Spoiler recaps for ep 12 (part 1/2)

Yeong-jo (Lee Deok-hwa) is suffering from dementia, so he mistook Lee San (Jun-ho) for Crown Prince Sado and calls him Lee Seon. Lee San is concerned that ministers who know Yeongjo's physical condition are trying to harm the relationship between him and Yeongjo. Seong Deok-im (Lee Se-young) tells Jung-jeon the existence of the truth document Geum-dong-ji  and asks him to protect Lee San.

After hearing about Seongdeok-im, Queen Jung-jeon goes to royal hall and meets Yeong-jo. Je Sang-gung (Park Ji-young), worried that Lee San will ascend to the throne, visits it too  and says, "Deok Im lied and deceived the Queen." Seongdeokim risked her life to explain the day Crown Prince Sado died and made Yeongjo remember the promise.

Yeongjo regains his memory and finds the document hidden in the wall behind his throne and takes it out. Yeongjo burst out crying, "Blood-stained red ginseng, I regret it." Instead of killing the crown prince like that, I promised that he would surely rise to the throne alive,” he said. Upon learning of the promise between Yeongjo and Crown Prince Sado, Lee San sobs silently, and Yeongjo calls Princess Hwawan (played by Seo Hyo-rim) and orders her to deliver the royal seal. Princess Hwawan resists, but in the end she handed over the scepter/ royal seal  to Lee-san, and Lee-san ascended the throne.

Spoilers recaps for Eps 12 Part 2 / 2

Deok-im waited for San in the Byeol-dang. Deok-im, who said, "I waited because I wanted to see Your Highness," was worried about the wound on Lee San's hand. Lee San said, "You are the only one who worried about my  wounds today. I thought you would be here if you thought of me as I thought of you."

Lee San, who has already made up her mind, said, "There are many things I need to ask you and listen to, but I will tell you my heart later. I will listen to your thoughts later."

Upon the appointment  of Lee San, Court Lady Jo decided to die, saying, "I failed, so I will take responsibility." She showed her feelings for Yeong-jo, saying, "It was stupid revenge. I hated Young-bin," was sentenced to return home instead of the death penalty.

However, Jo killed herself in front of Yeongjo .

Jeong Baek-ik (Kwon Hyun-bin) begged Lee San, "I will die instead. Please save my mother," and Princess Hwawan cried.

Yeongjo left a will to Isan. "First of all, as a king, you will kill hundreds of thousands of people. Whether you want it or not, you have to take someone's life. Do what you have to do. That's the fate you have to endure."

Then, as a grandfather, he said, "Forgive this old man. I made a mistake, but I always did my best. Forgive me now. San-ah. Now you are the king of Joseon." When Yeongjo saw the vision of the deceased Crown Prince Sado, he left the words, "I kept my promise, bastard, right?" and died.

At Yeongjo's death, Lee San said, "It's all because of my father, my grandmother. I can't forgive you. Please come back." He said, "I'm afraid and it's hard to breathe."

Despite the changes to come, Deok-im said, "No matter what other people think, if you can live the way you want, wouldn't that be happiness? .

Lee San, who has became the new King, sits on the throne and is determined to bear everything, saying, "I am so scared and afraid that I cannot even breathe. I will never hide or run away. From now on, everything is my responsibility."

At the time when Lee San was consolidating his position as a king after the three-year tribute mourning  to the previous king, Lee San said to Deok-im, "I want to keep you by my side. I want you to be a concubine, not a court lady." Lee San, who gave her time to think, expressed her heart by saying, "Deok-im, I want to be a family with you. ( have a family with you)

Quote

EP 11 – 12

  • Never thought that I would be crying over Yeongjo-Sado again, but here I am…one can only imagine what San feels when he is continuously being doubted by his grandfather, yet he is still keeping himself under control. Yeongjo’s mind is probably befuddled with regret, so much that he mistakes San as the son he got rid of himself. The death of Sado is forever a mark which cannot be erased in both Yeongjo and San’s life, but in the end, Yeongjo’s final words remain, “I did so many wrongs, but I did my best.” Not everything he did was right, but maybe, it was the best decision he could come up as the king.
  • The way Deok-ro using the analogy of Taejong-Taejo for San-Yeongjo reminded me of the time when Yeongjo himself viewed as Taejong who hid all Sejong’s books like how he did to San. Taejong, the king who killed his own half-brother and caused his father Taejo to give up the throne. He was also the king who deposed his own son from the Crown Prince’s position and chose his third son as the next king, killing his in-laws in the process in order to prepare a smooth ground for the reign of Sejong. Almost 400 years difference, yet some things hardly change.
  • Although we seldom see Sado himself in this drama, his presence is as strong as ever, hovering in the background when it comes to the relationship between San and Yeongjo. The usage of geumdeungjisa here is not as a confession, but as a guarantee letter in securing San’s safety and future. Oh, one can only imagine how suffocating it is to have such an unfortunate family history….
  • Who wouldn’t miss a chance to show her presence and influence? Certainly not the Queen, who has been living without any real power due to lack of child or political influence surrounding her. Deok-im sure knows how to ruffle her feathers, enticing the Queen into taking the position of being San’s saviour. It is certainly worth anticipating to see what kind of Dowager she will become after San becomes the king.
  • Court Lady Jo’s end leaves me wondering how will everything be different should Yeongjo did choose her instead. Perhaps, she might not be as bitter as she is in the present and the secret group might not be as active as it is. But then, there will always be someone who is there to protect their interest, despite not being directly associated with the king like she was. How will her successor fare? Wol-hye, my eyes are on you…
  • Despite the focus on the throne this week, we get to see Deok-im pouring her heart out and talking about her real feelings. She puts herself as the top priority, but at heart, there is also her sincere feeling of carrying out her duties as a court maid, including supporting her master in whatever way she can. San’s change in status – from being in the most unstable position as the heir to the king’s throne – will also stir a change in Deok-im’s life goal; now that San is a king who has the power in his hands, how will Deok-im’s presence be of any help to him? Will she get to live in peace now that San has everything? And the most important question: will her own heart be at ease? Loving a king is indeed a difficult path to walk on; there is no way he will belong solely to her, for he is a king and father of the whole nation first before her partner in life.
  • All hail to the new king, who has endured everything under the sun to become the sun himself.

  • Thanks 1

@suhodorable Oh nooo ahahaahah...so is the kiss not going to come through then. I am going to be so sad. It's killing me since the bath scene all the sizzling tension and attraction they have for each other. By the way does Deok Im seem sad now that he has ascended? She seems less cheerful?

She does.

But I think it was really naïve of her to think that everything will stay the same. Even Boknyeo left the palace, so the 3 years with San ascending must have thrown them some definite changes in their life. Much like how it is with adulting in our modern times.

Though personally it is more pronounced when it comes when she is in the presence of the King.

I think they can't be go back to the time that she can easily joke around with him or laugh.

He is King now, and protocols would probably be rigidly followed. I think San would have probably changed first in his interaction with her, mainly because any and all of his action would be highly scrutinized. Plus the responsibilities would have been so heavy for him, as can be seen as foreshadowing withKing Yeongjo's advise to him over the years, as well as his monologue as he started to sit on the dragon chair for the first time

and with that, I think DeokIm also started to follow protocol, and also distanced and proper. and also sad.

2PM’s Lee Junho And Lee Se Young Keep The Mood Lighthearted While Filming Their Emotional Confession Scene In “The Red Sleeve”

Dec 23, 2021 | by S. Cho

MBC has shared a behind-the-scenes look at Episodes 11 and 12 of “The Red Sleeve”!

“The Red Sleeve” is a historical drama about the imperial romance between crown prince Yi San (played by Lee Junho), who later becomes emperor, and the strong-willed court lady Seong Deok Im (played by Lee Se Young).

The making-of clip starts with Lee Se Young practicing her lines and adorably imitating a puppy. Soon after, the puppy they’re working with arrives, and both Lee Se Young and Junho have lots of fun showering it with affection. Lee Se Young comments, “I can film for another 12 hours today.”

Later, Junho is preparing a serious scene with Lee Deok Hwa. He meticulously runs over each line and movement with the director before giving his all in rehearsals, impressing the crew with his immersion into the scene. As they continue with filming, Lee Deok Hwa recites his lines perfectly in one take, earning applause from everyone on set.

Lee Se Young, Jang Hee Jin, and Seo Hyo Rim gather around Lee Deok Hwa’s script and explore all the comments he’s written on the sides. The trio jokes around as Seo Hyo Rim tells Lee Se Young, “I’ll give you San.” Lee Se Young explains to Jang Hee Jin, “I like the princess. She says she will give me the crown prince.” Jang Hee Jin mishears and hilariously asks, “The King?” Once they notice Lee Deok Hwa has returned, they quickly scurry away from his script, leaving the actor confused.

In the evening, Junho gets ready for the scene where he confesses to Lee Se Young. He discusses with the director how to elevate the scene and jokes, “Deok Im will then just make an outstanding facial expression.”

Junho comments, “This is the scene of ‘I want to become family.’ It’s a confession,” before adding in English, “Propose.” He continues, “I was nervous. She wiped my mouth and put dried ginger in my mouth.” Lee Se Young shares, “First off, I’m really nervous. I also feel excited, flustered, and awkward.” In between takes, the duo keep the atmosphere light as they make jokes with the props and poke fun at one another.

Lee Se Young adds, “Apart from everything else, it would’ve been great if he were just a regular guy [and not the King]. The King is someone who cannot drop everything just for me. I have a line like this: ‘If you give someone everything, you will want to receive everything from them.’ But the King is someone who cannot do that.”

here is an interesting read with how historical dramas are produced/written now, and historian and international fans views on it:

Historical K-dramas have some questioning what's fact and what's fiction

Spoiler

- Omitted some unrelated parts -

Currently-airing series "Secret Royal Inspector & Joy" on tvN and "Moonshine" on KBS are both set in the Joseon era but do not feature any real historical figures. And while MBC's "The Red Sleeve" does center around King Jeongjo (1752-1800) of Joseon and his concubine, it focuses on their highly-romanticized personal relationship rather than history.
Separate from their commercial success, domestic viewers largely consider such shows to simply be K-dramas in traditional costumes, not actual historical shows. Although period dramas with fictional elements have always been popular in Korea, the trend has been made more prominent as authentic historical dramas have declined in popularity and become few and far between over the years.
Especially because historical K-dramas are growing popular abroad, some express concerns about whether they really represent Korean history.

"I know there's such thing as artistic license, but I can't help but feel a little skeptical as a historian," said Ban Byung-yool, an emeritus professor of history at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. "When 'historical' dramas only deal with fictional characters and events, I fear that viewers may not take authentic history seriously or think of actual historic events as unimportant.
"I believe the purpose of a historical drama is to convey lessons from the past," he continued. "Even if certain historical figures lived centuries ago, the tribulations they went through are still quite universal and relatable. Their true stories can give messages that transcend time. But if everything is fiction, viewers are only left with romance and costumes. That's the side effect of prioritizing entertainment over history."
Professor Ban was also wary of misinformation.
"I'm not saying TV shows must be strictly factual like academic papers, but there needs to be a certain level of historical accuracy," he said. "If a show is set in the 1800s but characters behave like it's the modern times, that's anachronism. I doubt such highly fictional shows will make either domestic or foreign viewers interested in actual Korean history, and some might even take historical inaccuracies as the truth."

On the other hand, Professor Park Chan-seung of Hanyang University's Department of History had a different view on the role of period dramas.
"I expect historical dramas to promote Korean [traditional] culture rather than history," he said. "In that sense, even fictionalized historical dramas are meaningful. Complete fiction may actually be better to avoid distorting history or receiving complaints from descendants of real historical figures, which has happened quite often when they were portrayed negatively in a series. Fictional characters give screenwriters much more creative freedom."
Park also pointed out that fictional period dramas are a trend worldwide.
"We're seeing this phenomenon in Japan and the West as well," he said referring to the Netflix series "Bridgerton" (2020-). "There's no rule that historical dramas must adhere to authentic history, which tends to be too serious and unexciting. The time period can simply set the premise for an interesting story to play out."
