The other thing that is curious is that Court Lady Kim is so powerful, but it does not seem “logical” in the scheme of history.

 

@gilaswan just a hunch on this, but maybe because the restoration of Kim Je Nam's name + descendants are not in full swing, thus the properties turned over back to Bau's family is only limited to the house. Not much on land owned. 

Also, technically it is only Bau who is of a certain rank only in the government did not yet possess some significant ownership compared to Dae Hyeop who has a father with numerous connections and smuggling activities. 

 

He could be equivalent of a reinstated person with name but just like a corporate employee compared to Dae Hyeop's who is initially born as a chaebol son.

In 1995, Lee Young Ae starred in her first historical drama: “West Palace” (서궁 ) as the evil Court Lady Kim Gae Shi (? – 1623), she was Seonjo and Gwanghae’s concubine.

 

According to some historians, she wasn’t a beautiful woman, but she had many other talents and Gwanghae favored her greatly.

She was the opposite to Jang Nok Soo (with singing and dancing skills), Kim Gae Shi was smart and had a good judgment.  She was favored by Seonjo and she was appointed Sang Goong. She later served at Gwanghae’s quarters and she caught his attention too (she really had many talents!).

 

Even though she was favored by Seonjo and Gwanghae, she never had an official Concubine appointment. Gwanghae probably couldn’t do it due to her previous relationship with his father and because that would weaken his authority.

In 1592 Queen Uiin was still childless, so the ministers favored Gwanghae’s intelligence and Seonjo appointed him as Crown Prince and took Royal Refugee during the Seven Years War. Gwanghae remained in the capital taking care of the government and leading defensive battles against Japan.

 

Queen Uiin died in 1600 and Seonjo took another wife. In 1606 Queen Inmok, gave birth to a legitimate son, Prince Yeongchang, and she became Gwanghae’s political rival, Kim Gae Shi in order to keep Queen Inmok under control fueled Gwanghae’s suspicion. She was a very scheming lady at this point.

 

In 1613,  Prince Yeongchang was sent into exile and months later was murdered. His grandfather Kim Jae Nam was charged with treason and executed.

 

In 1618 Queen Inmok was stripped off her tittle and confined to the West Palace. Even though all of this was the result of the Greater Northerners faction’s ambitions, Kim Gae Shi was a very negative influence for Gwanghae and according the synopsis of this drama: “Her thirst for power led him to his downfall”.

 

 

Historians are divided about Gwanghae’s actions and character, the “Kyecg’uk ilgi” (Queen Inmok’s diary) Gwanghae was a cruel and evil King. However,  writer and scholar Kim Yong-suk concludes that Gwanghae was in fact, a wise and good King and that he couldn’t save his brother due to the inmense power of the Greater Northerners.

MBN drama 'Bossam - Stealing Destiny' (directed by Kwon Seok-jang) succeeded in winning the hearts of viewers. The nationwide viewership rating of this drama soared to 8.8% (based on Nielsen Korea), breaking the record for the channel. 

 

The success of 'Bossam' has several implications. In the meantime, before this, MBN hasn't been able to stand out in the drama field. It is also worth noting that it is a revival of the historical drama genre, which has been lost for a while. 

 

# Pushing Jung Il-woo, pulling Kwon Yu-ri

The number one contributor to 'Bossam' is by far the leading actors,  Jung Il-woo and Kwon Yuri. Due to the nature of the genre of 'romantic historical drama', it was possible to follow the sequence of success only when the two actors performed a stable historical drama together with a timely romance. The two accomplished both of these missions effectively.

 

Jung Il-woo continues to demonstrate how invincible he is in historical shows. Among actors of his age, he has a lot of experience in historical dramas. He has been in  'The Moon Embracing the Sun', 'The Return of Iljimae' and 'The Night Watchman's Journal', which had over 40% viewership ratings. These works achieved double-digit ratings. In order to express this, Jung Il-woo did not hesitate to make-up for over two hours, to effectively project an unrefined Ba Woo. 

 

The presence of his counterpart Kwon Yu-ri greatly exceeded expectations. She has already been acting in other works, but acting in historical dramas is unfamiliar to her.  ''Bossam' was seen as a difficult challenge for her.

 

But these concerns were in vain. Kwon Yuri  demonstrated a wide spectrum of acting by taking on the role of Soo-kyung, the beautiful princess in 'Bossam'. After showing off her noble energy like a princess and being "bossam"  by Ba Wu, she was able to digest the harsh image of working in a tavern to 'pay for food'. While looking at the world with an upright thought like a princess, she cared for the people of lower status and quickly adapted to her new surroundings.

 

Above all, the chemistry between Jung Il-woo and Kwon Yu-ri is the catalyst for the ratings explosion of 'Bossam'. The favorable reception of 'Bossam' continued abroad. It also scored 9.4 out of 10 in the service user evaluation. Why did the production of historical dramas decrease? First, the production cost is high. A large-scale set has to be built for historical evidence, and much more cost is invested in preparing the costumes of the cast than in modern dramas. The shooting period is also long. In addition, after the 52-hour week was implemented, the production crew's labor costs rose and the available filming time decreased, making the production of historical dramas reluctant from the standpoint of broadcasters and producers.

 

It is difficult to attract PPL (indirect advertising). The most representative PPL included in a typical modern drama are mobile phones, automobiles, coffee, cosmetics, and the like. However, it is difficult to put anything into the historical drama. Starts with SK greeting LC Lee. He asked, Left Chancellor? SK said, if not LC, who should I address you then? Since your DIL princess Hwa In is already dead. More talk, then Lee main guy drew out his sword and BW came shouting "stop", bringing along with him a bunch of villagers. They're there to get food from BW's household. WY still want to attack, and BW about to stop him, but SK took a step forward and challenged LC Lee with an ultimatum, which he didn't end up doing anything and left with his party. BW asked if she's okay. SK only turned and apologised to the people and asked them to get inside and get the rice. As they're distributing the rice, Mother came out and asked if SK is fine, SK apologised for causing a concern. Mother said even if it isn't for her, LYC is eyeing their family anyway. Mother wants her to go inside but SK kept insisting she will stay to help. Jo saw the interaction and happily ushered them to go away and she will take care of the rice distribution.

 

WY, LYC having a talk about King must know that SK is there at BW’s place. Main guy came and said King requested LYC presence. LYC asked WY to make up some excuses that he is sick, not wanting to go into palace fearing capture. He also ordered main guy to kill SK that evening. If she is dead, King has no hold against him. Cut to DY in his confinement at the storage room. Lee's main guy came and told him SK is safe for now. He asked why DY so insistent about SK, DY said they grew up together and there are affections he can never forget and not care about, don’t you have someone like that too? He was quiet but denied it. As he went out, Aunt is already outside waiting asking how DY is. He said fine, don't worry, but she still rushed inside. Aunt is clearly that someone he cannot forget and not care about. 

 

Evening time. Main guy led some men dressed in black with veils to go to BW's house. No one was there though. They're escaping already, with King's guards. But the men caught up with them. Then it's the fight scene we see in the preview. Just as BW is down and almost slashed by main guy, someone came to help him. It's DY. More fighting. Then King and his troupe came. All the other men ran away. DY helped injured main guy to leave the scene. Cut to King seated in the room with SK and BW. He asked about certain things and SK updated him calmly. King turned to BW and started scolding BW. SK apologised for what happened. King asked BW to leave the room since he has something to say to SK. King asked if SK still resenting him. Some talks with King tearing up. Then it's the pre-released scene of SK asking for marriage approval, and King not approving. SK wants to live as a regular person, because she is "dead" but she wants to live. King asked if BW is the one to give her ideas about the marriage. SK told King she loves BW genuinely. We don't get to hear what happened. Cut to King going outside where BW is standing, King gave him stern instruction to protect and guard Hwa In. They left. BW entered and SK inside waiting for him. They have some talk where SK said she is content with what is now. BW hugged SK, but he looked hesitant/troubled. 
 

DY is helping Lee's main guy dressing his wounded arm. He asked why he saved him, why he is always risking his life for SK? DY replied no one will mourn the loss of my life anyway. He reminded him that his aunt will be devastated if something happen to DY. Main guy said he won’t report DY’s involvement because he’s saved him. Then WY and main guy (gosh I should learn his name) updating Lee that King came to BW's house. Just then, someone announced King's arrival at the Lee's residence.

Gosh I am watching it live for a bit

 

King spoke to both BW and SK together ...but later he asked to speak to SK alone. This is the scene where she asked for his blessings - he was against it but she mentions about how much she loves him and how much they have gone through together. Her feelings for him is sincere. 

But don't think King approved . He just left some instructions with BW - about protecting her if I am not mistaken. Seems like nothing has been decided. What seems worrying @ktcjdrama is that  BW seems troubled even though he was trying not to be in front of her. A sweet hug ( ehhhhh can they please progress beyond these hugs!!!)

WY went out and lied his father not feeling well. King still wanted to go see him and WY even said it’s infectious, lol... But King still went inside, speaking through the door with formalities with Lee. LOL, he pretended to cough and speak weakly... King told Lee that he just came from BW's house and he wants to talk to Lee about things that have happened, had happened anyway, they should just forget everything (indirectly asking Lee to let the issue about Hwa In pass and both should just pretend no issue). King told Lee calmly that he needs his help as usual because the country has other important stuff to deal with. He trusts that Lee will be well the next day and he will see him in the palace, but his face is showing anger. Outside, DY and WY waiting for King. After some greetings, King asked DY to come with him. At a distance, he asked if DY has given up on Hwa In. He basically asked DY to choose, the princess or his father, answer it tomorrow. Cut to WY asking Lee what to do next with what there King suggested. Lee said he doesn’t trust the King and and he will surely turn on what he said. Let’s carry on with our plan. 

 

Morning. Some villagers outside demanding to see the King to hear their grievances at the gate. A minister is stopping them to go in, and they started forcing their way in. There is someone who sneaked into the group and purposely stabbed one of the palace guards, then left the group. Minister is mad that a guard is stabbed, so he ordered for everyone to be captured. They were tortured while being questioned who instructed them. Some men in black pasting some propagandas on the walls in the village. Morning, some guards came to tear it away. Then cut to King with DY, BW, KJJ and Court Lady Kim all face down in front of him. King threw a document to DY for him to read out loud. Everyone there seems to be asking for pardon. Even Court Lady Kim is bowing her head and with fear. King went face to face with DY and mentioned his father LYC. He grabbed his throat and also barked at him to prove that the document was not written by his father. (The propaganda and document basically claimed that current king killed the past king with a certain Kim person in the palace, which is why King is soooo mad)

 

Lee and WY at their residence. Lee is contemplating between two rolled up scrolls. He put one down. WY asked so who will take up the throne? Lee said if he put the crown prince, surely one day he will turn to avenge for his father. Lee looked far away towards the window, and WY suddenly realised something, and asked "Then?" Lee smiled.... Cut to DY walking outside, with Aunt. Hm, I think Lee is going to sacrifice DY... Aunt is giving some advice to DY. Well, she is still not getting through to him... DY said he obeys her for anything but just not about SK because he cannot give up on the princess, please forgive him... Sigh, this stubborn person.

 

DY reached home and about to go inside but stopped by main guy. He said there are guests. DY asked, if big bro is inside, why he cannot go in. Inside, Lee is briefing 4 officials. Outside the residence, BW and KJJ in commoner's clothes staking Lee's house. They saw the guests coming out, and followed them separately. One official and his troop reached some sort of warehouse. BW followed and saw inside the man is inspecting some swords and guns in boxes and boxes. Someone discovered BW and shouted. So everyone came out. BW managed to hide though. As the men went out, he went back in. There, the person guarding the weapons is dead, and the boxes are empty.

In some ways , Dae Yeop is such a tragic figure. He is caught between a rock and a hard place . Neither the King nor his father is happy with him. But he's gone too far to stop as he wants to protect Sk.

 

Looks like Lee and some of the minister / noble men are smuggling guns . BW and the West Faction guy go undercover to spy on Lee's activities. They report what they saw to Court Lady Kim who then meets with Lee. She confronts him angrily but I am sure she is negotiating something

Smhhhh ..so BW's mum is finally nice to SK (pfttt I bet she wouldn't have been if she didn't realise that SK was a princess) . The mum giving SK some "beauty products".

KJJ and BW reported to Court Lady Kim about the smuggled weapons. But she can’t do anything without evidence. Then she went to talk with LYC at the library. She even raised her voice. He also raised his voice. He mentioned someone and Kim said, that person is dead!... paused and said He isn't?? (It’s the royal chef. About the bowl of porridge that killed the past king)... Anyway, cut to Kim telling BW, Lee wants to cancel his family reinstatement and for him to hand over Hwa In, then he will keep quiet about the royal chef. She asked BW what should she do? Should she betray the King and join hands with LYC let him being out royal chef? She told BW if he could find the royal chef and kill him, then LYC will have no hold against Kim. BW thought for a while and asking if he agreed and succeeded to help King put LYC away, what does Kim think King will do to Hwa In? Kim said Hwa In will probably be sent to some place only for widows. 

 

At BW's home, Mother with a box called SK over. Inside the box some make ups, Mother is asking her to choose. SK smiled and told her to just use it for herself. Just then, BW returned home, so Mother called him inside and talked about a relative of theirs, the one with royal blood, who is held in exile. Some queen/dowager? I think she wants to meet up? BW said the security there is very tight for now at that place.

 

Evening, CB talking to someone at the wine parlour. That person has found something for him very fast. CB handed him a bag of money and asking him to do something, which the man got confused about.

 

Jo is waiting for CB to return, when he returned, both were quiet. She just awkwardly go back into the kitchen. CB followed her, then she asked him to go to her room. CB took out a document from his sleeve and placed it on the kitchen. Jo asked what is it, and when she read it, she cried. It's a letter from her family. CB returned to his room to find a table set up, for praying ritual. CB then went to the kitchen where Jo still crying. They had a good talk. Jo had to set it there in her room for some reason. Anyway, they went inside and CB started bowing and kneeling and crying... Later, they were at the backyard, CB brought some wine out. He thanked Jo, she thanked him too for the news on her family. Both saying that they're both "dead" persons. CB confessed and asked her to live with him. So funny, he is too embarrassed that he's holding a basket over his face between them. Some bickering again, haha.... Jo swoops in for a kiss!!! Whattttt??? We get a kiss from them before a kiss from our OTP??

Morning, CB smelling some flowers and smiling. BW came and asked what is he happy about. CB then suggested something and then both went to Jo to ask for a name. Jo can't remember and asked them to ask SK instead. Cut to SK teaching Cha Dol. Mother is outside listening in and very pleased. BW and CB came but didn't go in seeing how the mother is enjoying the eavesdropping so much.

 

Some secret meeting going on at Lee's residence. Lots of ministers came. WY told main guy not to let anyone in, especially DY. They signed a pact, as in preview. Har, har... DY is listening in from another side of the building.... He then quickly went to BW's house. Jo saw him and asked him to quickly leave. DY said he is here to see BW. He told BW that he will take care of the issue with his father. BW said that he always said he knows what to do. DY admitted that he doesn’t trust the King, and just like BW, he also has the obligation to protect his family, his father. He said he doesn’t expect for BW to understand him but please not tell the King anything about what he wants to do, and BW replied "this is the last time" to which DY replied "understood". As DY walked out, he met Jo again and asked how princess is doing, and she replied she is fine. CB saw them and Jo told him he came to find BW. CB teased her, only to get hit again.

 

DY looked back at BW's residence from outside with deep thoughts. When he reached home, it's already dark. He went standing outside his parents bedroom, and he announced he wants to greet them good evening. Lee answered no need and sent him away. He said good night father, mother. Then walked to another building, eyeing it... He sneaked inside and searched the cabinets. He found the signed pact. Just as he was about to leave, WY came in. He tried to go out, but Lee is standing there. WY is asking his father see what's in his hand, and fuelling his father that this person should die (urgh, this WY is always doing the "act before think"). Lee took main guy's sword and as he put it in front of DY, he held it up with both hands, then kneeled down before DY, followed by main guy, Lee said some formal greetings to DY and WY also kneeled down. DY is a royal! Certain person's son.

 

Preview: BW and SK held their own personal wedding. Lee explained to DY about his real identity and is baiting DY to take up his place then he can be with Hwa In princess... (me: rolleyes)

My suspicion has always been that his "aunt" is DY's real mother and she must have been romantically linked to some royalty, which is why he cannot marry SK. Either he is king gwanghae's son, or the deposed late king's son.
