, which made them spend more and more time together.

 

Newly released stills offer a glimpse of Yi San and Seong Deok Im’s blossoming relationship. In one set of photos, Seong Deok Im is no longer wearing the traditional dress of a court lady. She looks like a celestial fairy in fancy and colorful robes, and her hair is also propped up using the ornament tteoguji that is usually worn on special occasions.

 

On the other hand, Yi San’s behavior towards Seong Deok Im raises questions. Despite the fact that there are many eyes watching them, he grabs her wrist and even strokes her cheek. His gaze is deep with passion, and she stares at him wide eyes.

In the second set of stills, Seong Deok Im and Yi San share a heartfelt moment. She’s standing guard outside his bedroom door, and he’s sitting next to the door that is the only thing between them. Seong Deok Im reads a book under a dim lap, and Yi San quietly listens to her voice. His walls are completely down as his expression softens with tenderness. On the outside, she seems quite serious about her book, but she can’t help but be nervous about his reactions. Even though they’re not in the same room, their warm chemistry makes viewers hearts’ flutter.

On this day, Seong Deok-im was on the verge of death at the hands of Hong Deok-ro (Kang Hoon) while trailing  Lee San. At this time, Lee San appeared and made a low voice saying, "Stop. Are you trying to kill the Court Lady  of the Easter  Palace  without my permission?"

 

Hong Deok-ro said, "Was she? I didn't know that woman was a court lady."

 

Deok-im clearly recognized him and claimed that he tried to kill her, but Hong Deok-ro said, "I didn't recognize her because she wasn't a court lady." ( hmmm this Deok Ro is such a snake) 

 

Lee San, angry at Deok-im, who was in danger after stepping behind her, urged her, "Did you notice what kind of place you are and what I'm doing here?" Deok-im said, "I don't know, but you seem to be doing an important job." "I made a mistake. It won't happen again," she shook her head.

 

However, Lee San said, "Since when has your master been my mother? I thought you were mine. So when Princess Hwa-wan (Seo Hyo-rim) tried to attack you, I tried to stop it at all costs. Did you serve my mother, not me? "You've come to a place you shouldn't come today," he said in anger.

 

To Deok-im, who is not intimidated, Lee San ordered, "From now on, you are no longer the court lady of the Eastern Palace. Get out of the palace tomorrow." Deok-im said, "I thought that my owner, the Crown Prince , would not kill me. So I took the risk .  I thought that if I refused Hye Bin-ja (Kang Mal-geum)'s order ( his mother) , I could die. I wanted to live."

 

"I really thought you were going into the kibang ( the kisaeng parlour) . I thought that Hyebinja-nim was also worried about it. I thought that obeying her orders was the best way to do it," said Deokim. 

 

"Would I go about a life of debauchery like that? I will not lose my honor / pride  in front of the people I will rule,” he said

 

Deok-im tried to avoid the crisis , saying, "You are wonderful. I am honored to be able to serve you as my master. My heart is pounding when I think of the peaceful country  that your highness will create."

 

Lee San, who listened to Deok-im's praise, put the brakes on "Are you flattering me?" When she said, “Are you feeling a little better?” Lee San did not get angry anymore.

 

Lee San said, “From now on, you must be silent!” He took Deok-im to the place where Hong Deok-ro and other supporters were. In response to the separated words, “My Secret Palace Lady,” Hong Deok-ro spoke with a strange nuance, saying, “Welcome to being a member of the Dongduk Association.”

 

"Never be surprised," he warned his servants discussing affairs, "I need someone to run an errand, so I called her."

Deok-im greeted Buma who recognized her. Hong Deok-ro (Kang Hoon) welcomed Deok-im to become a member of the Dong-duk Association, and asked Lee San if she could know more about his identity. At that, Lee San explained that he was holy, and Hong Deok-ro smiled.

 

While returning to the palace, Lee san escaped from the guards and was left alone with Deok-im. Lee San said that he had something to buy and went to the bookstore and bought several books. Lee San said, “Read one book a month, copy the sentences you don’t know, and bring them with you. I will teach you the meaning.”

 

 

Deok Im thanked  him  for giving a light punishment, Lee San said, “It’s a punishment (for him!) . I'm going to give away these precious books and teach you the difficult stuff myself, so who is paying  for it?"

 

Seong Deok-im, who argued with Lee San, called him a Confucian scholar and said, “I  have  made a mistake. Please forgive me.”

 

At that, Lee San said, “Even when I said I could kill you, you weren’t afraid. Now I know why. In your mind, I am still the humble lecturer  of that time. Why did I pretend to be a lecturer and deceive you? At first, it was cumbersome to correct your misunderstanding. After a while, I didn't want to tell the truth. Because the time I spent with you in that library was special. While I was with you in that library, I thought you were being swayed by me. But now I don't know. Did you really? have you been swayed by me Or have I been swayed by you?” he asked.

Embarrassed, Seong Deok-im dropped the book, and Lee San ordered her to return to the palace first and moved on.

Hong Deok-ro, who summoned Deok-im, who was practicing for the ceremony, asked if she was very upset with him. Seong Deok-im took it lightly and moved on, but Hong Deok-ro said, “Aren’t you being too wary of me? Ever since then, I've been contemplating whether to build a friendship. Because we have to risk our lives together for the sake of our master. Like it or not, we are comrades in the same boat. What do you think of Lee Son thought of you ? There is only one way to understand what you did last night.”

 

Seong-deok-im responded to the question of why he was asking about the Crown Prince's heart, and Hong Deok-ro said that he would go if she had no intention of answering. In response, Deok-im said, “Aren’t you curious about my heart? What do I think of him?” and Hong Deok-ro, “What’s so important about that? No one cares about the court lady’s heart,” he said coldly and moved on.

 

Seongdeok-im, who was walking alone, said, 'If you pull, you have to go, if you push, you have to go away. I don't have a thought or a will. That's the life of a court lady,' she thought. Deok-im, who returned, was questioned by her colleagues as to why she was called to see Hong Deok-ro. She escaped the crisis by lying that Crown Prince  asked her to find a book to write in.

On this day, King (Yeongjo)  (Lee Deok-hwa) smiled at Lee San (Lee Joon-ho)'s cheerful solution to a difficult problem. He said, "The Crown Prince doesn't disappoint me. This difficult thing is special. I think he looks a lot like me.  Do you all think so, too?" he asked the officials who where there. 

When his servants praised Lee San, King Yeongjo, who smiled, said, "Lee San is definitely has military leadership  ." I think it's okay for him to replace the me now. What do you think? You all think so, right? “As expected, our Lee San,” he laughed.

Princess Hwawan (Seo Hyo-rim) did not believe that King Yeongjo had given Lee San approval to replace him . ( she was not happy of course) 

 

 

Hong Jung-yeo (Cho Hee-bong) met Head Court Lady Jo  (Park Ji-young) . The two clearly are conspiring for Lee San not to be King

 

Jo said  "I will definitely dethrone Lee San and raise another royal descendant who will become the king on the throne. The young boy Lee San will soon became a young man. Every time I see him, I shudder. Maybe he resembled his dead father. When will he become a madman like his father? The mad prince killed more than a hundred royal palace servants. After being beaten by the Crown Prince, their bones were broken and their flesh exploded, and they could not overcome the pain and committed suicide. Every morning I go to the main hall and look up at the beams. I was prepared in my mind that a white cloth might be hanging on me. All the things the Crown Prince did as a madman does not go away just because years passed. Lee San should never be king. The son of a sinner cannot be king.”

Ep 4 Spoiler recaps ( final part)

 

After returning to the palace, Lee San said, 'What are you doing? Did you read the book I gave you? Did you think of me while reading that book?' He missed Deokim. At that moment, Lee San discovered that it was Deok Im  wearing a gyere suit and ran to her  in shock.

“Why did you raise your head, why are you wearing this? ” said Lee San-eun, grabbing Deok-im’s hand. (He thought she was going to be his grandfather's concubine) . When Hong Deok-ro followed and announced that it was a ceremonial practice  for court ladies, Lee San was embarrassed and released Deok-im's hand.

Hye-bin (Kang Mal-geum), who saw the court ladies coming to the Donggung Palace to serve food, saw Deok Im and thought of something. Hyebin asked Lee San not to be possessed by a court lady, saying, “Do you know how important this is?”

Lee San said, “I have  never been close to a court lady. I have no intention of having a woman of low status by my side. Only women from prestigious colleges and universities deserve to be by my side.”  Deokim who was in front of him had to hear this.

As soon as he stepped in, Lee-san was surprised to see that there was Deok Im instead of another court lady , who was originally supposed to come in. Lee San, who knew this was Hye-bin's work, told Deok-im, "Be  good  and take care of me. I will definitely become King, and I will repay you for your devotion.” Deok-im, who came out of the Donggung Palace, said, “Who said I wanted to become a concubine? ” She poured out her anger that ruined the ceremony.

Meanwhile, Hwa-wan (Seo Hyo-rim) and Jeong Hu-gyeom (Kwon Hyun-bin) announced that they had found evidence that Lee San was behaving suspiciously . Yeongjo (Lee Deok-hwa), enraged, issued a ban on Lee San where he was not allowed to step out of the palace or even read.

Deok-im, surprised by the command.  Deok-im, who was standing outside the room, recited a verse from 'Si-kyung" for him to hear

Lee San said, “Continue reading. I want to hear your voice,” he asked Deokim.  “Do you know the meaning when you read it?”, Lee San comforted her heart by memorizing the verses that Deok-im read together.

However, at this time, King Yeongjo came in furiously, saying, “Jung Seung-ji has found proof !” “On the first day of every month, the knights who had to stand on the bench went out of the palace. They were escorting you! Did you go to Kibang?” said Yeongjo. 

“San-ah, you can’t be like your father!” said Yeongjo, mercilessly hitting Lee San. “I can fix it!” said Yeongjo, assaulting Lee San as feeling angry with  him, and then left.

Deok-im, who heard all the scenes, tried to comfort Lee San, but said, “Just stay by my side. That's it," he said, heartbreaking. “Today is not the first time,” said Deok-im and surprised Lee San as she entered the room.

In response to Deokim's promise of "I'll protect you", Lee San said absurdly, "On the subject of a court lady." Deok-im did not care and said, “I am a low level person. This is a person of lower level who will not leave your side for the rest of your life and will only protect you. I will protect you until the day my life runs out.”

My heart breaks for San.  From what I can comprehend, the Deceased Crown Prince was maybe  Schizophrenic.  The insanity behavior has everyone expecting San to turn out this way.  At this point, I think Princess Hwa is schizophrenic herself.  Her goal to dethrone San doesn’t make sense.  Give a big plus to the actress….her expression makes my skin crawl. After Court Lady Jo explained  what happened in the past, I understand why people were against San.  However San is fine and hasn’t really been given the opportunity to show what he is worth.  
 

 I had a good laugh, when bodyguard said He was embarrassed of San acting like a fool, around Deok Im   When San had the conversation with Lady Hye about marriage, It was interesting to see both sides reaction when the curtain pulled back.

 

My bad vibe about Deok Ro remaining same.  He is a traitor.  I hope San will realize this soon.  Cuz getting the feeling poop will hit the ceiling soon.

I never thought about that side of why people are against San for the throne. I knew it was about Sado and his crimes and being labelled as a criminal's son. but I guess it goes beyond that and it does make sense.

Seeing/reading how Prince Sado was they can't have a monarch be the same type of person with his manic ways, especially with klling and even said to have raped court ladies under him. And even though San has not displayed any of that tendency Sado descent does leave such a very strong and lasting impression. His morality or the right way not only comes in question but his judgement, and if he becomes a monarch and he is the the same as Sado, no one would be safe, he could probably kill minister with just any reason imaginable.

At the time when mental illness if not understood (heck even now mental illness is still such a taboo to talk about in eastern countries, so I can just imagine how it was then.), and where sins and morality of parents are inherited by the children, San has a lot on his plate. Thus being the perfect heir is a must, there can never be a crack in his judgement and morality and mentality. for the most parts I think his grandfather King Yeongjo is proud of him and want him to succeed him no matter what.

Princess Hwahwan is such an interesting character. I like her. she is so out there in her intensions. I think in history it was said that after she was widowed, King Yeongjo asked her to live closer to the palace and that is when she started getting into the politics of things. I think being her at that time is mightily powerful. To be a woman and have that much sway with the king and having minister going to her for whatever would probably go to anyone's head.

Kyaaaa, we have a love confession already!!  Only 20 minutes in and I am so excited with what happened. He saved her, defended her against evil lying Deok Ro, and brought her along into the meeting. He knew all her background even her besties names. I really love the part where he got so angry defending himself to be an upright person worthy to be the king. Junho is really good there, raising his voice with power yet not shouting, and his Saguek tone is so nice to listen to. Then he gifted her with books and then came the confession! I love him!! And it’s so cool when he left (because he is flustered of course) his bodyguards just suddenly appeared by his side.
 

Okay, back to continue the episode.

I just finished episode 5. Crack up so much at Deok Im changing tune and started sucking up to Yi San Love San's expression as it was unexpected. Deok Im is so smart LOLOL. All that anger immediately evaporated . It was also funny that he was so thrilled to share the books he likes with Deok Im (typical action when one is interested at another person and excited to share what they love to the people they like) only for Deok Im to interpret it as a punishment HAHAHA. And yes to the confession so soon already and all his actions point to confirm where his heart lies. I'd think he would want to conceal it for the sake of himself and her safety... hmm.

 

How awful it would be if the person you love became your grandfather's woman and your legal mother. I supposed thinking of it this way I could relate and understand at that moment why San freaks out and made a fool of himself.

 

I'm a bit confused about the scene of a dead guard. I had my eyes wide open for every episode, what did I miss about this? And why did San not slept for over 3 days for it?

 

It was insightful to have the perspectives of the Head Court Lady and Ministers to help us better understand why they did not want San to be King. There seems to be some controvesies in Crown Prince Sado's historical record because most of it had been destroyed however he did seem to have mental health issue and if he did commit murder/crime then I don't quite understand why there is a statement in Wikipedia indicating Yi San spent much of his time during his reign to clear Sado's name. Or was he trying to claim his crimes were committed under insanity/mental illness and should be excused?

 

The last scene was so impactful and well-performed by Jun Ho. It showed how lonely San is in the palace. No doubt based on history Yeongjo is a strict character (though by impression may not be as strict as Sukjong) however Yeongjo suffers some hardships himself before he became King and during his reign I therefore understand the pressure he has as King — which led him to be strict on Sado and even more on San because of Sado's actions.

 

I'm really enjoying the loveline between San and Deok Im at the moment. I guess this part is always be the most interesting chapter in terms of relationships. In previous episode San has said some hurtful stuff dismissing the servants/court ladies to Deok Im, which I felt offended on Deok Im's behalf since I'm seeing it from a modern person's perspective. However seeing how whipped he is now, forcing himself to say opposite things to his mother, he can deny all he wants but Deok Im is not a nobody to him. The line where he said to Deok Im "You do not know where my heart lies and I don't know who your heart" became even more poignant.
