If weather is good for Dubai, then definitely go to Dubai first! What are you planning to do there, apart from shopping?

One of the main reasons for the trip is to see the Burj Khalifa and also to experience the desert. There are some interesting places like the Museum of the Future and Dubai's Underwater Zoo /Aquarium ( we love going to aquariums) on my list

Spoiler

This round if I do go back to Japan, I will spend some time in Nagoya (some amazing science type museums - the kiddo loves things like that) and go to Shirakawago.

Spoiler

Since I have to fly in via Tokyo , I will spend a couple of days there to catch up with friends.

@abs-oluteM Wow! Bring me with you on your trips too! Hahaha!! Dubai is where you get rich accordingly to Dubai Bling, this reality show on Netflix. LOL!

@mademoiselle @abs-oluteM I want to go to Japan too! It one of my greatest wish to go there with my BFF (I have two and she's the one who doesn't watch dramas). My BFF's health is not the best and before she got sick, we talked about going to Japan. I'm hoping that she will get well enough for us to travel. If one day she is not able to travel, I will go for her, but in the meantime, I can't visit without her. I do plan on visiting Malaysia and Singapore in September 2023 if all goes well. I have to fly into South Korea to get to Malaysia so I might consider a stop there too.

Do you have travel plans any time soon?

I'm back from KL guys! From my failed attempt to see LJW  :letalQQ:

It's been postponed and I hope they can't get him to come again this month or next because then there's litle to no chance of attempting this again. Also, Song Ji Hyo is in Malaysia this weekend and signing stuff at a mall. But I didn't know about it till late/ didn't feel that compelled to extend my trip for it/ she already siigned my Witch's Diner OST :idk:

Still a good trip for me though. Ate lots of food. Bought lots of stationery. Visited all those mega malls  (Damn that new Pavilion 2 is big!!) Lots of flags everywhere for the big election, huh.

Haha! I have no idea what it is about being on a plane, but it just makes me sleepy. It doesn't matter what time I get on the plane too. If my flight is during mid-day when people normally wouldn't sleep, I would still sleep. Hahaha! I can't sleep for a long period of time though. I'll sleep for 30 minutes, wake up look around, and then sleep again. My BFF can sleep for hours at a time on the plane. I have no idea how she does it.

On 11/5/2022 at 3:45 PM, mademoiselle said:

I think being able to sleep again after waking up is more skillful than sleep for hours at a time. The interruption to the sleep is the deal breaker there. I remember there was only once I was able to sleep through the plane ride. I don't know how or why but I literally just slept and sleep again when was woken up by others. Could you friend possibly taken motion sickness pill that makes her drowsy? I do like taking the drowsy ones so I can sleep (my OS: Yes, drug me please!)

Sleeping is good though - at least it's a very calm way to travel! :pandasleep:

I'm scared of plane rides, something that's almost a phobia, but I can talk myself into them and override the panic side. It's ironic, since I love to travel. But yeah, I get very fixated about flying before I fly - I think i started 7 years ago, that year when MAS had the 2 strange incidents (plane disappearing/ plane blown up). I wish I could sleep like your friend on the plane, but the panic side of my brain is like "Wake up, you need to be alert in case of an accident" :nervous:

My post covid trips are all to places I've been before (Malaysia = country I spend 2nd most time in) and Korea I've been to before (ironically for a Ghbili exhibition which kinda looks like the theme park now!) :heiboi: I find one type of trip I tend to do is going somewhere for a specific things/ event / fanmeet/ exhibition/ friend+ family  and that often brings me to countries in Asia that I've already been to :pandathink:  Need to plan an advennture trip to somewhere new soon!

Nagoya is such a beautiful and calm city - my BFF lived there as she moved for work for a few years so I visited her (and that city) just before covid hit! What's in Shirakawago? :pandablush:

I've done most of central Asia almost twice so I'm tempted to go on a tour of all the places I haven't been (and are a bit harder to travel solo) so I can just see them and tick all the boxes. @JenL Not scared of plane ride, just retained the memories of how turbulence made me sick many times. The turbulence always happens after food is served so I threw up a few times. But I eventually figure out travel sickness pill helps. I still don't enjoy plane rides though because I'd still be worried about throwing up and also because the seats are uncomfy for me (be it straight up or recline) and being tied down in a confine space is just not fun.

Shirakawago is one of the World Heritage sites. Villages in the mountains and the houses are like huts. Google it. I wanted to go too but it'll be a long trip to get there so ended up didn't do it. I haven't even gone to Mt. Fuji because people were telling me how it's not always you could see Mt. Fuji. Plus I figure I have seen it in pictures and in the train rides anyway so not so keen on it. Hahaha. I'm more into the food and shopping. I do like Nara though...

Arrrrghhhh off-topic a little... I'm being attacked by daddy long legs! I literally got rid of at least 4 in one week! :lettalKWA::pandaroar:

Ok, back to travelling. When I went to Disneyland / Disney Sea, I was quite amazed that most of the customers are actually Japanese themselves! I'd think after being there a few times the locals would lose interest or get over it* but nope, it seems like a hang out places for the teens. I guess it also helps that they always have events and changes the themes for special festivals like for Easter, New Year and Christmas etc.

*I liked Ballarat's Sovereign Hill at first but after having gone there like 3 times, I'm completely over it. xD

Where have you travel solo apart from TW and M'sia? It's true that some places are best to have accompanies.

I do want to go to Egypt one day. We were supposed to have Tutankhamun's exhibition but Covid got in the way and now they will not be moved out of Cairo anymore! Do you guys actually believe in the curses?

Oh, and because I saw Youth Over Flowers in Africa, I would like to see Victoria Falls too. It's beauuuu-tiful! And I think it'd be a breath-taking moment to see it.

Niagra Falls were very nice too although my memory is fading. Niagra Falls though, have to see it from Toronto's side. I even recognised the particular "view" where X-Men took the shot from the Falls, and I didn't know it was shot there. Hahahahaha!

Europe is also on the travel list except motivation is low because of the long flight. xD I've been to Canada and it didn't feel too different from Australia, except they have this very big Asian supermarket which I think called T&T Supermarket I like going coz they have a lot more varieties than we have here all in one place (more Taiwanese/Japanese junk food).

US - I was in New York for less than a day. Stood at Times Square probably less than 10 mins. The yellow taxi is exactly how we see it in the movies. They are scary drivers. Actually all of them are scary. New York is quite pretty in the sense that I like the architecture and the artistic statues etc on the street. I went after 911 so at the time the securities were still on alert so a lot of police on the street. Spent most of my time at dad's friend's house in New Jersey. I remember going to casinos, one of them was Donald Trump's Taj Mahal.

I also remember I told the oldies I wanted to go to Broadway and they all said NO it's too dangerous! I didn't understand why but later on I think they thought I wanted to go to Brooklyn...? Hahaha I dunno.

Ahhh, this makes more sense. I think most people hate plane rides for the motion sickness. It's quite common that people get very pale and try to sleep. I think my closest friend who is the best person to travel with has really bad travel sickness and just takes Valium to knock herself out. Uncomfy seats = economy? Have you tried the more spacey planes or business class (if you can afford - I cannot/ but also don't personally need or value it)

If you ever eventually choose to do it, the hack is you have to go in Autumn :) It's the easiest season to see the mountain. Winter apparently is ok too, but cold.. It's much harder in Spring and Summer. Lake Kawaguchiko is a good point. The Lake itself has beautiful autumn leaf areas. And you can go to the town and there's souvenir shops etc. It's very cute - all my food was Mt Fuji shaped  .

Yep they're totally into themes and special limited edition merch. Japanese people literally buy the pass to go to the shop to buy limited ediition merch. I first found this out when following a stationery instagram shopper. She seems to make a lot of money off this as she resells her purchases in USD!

As for special ocassions, I was at Disneyland Tokyo for Halloween and that was the best day of Halloween EVER. Literally everyone was in costume but me and they were giving me strange looks  Also all the food was like Halloween themed. It was just so cool.

Oh yes, true. Resell value is so high for those merch because the merch from Japanese are of best quality. Like I just can't with any Disney or manga merch I see outside of Japan because the non-Japanese merch usually look deformed and nothing like the real thing.

I was there for Easter theme and 35th year celebration. Halloween would be SO COOL. That would make going to the Tower of Terror even more fun! I really enjoy Tower of Terror. Second time being at Disney I also figured out that it is best to go for Japanese food inside Disney because all their western food sux. Hahahaha!

Business is too expensive. I cannot justify for it. Maybe premium economy will be good enough.

I've always thought of Dubai as a country you go as a stopover. In Singapore, if you take emirates, you can fly to Europe with just a slightly higher fare. They will transit in Dubai where you can stop for a few days. It's an amazing country considering what they have built in just 20 years. But it is a very man-made city. Relatively expensive too for tourist, although locals think their cost of living is lower than SG.

Hahaha that's luxury only if I travel solo. I've travelled with families and friends that wouldn't let me laze around like that. It's hard to find matching travel partner(s) who can meet your pace. If I cannot find, then I'd just laze at home or travel solo again.

Hahaha. My holiday starts only when I am standing on the ground. Plane ride is not relaxing if it's Economy. LOL. Airplane food from which airlines though? My last trip I purposely picked JAL and they do have lovely food. One trip the food we ate was cooked by amateur chefs, like those who won competitions. It was good idea to use them and they get to practice too. I think by memory, the longer the flight, the better the food or have more varieties.

There are some fame museums you would wanna visit, don't you? Like the Lourve in Paris. Although friends all tells me it is always so jam-packed that I'm not so keen myself coz how can one enjoy the paintings and feel the Feels if there's noises and crowds all over the place?

So the question is what type of traveller are you? Are you a scenic gal? Beach (e.g. Maldives)? Food? Art? If you like relaxing, Cairns is nice - mix it in with snorkeling if you're not into diving. The con is the sea water is very salty so the oxygen's mouth-piece for diving is salty too.

Yes, the travel partner is important. My friend and I are similar - she also doesn't like to rush. But she likes to window shop, even supermarkets 🙄 So I just find a hotel in a central location. She can go walk while I can stay in the room.

This friend of mine went on a Japan trip with a long time ago primary school friend. First time travelling together. All I can say is - they are no longer friends now 🤣🤣🤣

That's true. Singapore Airlines food is one of the best. The worst I think would be those short-haul American or European airlines - they like to give you a bun with a slice of ham with NO butter!

Quantas and British Airways used to be quite good too. But their standard has dropped a lot in recent years do you think? Even the seats are quite bad now - not much cushion?

Yes, I will try to see the main sights that everyone must do. But mainly just to tick it off my list. With the Louvre, I just walk straight to Mona Lisa, stare at it for a minute, then leave 😂 Art is wasted on me.

I just want to relax. It can be in a city or a beach or nature. With a nice hotel I am keen to stay in.

I've been to Cairns. I like these boats trips out to the sea for swimming or snorkelling (never learnt to dive though because I used to be scared of the fishes). The funniest story. Cairns is so laid back, barely anything is open after 6pm. I was there for about a week, every night we sleep before 8pm. My friend, who had dark eye circles ever since I knew her, after a few days, I noticed her eye circles were gone! 🤣 It's better than any eye cream you can buy.

Have you been to all parts of Australia? I've been to a few of the main cities. Sydney is my fave, the only one I don't mind going back a few times.

Niagra Falls were very nice too although my memory is fading. Niagra Falls though, have to see it from Toronto's side. I even recognised the particular "view" where X-Men took the shot from the Falls, and I didn't know it was shot there. Hahahahaha!

I'd love to see all these waterfalls! But definitelly have not seen either one. Why is it better from Toronto side? Is it prettier or just the XMen filming location is cool?

So true! Though I was sad that I didn't get to ride that Nightmare before Christmas ride. I love Jack and Sally, but it turns out the Japanese do too - the wait for the ride was 3 hrs from memory and i just couldn't justify that for like a 5-15 minute ride.

Did you seriously travel all the way to KL just to see LJW?

Yes and No

So I tend to go to KL on the regular anyway since I have people I know and care for there, but since I saw that LJW was coming to KL on a specific date (and it would have definitely happened if not for the Halloween tradgedy), it just seemed like a good way to take advantage of that since it's unlikely that I'll ever run into him in Korea and it was going to be free and you could take photos (For context, Park Eun Bin's fan meet in Singapore was like $200 a ticket and you're not allowed to take photos apparently though I'm sure someone will do the sneaky). And even if LJW had a fan meet in Seoul it would be sold out in seconds...so that was my rationale! But also: I hadn't seen my KL peeps for a long time due to no travel during covid years. Also I had/have an excessive amount of leave (and several types of leave) that I haven't used, so even HR/ work was encourage me to use it :idk:

As for travelling to see a celebrity, this is nothing new or strange compared to all my travelling to Taiwan to see Jasper multple times

:laugh: :laugh::laugh:

I guess as @mademoiselle says travel depends on what you value. For me, I enjoy having some purpose for travel - sometimes it's to go see a celebrity or sometimes it's to go to an exhibition that will never come to my country or sometimes it's to try some pop-up restaurant that is only around for 3 months and then gone forever. I think I like having some exciting experiences   Some people don't care about seeing celebrities in real life and I wouldn't say I care per say or make it my life goal to see everyone I like, but if the opportunity is there and I know can do it and want to do it, I just think 'Why not?' :heiboi: If I'm going to waste all my time watching them in so many shows and talking about them all the time, I guess I may as well see if they are as cool/nice/ pretty in real life to theiir fans as they seem on screen...most of the time there is a surreal kind of magic seeing them in 3D and being candid whhen the camera is not on them....And It makes for a fun travel story!

All of you sound so arty. Travelling to see museums and such. I just laze - leave hotel late morning and return in the afternoon. Then pop out for dinner.

Hahaha I think we just have different travel styles - it sounds like you like the relaxing, do nothing/ leisurely schedule type holiday...that is like my worst nightmare :lettalKWA::laugh: I would get so bored unfortunately. I don't need a lot of sleep, so sleeping in is fine for a few days, but it would really irk me if the person I travelled wiith insisted on sleeping in everyday and wasn't keen on splitting up and meeting later (I've had this happen before where the friend was too scared to split up but was also stubborn in theiir ways.)

Also I guess I'm hardcore. I'll be out the whole day till 9pm. Or in Japan, till 12am

I hope your BFF gets better. Are you visiting Malaysia and Singapore to see friends or just sightsee?

I do want to go to Egypt one day. We were supposed to have Tutankhamun's exhibition but Covid got in the way and now they will not be moved out of Cairo anymore! Do you guys actually believe in the curses?

I do to a certain extent. Not terribly superstitious but if I know it, then it tends to stick in my head and I would feel very conscious about it. Have you heard, if you buy a painting with a face/people, it may contain spirits. In Egypt, they sell a lot of crafts with all sorts of symbols and figurines. I bought a pyramid as souvenir. After I got back to SG, work wasn't go smoothly. I threw away the pyramid after some time. So...

That's an interesting take.

Another funny story. A few years ago Rain came to Singapore. At that time, I had only heard that he is some mega k-pop star. Someone gave me free tickets so I went. It was a short one hour concert. And all he did was prance around the stage and take off his shirt (the girls all went wild). I thought, what's so special about this guy 😂 Recently, I watched Take 1 on Netflix and it featured Rain's 1 song performance at the Blue House. Again he took off his shirt! So it reminded me and now I know how ignorant I was then.

@Chocolate

Hahaha I like supermarkets - I mean, Japan's supermarkets are fun with all the confectionaries, cakes and bento boxes etc. I don't mind going around the seafood/veggie markets too. Maybe you're not interested because you don't cook? These days I'm into home gadgets and kitchen stuff.

Yeah I can relate to your friend. I quietly swore to myself that I'd never travel with this person I went to Japan anymore. She is an undecisive person so I'd to stand (no chair in the shops) and wait for her to decide "Should I buy A or B?". God gives me patience! In the near end of the trip, we went separate ways because she wanted to go somewhere she saw online whereas I want to go another place. She wanted to try all 12 different ramen she read on a blog whereas apart from Ichiran, I hate all the rest of the ramen I've tasted and I want fresh sashimi or sushi because I am in Japan!

Qantas - I have flown an international flight for my first trip to Japan. And yes, the seats were old and the plane was not very well-maintained. Other times using Qantas would be interstate and interstate planes are smaller so not as good. Even SIA flying South East Asian countries (shorter distance), the condition of the planes are not as good as the international. That said, Qantas planes are better compared to Virgin and Jet Star.

Never been on British Airways.

So you are also not interested in Egyptian artifacts? I'm also unsure I'll be able to fully appreciate arts such as paintings. I don't actually find Mona Lisa special. Hahahaha.

Oh...mmm, how long ago were you in Cairns? I'm thinking maybe now it has changed and are not closed this early. I did remember my trip to Launceston (Tasmania) years ago, I was shocked that on a Sunday all the shops were closed, including supermarkets and restaurants! But Australia has come a long way, mainly due to immigrants introducing competitions so now there's more night life. There will be supermarkets that's 24/7 or closes at 10 pm or something. Restaurants in the city would be opened till late etc. But most businesses close at 5pm except Thurs-Fri they open for late night shopping.

So after you threw away the pyramid, did everything get better? You've been to Egypt then???

I wouldn't bother buying paintings (or dolls). Paintings is because I'm not spending money on arts. Dolls is because I've heard enough horror stories about how its hair would grow etc. I especially hate porcelain dolls. LOLLLL.

Wait... why do you now feel ignorant back then??? Is this because now you can appreciate his body? Hahahahahaha!

@JenL

Ah yes I went to that! I can't miss it. It was my first! This one the exhibits weren't all Tutankhamun. There were other artifacts that came with it and Tutankhamun's exhibits were just a small part of it. I really enjoyed this one and fascinated with as old as their civilisation, the details on the artifacts were so intricate and beautiful. You wonder how they can manage it in those times. The one that got cancelled is specifically Tutankhamun only - Treasures of Tutankhamun! Although I doubt the most fame exhibit which is his sarcophagus would come but exhibiting everything else is also good enough for me!

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-11/king-tutankhamun-treasures-are-sydney-bound/9857448

The curses were mainly about "disturbing" their after-life. I think I can understand that. Depending on what our belief is, but regardless, I don't think I'd like it if in the future someone dig up my tomb to "study me". And I have a very cheeky thought because of this :lmao2:. To mislead the future generation, we dressed up as royal and let them think we're some princesses or queens. :lmao2:

Maybe it's just my own imagination but the first Egyptian exhibition, when we reached the sarcophagus of I forgot who, the atmosphere/temperature around it was kind of cold so it feels eerie.

Niagra Falls from Toronto's side has better views and yes, prettier.

New York - because dad doesn't like big cities so he doesn't want to stay overnight or anything at all. Hmph.

Wait, since when there's a nightmare before christmas ride at Disney...??? I don't think I see this when I was there.

Question. Is it mineral sunscreen they are using? Why does it take so long to rub the sunscreen in. In my experience, only mineral sunscreen like zinc oxide gives a white cast

@Tofu Rowoon is finally not awkward with the sunbae and even dare to be cheeky with Sung Dong Il.

I agree. Japan's supermarkets and their packaging is amazing. If I had a nice kitchen, I would probably be like you too even if I didn't cook lol. But alas...

That sounds like a horror trip hahaha.

I was interested at the beginning. But there were just too many things to remember and visiting the museum, the numerous tombs and the Nile Cruise, all in scorching sun, drained me. In the end, I didn't remember anything. That was in 2010, just before the riots so the main museum was still intact.

Yes, things got better after I threw away the pyramid. So who knows.

Haha, no dolls for me too.

Wow, where have you gone already @abs-oluteM??? Travel is like Kdramas for me too! :hearties:

When we started reopening for travel, I flew to Langkawi. I was gonna go somewhere out of the country but all our passports were expired and renewal was a mess at our immigration. So after that when I finally got our pp sorted, I flew to Bangkok ( this is like shopping haven for me) and my family did a trip to Phuket.

I am still deciding between Japan and Dubai - but figured Dubai would be a new experience.

@Chocolate Yes, Dubai is not a usual travel destination and many just transit there. But they do have a lot of fascinating man made stuff. With my kiddo and mum - both need some sort of activity.  For me I need a balance - I can't shop the whole day either or be out the whole day.

@mademoiselle My favorite airline is actually ANA. Another Japanese airline - top notch service and food from ground all the way till you land.

I wholeheartedly agreed! Your travel partner is very important. My mom always ask me why I don't take her traveling with me and I have to remind her that she's so picky about everything -- the activity and especially the food. We took my nephew and little sister (she was in middle school at the time) on a Disney Cruise and my mom refused to eat the food. She was only willing to eat the pizza and hamburger but all the restaurant foods, she refused. It was a very long 10 days with the family and after this day, I was like, "never traveling with mom unless we are visiting family".

@mademoiselle For Egypt, I recommend doing a lot of research before you go or don't (haha!). I've read so much horrid travel stories from people who's gone there especially to Cairo. There are lots of sexual harassment/assault that happens against female travelers. The US has Egypt travels as level 3 which is reconsider traveling there and the second highest in travel advisory (highest is 4 and that's do not travel).

@JenL I would have also bought stationery if I traveled to Asia. They are less expensive and I like that many pens are fine point. In the US, the finest point here is about 0.5 mm and I like it to be finer.

I too think that it won't collapse like that. He didn't pay that much $$$ just to see it go.
Maybe everyone is just in panic mode.

I think he didn't expect his ultimatums to backfire like this. But considering he is building rockets, how difficult can twitter be. Eventually he will find a way. Just when and what will it look like then 😂 The other concern is the US government looking into it.
