I haven't seen ep 1 yet.. so will come back to comment on that later.. I just want to say I'm preparing my heart to be 'broken' from reading some comments above.

AND

I just want to say HELLO @-StrongTower- @im0202!! Haven't seen you around for a while (but I'm also not very active in Dabang myself). Hope you two are well~

Hi @-StrongTower-glad to see you here joining us! How are tou doing? I hope you are well..

Hospital Playlist 2 premiere with a strong start! Rating hit 10% for the first episodes! It became drama of TvN with the highest rating so far! :pandachamp:

Well I'm obviously still have some heart ache left from last night episodes. But I want to point out the cute scene between Seok Min and Seon Bin. She brightly greeted him as 'Oppa' and Song Hwa small smile for realising that both have become a couple. :MewGiggle:

And I might replaying Ik Jun parody scene of men in black and his fight with Jun Wan over cookies for several times until ep 2 airs next week.

:Party01: they finally become a couple! I love this coupling as well..they're just really cute together.

So our Bidulgi couple is still in the safe zone. I mean after the ending of last season, we're wondering whether IkSun truly rejected JunWan's ring..and what would this mean for the future of this couple. It turns out, all is well.. they're still as lovey-dovey as they were before and there doesn't seem to be any 'threat' yet to this couple yayyy. I still strongly suspect that IJ already knew about JWan dating his sister

I 'like' though not like like.... IkSong's awkward scenes. I thought it's so real.. I mean that's what would happen in real life. I was kinda afraid that they would choose to go down the path 'all is well nothing happens in SokCho' (although we could see it was the case when they're mostly with other people around them...but def when it's just the two of them alone). Not sure how this is gonna play out next ep... will they still be awkward when it's just the two of them after SHwa's rejection? I hope that's the case though :PsyWhat:

It's also heart-breaking to watch Yeon U's omma. At first, I also felt slightly annoyed when we found out that she kept coming to visit very often. However, JeongWon's answer opened my eyes too .. that she kept coming to visit because that's where her child's life had been.. and it's really sad to know she had no one else to talk to others about her child because the child basically lived in the hospital.

HP roller coaster has officially started everyone~~ Make sure your seatbelt is on!

Another round for Characters Descriptions rough translations. This time it's Jang Gyeo Ul, Do Jae Hak, Lee Ik Sun and Jo Young Hye (Seok Hyeong's mom). Expect for several posts regarding the characters description updates in the future because the staffs are updating the descriptions step by step.

Note: as these are just a rough trans, there will be many mistakes or incoherent paragraph or sentences because sometimes I translated with literal meaning straight from the dictionary. I apologize in advance.

Note 2: bold and italic descriptions are the newest addition from season 2. The rest are from season 1.

Jang Gyeo Ul (Female/ 3rd year Resident of General Surgery (Graduate from Medical School)/ 29 years old)

Spoiler

She is the only resident in General Surgery, a hospital staff with the highest power.

"These days, is there any difficulty with Jang Gyeo Ul's studies?" this is the biggest issue among the professors. Her cold words, just like her name-sake (winter), and blunt characteristics might hurt others around her unintentionally, but when it comes to care for a patient, she is very passionate. In a department where the resident is a king (or in her case queen), the time has come for Gyeo Ul to choose her specialties and the professors were trying hard to win her affection. Gyeo Ul, who has been playing dumb and consistent with her choice, is making the professors anxious.

She wears white shirts during summer and denim shirts for winter. Those are her two pieces of clothes and she looks as if she only has those outfits only, but to the professors, as the only 'child', she looks the prettiest.

Of course, since she is the only resident in GS, she has lots of work. When she received the call, with body-reflex she comes running and there's no day for her to relax. Thanks to her previous experience as a track and field athlete until she was in junior high school, the first person who comes and meets with the patient is Gyeo Ul. There is a floating rumors about her records 'finished 100m sprint in 13 seconds', she proves it with herself.

From here to there, everyone looks for Gyeo Ul. She must feel so stressful but she can relieve it with food. Even when she has eaten, she can empty the whole box of snacks and she eats 2 cups of ramyeon as an appetizer.

Inside Gyeo Ul's heart where only cold winds blow, a stem of spring has appeared. The lifeless place has become bright in an instant, in emergency room which is like a battlefield, there is a man whose smells like spreading flowers. It is Jeong Won.

By looking at Jeong Won, Gyeo Ul, who acts like a general, smiles secretly. Jeong Won who is famous for being friendly and kind starts to act cold only towards Gyeo Ul and according to advanced information, his dream is to become a priest. She hasn't' started yet but it feels like she has to climb the Himalaya mountain (to get a chance to be with JWon).

Instead of 'Dr Jang Gyeo Ul', she wished for him to call her just once as 'Gyeo Ul –ah'.
Jung Won's way to call her made her heart aches.

She couldn't hold it back anymore, so in the end she finally spoke up.

"I like you very much.. It's alright even if it's not for me, but please stay in the hospital."

The unexpected answer from Jeong Won, gave an unforgettable Christmas present to Gyeo Ul.

Do Jae Hak (Male/Cardio-thoracic Surgery Chief Resident (Graduate from Graduate School of Medicine)/ 39 years old)

Spoiler

He is just one year younger from Jun Wan, a very late bloomer resident.

Coming from a family with nothing special and born with a look that doesn't stand out among others, Jae Hak lives while thinking that 'a signboard' was the thing that could help him shines in this world.

He went to a law school to have a title with 'sa' words, that's why from the first year of college he has been hanging on the bar exam. It's not until his sixth bar exam and got hit hard in the back of his head that make him finally realized.
Instead of a lawyer (byeonho'sa') or a judge (pan'sa'), there is a doctor (eui'sa').

In the end, in the age when others are building up their career at work, he entered a medical graduate school!

When he puts on a white gown, he would think it will give him 'a name' that everyone looks up to. Preparing for a surgery, taking care of the patient while also preparing for a specialist exam...
Even if he has 10 bodies, it's not enough.

Nevertheless, when it's time to sleep he sleeps, when it's time to eat he eats and when he feels hungry, he will hide and eat. Because he is so devoted to his instincts and desires, he got a nickname 'instinct'.

Every time he makes a mistake, being hit by Jun Wan's murderous glaze is something that familiar to him now.  If Jae Hak is another resident, maybe he would have already poured out a mouthful of swear words but maybe because he is his junior with only one year difference in age, Jun Wan forcibly swallows his anger and Jae Hak somehow feels glad to see that.

While also feeling sorry and shame at the same time.

And then, there came a moment where Jae Hak understood Jun Wan's scolding and harshness.

At the same time, in the operating room which scared him Jae Hak eyes started to shine, and his desire to understand the patient slowly got bigger.

Being a cardiothoracic surgeon... He thinks it was the best choice of his life.

Lee Ik Sun (Female/ Ik Jun's younger sister, an Army Major/ 38 years old)

Spoiler

If Ik Jun is the 'soul' then Ik Sun is the 'mate', the brother and sister who resembles each other and proud of their chemistry.

As an Army Commander, she is serving in the front line unit in Inje, Gangwon-do. In the troops, she is called as 'viper' and famous as a tenacious commander, but when she was young she got a big surgery for biliary atresia and has a frequent back pain. Maybe that's why at home she is still a cute daughter to her parents and to Ik Jun, she is the little sister he needs to take care of.

Since she was young, she prefers salted fish over ham and likes chili paste (gochujang) than ketchup. Ik Sun has an adult taste. Until now she enjoys sashimi, beef intestines, Pyong Yang cold noodles and blood sausage soup. Her favorite food is spicy mandarin fish stew.

Because her body is tied to the troops, her visit to delicious restaurants can only be done through surfing the internet.

Because the pain from her previous break up, to Ik Sun dating is a series of process. 'People will change, Love will fade away and relationship will end.'

She thought it was useless to trust and to fall in love with someone again, but Jun Wan

s deep and warm love melted Ik Sun's frozen heart.

And... a crisis that came to their dating life which was on flowery path.

Can she expect a different result this time?

Jo Young Hye (Female/ Seok Hyeong’s Mother/ 64 years old)

Spoiler

Seok Hyeong’s Mom.

She is an elegant Madam who seems to never have any hardships in her life, but her daughter’s passing, her husband’s affair and because of the shock, she has a cerebral hemorrhage.

The tough waves of live have constantly hit Young Hye.
Her only hope in this never-ending path of suffering is her son, Seok Hyeong. 'While I’m still alive, I never want to see Seok Hyeong gets hurt', but... She always feels sorry for being weak.

Thanks to Chairman Yang who was selfish until the end of his life, Young Hye has become a little bit relaxed.
Now, the remaining homework that she has left is to make Seok Hyeong happy

The 1st episode of S2 was lovely - it is that feeling you get when you go to  your favourite restaurant ( oh gosh I miss eating out) and indulging in some comfort food. It felt good to see familiar faces and was happy to see the same relationship dynamics between the 5, and also between the professors and their residents. I realised how much I miss them being childish and fighting over food and who sits in the middle of the back seat . LOL!

I think what made a great impact on me was the story of the two mothers. One fighting for  her baby to stay alive inside her,  and the other struggling to keep the memories of her dead baby with her. I don't think you need to be a mum or a parent to empathise with them. In the case of the first mother for example , the one who's water bag broke too early , having the right doctor sure changed things especially when you see how Min A's patient chart had two contrasting reports. Medically speaking both professors would have arrived at the same prognosis, but a difference in perspective has given this baby a shot at survival . What Seok Hyung saw was a mother's love and a baby's will to live- that was the critical difference . I can understand now why Min A admires SH as much as she does .

On the subject of Min A - gosh I did feel rather bad that she got turned down  but perhaps this isn't such bad thing at this point. I have a feeling that there are still some unresolved feelings between SH and the ex wife - and part of me wonders if perhaps SH is just really one of those men who is just happy to be alone. I know a few IRL who just find being in a relationship such a bother.  Kudos to Min A though, I admire her courage and how she did not wallow in that "rejection" . I always like how upfront she is and so I liked her questions to him - this girl is just dead honest isn't she? I am still rooting for Gom Gom but more than that I am rooting for her to be a great gynae , and clearly under SH's guidance she is fast becoming one.

Of course , I was very happy with all the WG scenes and I will spare non-shippers here of my excitement. But the one thing I loved very much was the advice that JW gave Gyeol regarding what to do with Yeon U's mother. Yeon U's mother was trying hard to keep the memory of her baby alive and I teared up for her because coming to YulJe was all she could do to remember him. I liked how this story also weaved in Gyeol's development arc - she has always been good at her job but she is aware that she may be lacking in the way she communicates with the patients. So having her ask the mother for coffee was surprising, but this is a nice tribute to the positive input that JW has had on her.

Finally , IkSong - I cannot say that I was surprised she would reject him . It was clear that she had chosen to go to Sokcho at the end of S1 because she was emotionally tired - she's had a tough year and was overworked and seemed like she had wanted some "me" time. Ik Jun's confession came to her as a surprise and it seems to me her "no" to him now was because she still needs to "rest"  - don't know if that makes sense. Also the older you get sometimes you may be reluctant to rock the boat - there's a lot at risk for such long time friends to cross  the line. All I can say is this will be a long season for these two.

I just finished ep. 1 :)

I adore Min A courage to ask questions that doubtttt her! Like @abs-oluteMsaid she is dead honest ahahahah.

About point on mother that wants to keep the baby and to keep the memory of the baby dynamic.. This is why I love each episode of HP. It seems the lacking 5 is not lacking at all really, they are sooo shiny, reliable doctor (it is hard to be isnt), also fun as friends. Like.. They have great life & blessing. Its unfair to average humans out there lol. But, still, they are human. And we can learn much from their pov experience, about human story in hospital :) that full of livings and deaths..

Wintergarden is an example of healthy relationship please! The development of Gyeoul that aware of her may lacking of emotional bond towards patient is beautiful. When she asked how to do to her very bf, that hot ahjusshi 40s angry of shampoo stealing lol, is loveeeee. We can learn from our partner, sure!

IkSong, I'm not surprised. Songhwa's choice makes sense to me. It also revolves around the 5, so just lets see the boat of their individual beings :) it will be a long way for Ikjun, Songhwa

SO YEAY HOSPITAL PLAYLIST 2 IS REALLY HERE!! :wow:

Finally watched episode 1, and it's definitely a roller coaster.

Yeon Woo's mother made me tear up a bit in sympathetic pain. So, in Korean, the staff kept calling her "Yeon Woo's mother" when they address her or talk about her. This is the custom for Koreans that a woman is called the mother of their firstborn child and the man is called the father of their firstborn child when they have children. A couple will even call each other that. So, I kind of got the feelng that YW's mom liked being called that because it keeps her child alive for her. Others, including family, would no longer address her as YW's mother. It was lovely that JWon was the one to convey that to GW. I can understand the suspicions of the hospital staff, especially in these litigious times when people look to assign blame, but sometimes it's really about being human with each other.

I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of MH in Season 1, but I liked her in this first episode. She's still learning. Her point that it was the same patient in the same condition with the chart notes written by the same resident, it was only the doctor-in-charge who had changed, but the outlook and the treatment plan were completely different, as was the tone of the chart notes themselves. Her appreciation for SHyeong as a doctor continues to grow, and despite her dejection at his rejection, she's still learning diligently from him.

Even if I'm still bitter that we're not going to see Ahn Chi Hong at all this season, I'm glad that they at least mentioned him. Maybe they can bring him back for a cameo at least in a later episode?

I'm not entirely sure I liked the song that the band played for this episode though. I guess it kind of fits for SHyeong and IJ though.

As for the various couples... It's fun to watch Wintergarden and the Dove Couple being all cutesy and lovey-dovey. The enthusiastic backhug was definitely sweet. And, I'm rather glad that the returned ring issue was settled quickly.

IkSong happened the way I thought it would happen, but I still felt bad for IJ, though I think he already kind of knew from how awkward SHwa was when it was just the 2 of them. Still, it was well done, and pretty realistically handled. Though, I still hope tthat IkSong happens.

SHyeong and MH was harder to read, mostly because SHyeong seems so set on being a bachelor and mama's boy. I don't think SHyeong is particularly interested in his ex-wife, but feels an obligation to her. And, MH's straightforward approach seems as if it would be a good match for SHyeong's personality and tendencies.

I like this comparison. Although I can't quite put how I felt when I watched the first episode. It's like so surreal .. and it felt so good... I wonder about others here.. how would you liken your feeling to when you watched the first episode of second season??

Hmm @abs-oluteM actually I wouldn't mind if SHyeong ends up being a bachelor. As you said, he actually is pretty content living on his own, and it just shows that people don't have to end up with anyone romantically to be happy :idk:

I forgot to mention... I like how they handled the change in Uju. I was wondering about how they would handle this (since the child actor's growth would be so noticeable and yet the first eps still started in the year 2019?? the other adult actors won't have a problem with looking the same unlike Uju... @LaLa how shoudl we pronounce UJu again?? Woo Joo? Woo Ju? U Ju?). I chuckled when they just tackled the child actor's growth so 'tacky' like that... "Wow...did you notice how Uju has grown so much?" IJ said :P

Now waiting till next Thursday like :heiboi:

@stroppyse @SnowBlob I really admire JJS's acting at the part where he got rejected . He was trying not to show that he was hurt since she was talking in the third person. But gosh it felt like a stab on my heart and I am not even a hardcore IkSong shipper.'

As to Ahn Chi Hong , I loved this character a lot in S1 , and as I had said a few pages before they did his character dirty at the end. But moving on, I am glad they mentioned him but I read on twitter that his agency said that he will not be greeting the viewers in S2.

I didn't have a chance to mention Bidulgi / Dove couple earlier and I am glad that their relationship seem rather stable. It is not easy doing long distance but then again this isn't going to be forever, so when she is done with her training she can come back. Maybe wedding bells for them? The million dollar question is does Ik Jun know????  Knowing how cheeky Ik Jun can be and we know he's always aware of everything , it can't be he doesn't know. Also nice to see that Jun Wan is still giving all his residents an earful for not studying or focusing more . LOL!

I was under the impression there would be time jump because in some pre-released articles on Naver that was what they said. But it looks like we're picking up from the end of S1. Perhaps, we might see a time jump later.

That is true since any good plot needs conflict but I guess they needed to balance the amount of angst they are going to put the audience through.

No, IJ does not know. At least I don't think so. JWon mentions that JWan is in a long distance relationship with someone living in London. IJ says that JWan should ask his girlfriend if she knows Ik Soon, and that given how sociable IS is, that she is sure to know his JWan's gf. JWan was sweating bullets, but managed to just respond that he'll mention it to his gf. LOL

IJ is such an open person, I'm not sure that he would have kept it hidden if he knew that his baby sister was dating JWan. Then again, perhaps IJ would if he approved of them dating, but wanted to torture JWan?

they kept it for 12 episode only even for season 2....  thats the only complain... they should have totally increased the number of episodes...

Then again, each episode is really long, though given that it's only 1 episode a week as well, it's going to be a short season. Wonder if they are thinking of doing a Season 3, and whether everyone would be available to do a Season 3. If they are planning a Season 3, the story arcs would look very different than if they had to "finish" the stories in Season 2.

I'm actually pretty glad that not all the couples are in conflict all of the time. That's not realistic either. The Dove Couple gave us moments of sweetness and flirtation in Season 1 while the Wintergarden Couple was developing. And, now with IJ, SHwa, and SHyeong in romantic uncertainty, I'm going to rely on the Dove Couple and the Wintergarden Couple to provide some sweetness to balance the angst.

Btw, I appreciated how GW pretties herself up to meet JWon, and then begs the rain to stop as she's waiting for him since she had even blown dried her hair. lol

It seems almost always the case that a man who is an extrovert gives the impression that because he is friendly with everyone, treats everyone the same way that he is content within himself, needs no one and is interested in no one. And I stress "gives the impression". ;) Plus Ik-jun comes with a son. Whereas Seok-hyeong comes across as someone who is pathetic and needy -- requiring some TLC. Some women respond to that. That said, he's also very caring and gentle with his patients. Plus he's something of an enigma. The more he retreats into this shell, the more attractive he seems.

There is a short possibly two week time jump from Christmas to when we see Gyeo-ul's very busy day at work.

It's a good analogy and to me the transition is perfectly seamless. It's as if we never left the building at all.

As you and I have talked about this, it's a relief that Episode 1 is as good as it is. Everything that is good about the drama in the first season was showcased with the same degree of confidence we've come to expect from the Shin-Lee combo.

The highlight of the episode was watching Gyeo-ul's interactions with Yeon-u's mother -- not just because it was a poignant and realistic examination of grief but after my rewatch and at someone's prompting, I realise how much Gyeo-ul has grown since she nervously confessed to Jeong-won. Being with Jeong-won has been so good for her growth not just as a clinician but also as a person. The confidence is so pleasing to watch especially for the fact that I have been rooting for her since Episode 2 of last season. For the first time in her journey as a doctor she has someone who takes the trouble to help her and motivate her to do better. Love is good for both of them. It makes them both stronger -- it literally puts a spring in Jeong-won's step and it pushes Gyeo-ul's already stretched capacity further. The way they feature her busy is very instructive. I think it is telling that in this first episode we see Jeong-won having dinner with Gyeo-ul and talking about the hardest part of being a clinician in contrast to what we saw in the first episode of the first season where he's having chicken and beer with his oldest brother and crying about patients he had lost or helped. The contrast serves as a reminder that his entire outlook on the job has changed. He is now giving the benefit of his experience/observations to some else coming through the ranks, showing I believe his acceptance that the emotional challenge of being in this business is par for the course. Rather than running away from the pain of losing patients and watching their loved ones grief, embrace it as part of the job.

@40somethingahjumma  I like your new profile pic. Yes , I really should have more confidence in the Shin-Lee duo. I think that the WG date  that we got to see was perfect as it wasn't just purely for fan service. They used it to show their character developments as well - there really are no wasted scenes in this drama

Just wanted to share my thoughts and joy with HP2 and I can totally relate to a tweet that says HP is the cure for all ailments, physical or mental.  My endorphins are at an all-time high, career stresses are put on the side (as fangirl-ing over HP and WG couple is so much fun).  I'll organized it using their couple names (just coz its fun that way): :)

GomGom Couple

I think MH is really good fit with SHyeong's personality, as she is bright, fun, extrovert, conversation starter and doesn't take things too seriously.  SHyeong seems like a wounded bird, hence MH's way of being honest and open to him is a good trait of a friend (or maybe more), this is evident as our Bear doctor is starting to opened up to her.  Though for them to work out as more than friends, it lies with SHyeong.  As mentioned by @40somethingahjumma, it could also be that SHyeong is fine being alone in love (as not all that are single are lonely).  Though I think SHwa fits that bill more than SHyeong, being contented on the status of her life (different facets of it) and not actively looking for someone to date or marry.  SHyeong, he seems to fit the bill of someone who is alone and lonely, that person who has some inner stuff and baggages that he needs to untie and face, before anything or anyone else comes in to change the status quo.

IKSONG Couple

I've said this on another forum, from the angle of IJ and as drama-viewer I can (and want) to see them working out as a couple.  From a real-life angle or even from SHwa's lens, it is hard to cross that friends to lovers bridge.  This is beyond the usual take a risk and reap the benefit.  It's even more complicated coz I really feel that SHwa did have feelings for IJ in their 1st few years of friendship, unrequited love on your best bud.  And how do you usually get over that?  Well for one, telling yourself everyday that IJ is a friend nothing more, schooling your features to not give anything away and diversion to other things or people.  A habit can be form in 21 days, what can we expect to happened if for years you've taught yourself that he is friend, only a friend (motto or even a mantra). That would be cemented in your mind.  How do you then just remove that mantra that has kept you for 20 years, when possibly the way that she was able to survive what she thought an unrequited love is to hold on that long to it?

Wintergarden Couple

My favorite and always will be!!!!!!!!!  I'm just happy that we've got ahealthy, balance and mature relationship from WG.  It's a relationship that helps their individual growth and anchors them.  As for some comments on other platforms stating that their progression seems fast, I don't think so.  Breaking it down, JW is the type to agonise (in his head) for a long time over two course of action, then his heart weirdly will accept a decision, but he doesn't act swiftly, but subconsciously his showing signs of going in one direction, but he doesn't overtly say it.  Just like his chaebol status. Personally, I think he knew he feels something different about JG as early as episode 2 (strong emotions as he said not his cup of tea) or episode 3 (yukjeon episode).  And that is months of contemplation, which he did not share with anyone nor was it overtly obvious.  But somehow, I think when he was already speaking to her (in his head at least) in jondaemal, he already lean towards JG.  Hence, him being comfortable with JG makes sense, coz he has already gone through the stages in his head.  As for JG, her character has always been consistent, she doesn't really put covers or masks on, she is true to her core.  And it's nice that both IK and JW are helping her to polish the rough edges (and not changing her altogether), just providing perspectives and letting her be.  In dramas, sometimes they do have the tendency to make an extremely logical person become an extremely feeling one, just coz a feeling person is the nicer one.

Admittedly, Bidulgi Couple is my least favorite one as of yet.  I don't know if it's my drama lens view that amongst the girls, Iksun is the one that seems so far to the rest of the casts, hence my investment in them is not as strong.
