@abs-oluteM Hmm, I don't see crumbs unless it's in the things they say. 😅

:smug: you have to switch on your shipper radar ...ahhahaahah....joking, honestly no idea myself. We just like to ship when they look visually appealing together. :D

You have a shrine for him in the other place too ? Wow! You can build one here if time permits. At least I can admire together with you. Guess who is always @SilverMoonTea's number one customer for all her oppa and shipping threads ?

They did a special on his piano playing skills. He does know how to play the piano if I remember reading his profile correctly. Do agree with @im0202 that orchestra performance is a different thing altogether

ooo @UnniSara you're watching this too?

@im0202 I thought so, it looks pretty real that he played the piano bits in the BTS. It'd be lovely he actually learnt them, like how Juri did when she plays Nodame. Tamaki Hiroshi learnt piano too, just the part they have to film and he focuses more on conducting after.

Kim Min Jae trained as an idol actually, but didn't debut as one. He raps and dance pretty well too. The second YouTube isn't him, it's not his voice and there's a lot of Kim Min Jae.

yes its always great when u see how an artist pour all out to make their character as believable as possible :)

Yeah I did. I saw potential in him around 2016 (along with YSJ, JKY, JHI and WDH) so I started a thread for him. The rest did progress pretty well in their career, but he and Shin Jae Ha whom I also started a thread didn't kick off as smoothly. I think I will build one for him here. Please show him some love and hopefully more fans will see his charm via this drama too :mine:

Joon Young is going to stop playing piano and become an idol

..eeek...and rewatching their scenes and MVs...

This one is really nice with subs

Eps 1 and 2 already had so many little moments of them. I just like this understanding they have of each other,  without needing to say a word. You know in episode 1 when she was yelled at by the conductor for not leaving , I liked how he dropped the music score to stop it from becoming worse. And then realising how crappy she must have been feeling when her bestie came to congratulate her , he helped her to save face by telling her she did a good job.  In return ,in eps 2 , she remembered his reaction hearing her colleague badmouth him at the music shop. I was so glad she went back to meet him at the restaurant, knowing he needed some companionship after a long emotional day.

I can probably list out all their moments, cuz I loved them all.  What are some of your favourite moments of the OTP so far?

I am finally here with my Ep 1 thoughts. Once I started writing, I just couldn't stop! Turns out I am the long-winded sort, oops!

General Impressions

For a drama that wasn’t on my radar, I enjoyed it much more than I expected. Possibly because I went in expecting it would take place primarily within a music school and the characters would be younger than what they turned out to be. The slower pace, softly diffused colour palette and understated portrayals of their character by the cast created a rather dream-like atmosphere that I found very calming to wind down to for often-hectic Mondays and Tuesdays.

I thought it was rather smart of the drama to begin with Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto, I imagine it’s now a fairly recognisable piece of music among Asian drama fans due to the popularity of Nodame Cantabile. I was shocked by Joon-young’s rather forceful playing of it though. I have never seen a pianist come off their seats like that!

I wouldn’t call myself a classical musical fan but I do listen to them when the mood strikes and have attended the stray concert over the years. So I am looking forward to the drama’s choices to add to my playlist.

I have never heard of Traumerei before and it’s lovely. I looked it up and it translates into English as daydream. Which seems to be a rather appropriate first episode title for a drama that follows the lives of classical musicians and students as they try to figure out what happens of dreams when it's time to stop dreaming or how to be able to dream again.

About The Characters

I like our main leads of Song-ah and Joon-young. Both seem like really decent people. I admire Song-ah’s determination to pursue her passion in music after her first Business degree. That she didn’t let her dismissal by the conductor go by lightly speaks to that determination. She seems to have a lot of strength beneath that soft-spoken facade. The scene with her mother and sister was quite upsetting but at least she has a champion in her father.

Joon-young seems to be harbouring a lot of pain, the burden from supporting his family to his unrequited love. I hope he will be able to work his way through all that in a healthy manner (with Song-ah’s support). I am quite relieved he’s not the tsundere type.

I will admit that I never gave a thought to the drama’s title until the last scene, where the significance of Brahms was revealed and we finally understand how Song-ah and Joon-young are the titular Brahms in their respective friendship triangles. The difference though it seems is how each of them approach the situation. Maintaining the status quo of friendship for Song-ah, but the burden of unattainable love for Joon-young. The Claras of Dong-yoon and Jung-kyung do not seem indifferent at this point.

Memorable Moments

I wasn’t expecting so many adorable moments between Song-ah and Joon-young right from the get-go. I am totally sold on this pairing! My favourite was at the bbq restaurant from their awkward meeting outside the restaurant, Joon-young asking for her number for room scheduling purposes (doesn’t matter the reason as long as you got the number, my boy!), Song-ah’s surprise that he paid attention to her name and how the other cultural foundation colleagues were so determined to have them be friends. Cute!

Does it seem like Joon-young was ready to be friends with Song-ah and he was a little crestfallen when she demurred? He looks more than a little interested in her already, having noticed her since the opening performance. :hearties:

Extra Notes

I am impressed that Kim Min-Jae is really playing the piano here. I thought there was a stand-in based on the way the opening performance was shot. Very impressive! Does anyone know if Park Eun-bin had previous violin playing experience or she had to learn for the drama?

So I have never watched so many k-dramas back to back till this year but even with just three dramas, it’s interesting to see how supporting actors recur in so many dramas. I already recognise Director Song and the sleazy journalist from WIL, and two nurses and Director Ju from HP!

Back to Song Ah. I am confused as to why she's considered as "not good enough" (the last row of the violinists mean they did bad in their studies). This isn't some sort of school/uni performances at a festival. My understanding/impression is that if one is able to play in an orchestra that commercialises the performances to public at some well-known music hall, then that musician must have good enough skills to be accepted performing on stage with a well known conductor and pianist. Am I wrong?

I don't think this was a professional orchestra, but an orchestra made up of the senior students of the music department, hence their seating arrangements. The concert was for the 60th anniversary of the music department.

Finally, we found a couple to help us tide over the Wintergarden dry spell!

My favourite Ep 1 moment was the whole BBQ restaurant sequence and Ep 2 was when they were waiting for each other to get on a cab! It feels like Joon-young is definitely paying her special attention. :wow:

This teaser is also so heart-fluttering! I really hope it's part of a proper episode and not just a specially-filmed teaser.

Also found this compilation by SBS of most of their major moments. SBS is pushing this ship very strongly too!

I thought Ep 2 was a very solid episode that delved further into the characters and began to explore the notion of what do you do when reality catches up to dreams.

Three of the four characters, Song-ah, Joon-young, Jung-kyung, seem to be at a crossroads in their lives where they are reaching or have reached the end of their initial ambitions. None of their paths ahead seem very smooth and with their identities having been so entwined so closely with these ambitions, their disorientation is very palpable. All is not what it seems on the surface, as Song-ah herself points out in the wake of her friend’s comment about how she is doing better than all of them.

All their individual challenges are very relatable. Song-ah trying to figure how to further pursue her ambitions when her dreams are bigger than her ability, Joon-young battling with self-doubt and competition and Jung-kyung trying to live up to expectations and failing.

I felt for Joon-young in this episode at the music store when his own self-doubt was recognised and laid bare by others. I am also glad that he took the decision to rest and study for the year. While it could be construed as an escape or perhaps imposed for other reasons (his hand?), taking the time off to rest and reflect is better than to keep going.

Jung-kyung is still a mystery although she featured quite a bit in this episode. I couldn’t quite make sense of all her actions until it was pointed out that she’s a child prodigy that is no longer living up to expectations. Coupled with the rejections she received from job applications in American music conservatories, her identity and self-worth must be in terrible flux which could explain her confusing actions towards Joon-young. Song-ah’s voiceover in Ep 1 explains that Jung-kyung kissed Joon-young out of professional jealousy and how she wanted to ascertain her place in his life. But I think there is also an element of her unconsciously self-sabotaging her relationship with Hyeon-ho because of her insecurities.

I really question at this point though whether she liked any of the two boys properly. Did she choose Hyeon-ho because he liked her openly and she needed that validation of his feelings in the wake of her mother's death? I also wonder how much does Hyeon-ho know and how much is he choosing to ignore for the sake of preserving his friendship with Joon-young.

There are also several hints about her relationship with her mother that must be playing a bigger role later in Jung-kyung and Joon-young’s backstory. It blew my mind a bit that Traumarei is connected to Jung-kyung, and that significance of that piece has yet to be fully revealed.

OTP Moments

My heart fluttered hard when Joon-young noticed Song-ah’s spilled coffee and exchanged it with her! It was such a totally unnecessary move on his part to do that but of course I am enjoying how much attention he is paying to her.

Other OTP moments:

Hyeon-ho asking Joon-young where is home for him?

Me: Song-ah will be your home!

Joon-young asking Song-ah to turn the pages for him.

Me: Yes. She will turn the page for you to get over Jung-kyung and to move on with your life!

Joon-young saying Song-ah needs to feel the breathing of the pianist when turning the page.

Me: Yes! Get in sync with each other!

Joon-young and Song-ah wearing black and white.

Me: They are the colours of piano keys! They are going to perform and make beautiful music together in the future!

They were so cute hanging out together at the end of the episode. When have you laughed this freely, Joon-young? I really like the drama’s approach for Song-ah and Joon-young to like and care for each other as friends first. I think it speaks to the idea of home that was earlier brought up by Hyeon-ho, and that hopefully Joon-young and Song-ah will realise that the comfort that they are beginning to share and bring to each other will be able to gradually transform into the home that they both are searching for.

Other Notes

I was surprised to see that Dong-yoon is acquainted with Hyeon-ho, Jung-kyung and Joon-young. I wasn’t expecting the two groups of friends to intermesh so soon. There’s something rather fishy about Dong-yoon from his regular contact with Song-ah, him ignoring his ex-girlfriend to them sneaking about to meet about Song-ah’s violin. Is he catching feelings for Song-ah?

I like that the Team Leader seems to trust Song-ah. I am excited to see how Song-ah will also develop in her internship. I don’t think that it was an accident that her first degree was business. I anticipate some form of her combining her business and music degrees for her future.

SO LOOKING FORWARD TO EP 3 & 4!

Hahaha yes! He played 'River Flows in You'. Swoon~~~~~~:wow:

Seems like his hard work paid off and he's able to shoot his piano playing scenes quite well so far as shown in the behind the-scenes videos.

We finally have a new episode today!

Have you guys gone to a symphony orchestra before? Where I am, it's readily available but I never really bothered to go (don't know many people who likes classical) until Joe Hisaishi decided to perform here. So I went, and fell in love with his live orchestral performance. I then went to another where Anne-Sophie Mutter performed Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major. Hers was not as great experience as I had hoped. Joe Hisaishi made sure there was enough microphones and the music was nicely delivered to where we were seated, whereas Sophie's violin solo was so soft it was not as audible. Nonetheless, I felt like I did something meaningful, lol!

What I am trying to say is if anyone of you have the chance, must not miss out on Joe Hisaishi's Studio Ghibli concert and look out for some other awesome symphony orchestra performances in your country. The experience is pretty awesome. One of my bucket lists would be one day to watch/listen to Itzhak Perlman playing some of the classical pieces I really like live.

I’ve gone to watch my local symphonic orchestra a few times years back. I’d like to watch more but the ticket prices are no joke lol so I’ve stopped going. Just a couple of musicals in the last few years.
Wow you’re fortunate to have been able to watch Joe Hisaishi live! He came to my country recently but the tickets were sold out fast. I didn’t get to go but thankfully, it wasn’t a Studio Ghibli orchestral performance, or else I would’ve been sad for awhile :PikachuFacePalm:

I agree. Watching orchestras perform live is whole another feel. Gotta pick the right performances and orchestras though to get your money’s worth haha.

@mademoisellesia I haven't been to one in ages and they are quite accessible for me as well. Pretty sad that this drama is airing during a period where we can't go for concerts.

You Tube it for now! Watch the one I attached below if you haven't. It's TOO good to miss.

I think when this is all over, let's all go in our own countries. I agree, have to pick the right one. Anne's was a bit of a disappointment. I have been fortunate to watch Joe twice. If he comes again I will go because it makes me happy after watching his performance. A Japanese daddy and his daughter was singing Totoro on their walk back to their car and I sang along with them a few steps behind.

When it was announced that he was coming I thought it maybe a once in a life time thing & he may never come again. I had no idea the tickets would sell like hot cakes and nearly had a heart-attack trying to get it because it was almost selling out few minutes after it was opened for sale. He looked much older than I remember him from his You Tube clips so I felt blessed that I got to see a legendary music composer performed live & he is not getting younger.

The experience was so good that when he was coming again and with a bigger venue and marching band, I knew I MUST go. The best/good seats were still already taken, LOL. This time I was willing to spend more since the last time was so jjiang & he had more in store for us. If you can't watch the concert live, do watch this one coz it is still the BEST. The Studio Ghibli tour performance is based on this, except it is scaled down and depending on the venue of your country.

Regardless of the scale of the performances, it is just simply awesome to listen to all this musical instruments serenade you live. His Ghibli's music is truly touching and sensational to hear live. And he is a really cute Ojisan ~ ♥

 What have "Do You Like Brahms?" done to me?!! Sorry for the off-topic, while we are on Ghibli, another 2 must check out clips if you are interested.

Spoiler

This version of Princess Mononoke is the best I have come across, the combo of erhu and violin really gives you a lot of Feels.

Skeleton recaps (while watching live)

repeat of the restaurant scene...it shows her going back to the restaurant. He wondered why she returned , and she said something about how she would like to get his autograph on the CD, seems she said she was his fan. He was tickled but obliged. As he was signing , she went out - she got a call and message from her bestie asking if she was free. Song Ah , did not reply and got back inside and asked him if he minded her seating down. He invited her to. And they started talking. It led to some flashbacks about his childhood and it showed scenes of how stressed he was taking part in competition. He was taking meds to calm his nerves etc.

After dinner , she took a cab back. He received a text from JK asking if he had eaten or something. He mentioned that he had with Song Ah. A couple of more texts from her ( honestly this JK confuses me - what does she want from him? )

Next day back in the office , she replies to her bestie's text.  Some stuff happened at the office , and it seems Song Ah was sent out to look for him as something happened that he needed to be informed of? Anyway she met him at the park as per preview. He apolgised for troubling her , something about having some problems with his phone(?)
After that she went back to the office and hear of her colleagues talking about JY . Something about him not wanting to play some songs ...anyway , she recalls the scenes of the airport , of why he won't play Brahms etc.

Song Ah goes home after work..calls bestie who does not seem well. So I think , she got a ticket to go for a concert .

Well well , Joon Young and Jung Kyung were also watching the same concert. An audience in front of them was gossiping about JY. JK purposely called out his name to stop the couple in front from doing so. JY did not want JK to a make a fuss about it

Oooooo, Song Ah comes in and guess what , she sits a couple of seats from them. She greets them ...ahh so cute and awkward . Anyway the concert went on. Concert over , she went to the washroom. Dong Yoon ( who had invited Song Ah ) finally came and he invited Song Ah to join them for a meal(? )

Song Ah went  back to the empty hall to see the seats where the orchestra played. JY saw her looking forlornly ..she remembered how she got called out to leave in eps 1

JY,  Song Ah , Dong Yoon, JK and Hyun Ho had a meal together. Something strange happened- so JY saw Dong Yoon talking to Song Ah bestie at a stairwell , and I think bestie is still in love with him. I don't excatly know what happened , but JY overhear them talking about Song Ah. I think bestie is not supposed to know Song Ah was there. But anyway , Song Ah was going to open the door to the stairwell , but JY stopped her in time. Song Ah was surprised but he gave some excuse. She did not see her bestie and DY.

Back in the restaurant all 5 of them together - JY realised about Song Ah's feelings for Dong Yoon. It was awkward as he realised that she too was in some love triangle involving Min Sung and Dong Yoon. After dinner he left them alone but looked from afar

Song Ah went back to DY's studio to get her violin sorted. She asked if he was in touch with Min Sung. I don't get why no one seems to be honest about their feelings, and is somewhat lying to each other
