Writer Kim Eun Sook shares how she got the idea to write 'The Glory.'

The backstory to how writer Kim Eun Sook came to write 'The Glory' is gaining attention.

Recently, netizens have been talking about the story behind how Kim Eun Sook came to write the screenplay for 'The Glory' in various online communities.

But then my daughter wiped away my fears with just one phrase - 'Mom, you're not the Kim Eun Sook like the past'." She explained that was the first wave of shock from the conversation with her daughter.

The second shock came when her daughter asked her this question, "Mom, would you be more heart broken if I beat someone to death or if I got beat to death by someone else?"

Kim Eun Sook shared she was shocked by this question and explained, "This was the second wave of shock. It was hellish for me. The story unfolded in my head in that instance and that's how I began writing the story for 'The Glory'."

'Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist' returns for second season with more romance

optimize.jpg

From left, actors Kim Min Jae, Kim Hyang Gi, and director Park Won Gook pose during an online press conference for tvN's new series "Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist 2," Tuesday. Courtesy of tvN

Actor Kim Min Jae hinted that the second season of "Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist" will delve deeper into the romance between the two lead characters.

The period comedy series revolves around skilled physician Yoo Se Poong (Kim), who used to work for the royal family. After losing his job at the palace due to a medical incident, he meets a small-town medical practitioner Gye Ji Han (Kim Sang Kyung) and widow Seo Eun Woo (Kim Hyang Gi) and joins them to treat patients' physical and mental health issues.

The new season, set to kick off Wednesday, will pick up on the story of Se Poong returning to Hanyang, the name of Seoul during the Joseon Kingdom period, where he used to work, with Ji Han and Eun Woo. With the help of two friends, Se Poong sets out on another quest to become a true doctor as he encounters and treats patients, each with their own stories.

"With Season 2, we've put the focus on the romance (between Se Poong and Eun Woo). In the first season, Se Poong didn't really express his feelings for Eun Woo and the plot didn't center on a romance. So the viewers will see a huge change with the second season," Kim Min Jae said during an online press conference for the series, Tuesday. "The way Se Poong expresses his feelings and the subplot is close to perfection. It's really sweet."

The series' director Park Won Gook, who also led the first season, and actress Kim Hyang Gi also said that there will be sweet, romantic scenes.

"(When we filmed the two's romance scenes,) my heart would pound. On the set, I was so fixated on watching their acting through the monitor that I wouldn't even check if the camera was out of focus. That's how sweet their love story is," the director said.

Kim Hyang Gi added, "There are a lot of scenes that will leave viewers' hearts all aflutter. Se Poong has become much more honest in showing his feelings."

The director explained that the new season will have a bigger setting and story of the characters will also be deeper.

"As the story is now set in Hanyang and at the palace, we've expanded everything. The characters' subplots will be delving deeper and the setting has become bigger," he said.

Compared to the previous season, the two lead actors said that their characters go through a change.

"In the first one, Se Poong was more of an uncompromising and single-minded person. But in season two, as he treats different patients, he comes to be more warmhearted and feels more responsible to save people's lives." Kim Min Jae said.

Kim Hyang Gi's character Eun Woo finds her talent as a physician during the first season and begins to learn from Se Poong, including how to use acupuncture.

The actress said that the new season will show Eun Woo growing into a skilled physician.

"You will be able to see (Eun Woo) gaining more confidence as a doctor, and the different chemistry with other characters in a new environment," she said. "Season two will be filled with spectacles. If you follow our series, you will be able to have an enjoyable time."

"Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist 2" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 p.m.

The 2023 Berlin International Film Festival has added Netflix' film "Kill Boksoon" at its Berlinale Special program, according to Netflix on Saturday.

Selections for the Berlinale Special include documentary, feature and short films that elevate and explore cinema as an art form. The special films also try to reconnect the audience with beloved characters or people while reflecting upon current topics or history.

A total of eight films have been invited to the program this year, including American-British biographical drama, “Golda,” French comedy-drama “Call My Agent!” and Andrea Di Stefano’s Italian crime feature, “Last Night of Amore.”

Director Byun Sung Hyun’s “Kill Boksoon,” stars Cannes 2007 best actress winner Jeon Do Yeon as a legendary female contract killer, who is hired by Sol Kyung Gu, the head of the contract killing agency.

The story unfolds around Kill receiving a problematic case to solve. The killer gets stuck in a no-win dilemma situation just before signing a contract renewal with the agency.

"I was thrilled to hear such unexpected news, and want to thank (the festival) for recognizing the film," the director said, adding that it will be a great surprise to the actors who worked for the film.

The 73rd Berlin International Film Festival is scheduled to be held from February, 16 to 26, in Berlin as an in-person event.

‘Phantom,’ a colorful, classy spy action film set in 1930s

20230115000124-0.jpg

A scene from “Phantom” (CJENM)

Director Lee Hae Young’s upcoming period action flick “Phantom” is set in Korea under Japanese colonial rule, but patriotic or historical messages are well-hidden throughout a highly-charged plot.

Rather, it invites the audience to immerse themselves in stunt-studded action. Lee’s articulate approach to mise-en-sceneis also on show through the five protagonists' outfits in leather or velvet that match their characters.

After shortly showing the background on how anti-Japanese group members secretly working at Japanese Government-General of Korea failed to kill Mahara Kaito, the new Japanese resident-general's security chief, the film quickly brings the setting to a remote hotel on a seaside cliff.

There, Kaito (played by Park Hae Soo) plans to hunt down the spy code-named “phantom,” within 24 hours.

The list of suspects includes Murayama Junji (Sol Kyung Gu), an elite Japanese police officer who has been relegated to a communications supervisor of the police bureau, Park Cha Kyung (Lee Ha Nee), a communications department official born to an affluent Korean family and Mr. Cheon (Suh Hyun Woo), who works as a Korean cipher decoder. Yuriko (Park So Dam) is an ambitious, powerful Korean secretary to a high-ranking officer at the Japanese Government-General of Korea.

South Korean actor-singer Jang Keun Suk is coming back after a five-year hiatus as a lawyer-turned-detective who investigates a mysterious murder case in Coupang Play's new crime thriller series "The Bait ."

In the show, Jang plays Ko Do Han, who formerly served as a lawyer for wealthy people and now as a detective who follows a murder case. Lee Elijah plays Cheon Na Yeon, a reporter who teams up with him to uncover the truth.

Heo Sung Tae appears as Noh Sang Cheon, who is named as the main suspect of the murder case although he is known to have died eight years ago after being accused of masterminding a massive fraud case.

Jang, who formerly enjoyed massive popularity in Asia with his roles in rom-com dramas, said he chose the crime thriller after the long break to show his new side as an actor.

"I thought (Ko Do Han) would be a new challenge as it breaks my old, predictable image," Jang said in a press conference to promote the series Wednesday. "I grew a mustache and tried to restrain myself to portray a wild man."

The 36-year-old actor said five years passed too quickly as he completed his mandatory military service from 2018 to 2020 and had a refreshing period afterwards.

"I didn't know the break would take this long. I treasured the script of 'The Bait' to make the time meaningful," he said.

Heo, who played villains in Netflix series "Squid Game" and the Disney+ series "Big Bet" said he wants to write an "encyclopedia of villains" with his "unforgettable" character in the new work.

"I tried to control my power. I thought acting would be a challenge as it is an epic tale of Noh Sang Cheon," he said.

The first two episodes of "The Bait" will be available on the streaming platform by e-commerce operator Coupang on January, 27, on Friday. The second part will be released in the first half of this year.
