I'm glad to see Dr. Romantic 2 win some awards. I know it was not the best compared to the first season but I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it! Also happy for Ahn Ji Ho! He was great in Nobody Knows. =)

Nice to see a variety of winners from SBS, KBS though...I loved the Once Again couples so I'm happy for that but if they were going to have that many best couple awards, they should have given one to LaLa and Jun too!

So many new teasers came out today for upcoming dramas in 2021. Joseon Exorcist was posted in its drama thread by @mademoiselle so go check that one out too!

@Tofu Penthouse is a big winner. Bit sad Han Suk Kyu wasn't given anything because without him as Kim Sabu, there would not be Romantic Doctor 2. I still want an ensemble reunion of S1 and S2 for S3 when Sejong returns from his army!

@Thong Thin Is Hansu supposed to be like this? Did you read the book?

I read online ebook, but can visualize if base on his Hansu character

K-dramas to watch out for in 2021

By Kwak Yeon-soo

In 2020, K-dramas soared in popularity as pandemic-driven lockdowns drove viewers to the small screen. They made waves across the globe thanks to streaming platforms like Netflix. Melodrama "Crash Landing on You" caused a sensation in Japan and historical zombie drama "Kingdom 2" attracted attention after viewers raved about the gripping storyline, sumptuous sets and elaborate costumes.

After such a strong year, some of the freshest new TV series will land on TV this year. They traverse genres including fantasy, thriller and period dramas. Here are our picks of the K-dramas of 2021 to watch.

TvN drama "Cliffhanger," also known as "Jirisan" starring Jun Ji-hyun and Ju Ji-hoon, is a mystery thriller that depicts mountain rescuers and park rangers trying to help lost hikers. Written by Kim Eun-hee ("Kingdom") and helmed by director Lee Eung-bok ("Mr. Sunshine" and "Sweet Home"), it is one of the most anticipated series to look out for.

"Hospital Playlist 2" is a follow-up to the popular tvN series about five doctors who have been friends since they went to medical school together in 1999. Actors Jo Jung-suk, Yoo Yeon-seok, Jung Kyung-ho, Kim Dae-myung and Jeon Mi-do will reprise their roles for the second season.

Legal drama "Vincenzo," fronted by actors Song Joong-ki and Jeon Yeo-bin, revolves around Vincenzo Cassano, a Korean-born but Italian-raised lawyer and Mafia consigliere who returns to his motherland to join a high-profile law firm.

JTBC drama "Sisyphus: The Myth" is a sci-fi mystery about a genius engineer embarking on a perilous journey to uncover the hidden identity of mysterious creatures. Park Shin-hye and "Stranger" actor Cho Seung-woo will lead the cast.

Set in 1987, "Snowdrop" is a historical romance drama that features a stellar cast and crew. It's written and directed by the same team that created "SKY Castle" (2019), one of cable network's highest rated K-dramas. Jung Hae-in will star alongside Jisoo of BLACKPINK.

SBS will focus on producing period dramas to attract viewers. "Joseon Exorcist" is a fantasy action historical series that revolves around exorcists defending the 1392-1910 Joseon Kingdom from demons. Actors Gam Woo-sung, Jang Dong-yoon and Park Sung-hoon will play the lead roles.

Set in the Joseon era, "Red Sky" is a fantasy romance series based on the novel of the same name by Jung Eun-gwol, whose stories "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" and "Moon Embracing the Sun" have also been adapted into hit dramas. Kim Yoo-jung will play the female painter who was born blind but miraculously gains vision. Kim will star opposite rising star Ahn Hyo-seop.

KBS will roll our school romance dramas to target the younger generation. "Dear. M" is about university students searching for "M," a mystery individual who is mentioned in an anonymous post on the university's online discussion forum.

Another coming-of-age series "School 2021," featuring Kim Yo-han of boy band Wei, follows a group of high school students as they go through various struggles.

In the MBC drama "Black Sun," actor Namgoong Min will play the role of an NIS agent who disappears and returns to the organization to track down the person who betrayed him. The TV network and local streaming platform Wavve invested 15 billion won ($13.8 million) into this 12-episode series.

Netflix will roll out several original K-drama series in 2021 including one-off special episode "Kingdom: Ashin of the North," zombie series "All of Us Are Dead" and director Yeon Sang-ho's "Hellbound."

Hahahaha @Tofu There's more coming, with Park Hyung Sik and Lee Jong Suk returning.

I'm more excited for Park Hyung Sik but I know @stroppyse is probably excited to see Lee Jong Suk again. Haha!

Kim Eun Sook really like to work with the same people she's worked with before?

Netflix announces long-term rentals of content studios in Gyeonggi

Have you enjoyed “Kingdom” (2019), “The School Nurse Files” (2020) or “Sweet Home” (2020)? Well, you have plenty more to look forward to in the coming days, as Netflix announced that it has rented two content studios in Gyeonggi for several years, to establish a long-term infrastructure for producing its original content in Korean on Thursday.

The announcement comes four months after Netflix officially founded a Korean corporate body in September. The two studios are YCDSMC Studio 139 in Yeoncheon, which takes up 9,000 square meters (96,875 square feet) and has six stages, and Samsung Studio in Paju with 7,000 square meters and three stages. Netflix will begin operating the two venues in March.

Netflix will be producing a series of new original content in Korean, starting with a Korean version of “La Casa de Papel,” or “Money Heist,” which the company announced last month. A popular Spanish Netflix original series, “La Casa de Papel” by Alex Pina is a daring criminal drama that revolves around a professor who leads two heists against the Royal Mint of Spain and the Bank of Spain. Its unique visuals and bold story captured the hearts of viewers around the world, winning the series four seasons so far.

The Korean version will be made into 12 episodes, directed by Kim Hong-sun who helmed the popular OCN drama series “The Guest” (2018) and “Voice” (2017), with the help of scriptwriter Ryu Yong-jae, famed for his work on the tvN series “Psychopath Diary” (2019).

Since 2015, Netflix has invested around 770 billion won ($708 million) into creating Korean original content. Netflix described the long-term studio lease as “The embodiment of our will to continue our investment as well as our partnership with the Korean creative ecosystem.”

Korean Netflix originals, especially fantasy genres, have proven popular among the global audience, pioneering a path toward a new generation of Hallyu (Korean wave) content through the digital platform. Continuing the popularity of historical zombie flick “Kingdom,” the latest drama series “Sweet Home” ranked in the top 10 of daily content in over 70 regions around the world, including Korea, the United States, Canada and France.

The lineup of new originals for the year is also star-studded. While “What Happened to Mr. Cha?” kicked off 2021 with a bucket full of laughter on Jan. 1, and sci-fi blockbuster “Space Sweepers” featuring actor Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri is set to premiere on Feb. 5. Others waiting in line are: A bonus episode of the popular “Kingdom” series the "Kingdom: Ashin of the North,” sci-fi thriller “The Silent Sea,” second seasons of the romantic comedy “Love Alarm,” drama “Move to Heaven,” horror series “Hellbound” by auteur Yeon Sang-ho of the famed zombie flick “Train to Busan” (2016).

“Netflix is thrilled to deepen its investment in Korea, as well as Korean films and series,” said Netflix Vice President for the Studio Operations, Amy Reinhard. “With these new studios, Netflix is better positioned than ever to increase our production of great stories from Korea while also providing a wealth of production-related jobs for talented professionals in Korea’s creative community.”
